Cell phones are CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. A lot of the time companies will PAY you to take the phone if you sign up for a plan. I got a Siemens SL56 for free + $100 back when I signed up for a year of service.

As for "making them more complicated", that's bull. Besides the PDA/Phone/Game Console hybrids, every cell phone I've seen has been insanely easy to call from. Press numbers, press "call". Wau! And if you don't want all those features, then (intuitively enough) don't BUY a phone with them! I didn't need a camera or bluetooth or anything, so I didn't buy a phone that had those features. There are PLENTY of them out there.

  14. Re:ps2 success on PS3 Release Not Until 2006, PSX Firmware Upgrade? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Part of the reason for the success of the PS2 was DUE to the fact that it got out well before the competition. Between everyone wanting to get a "next-generation" console and software developers wanting to get in on the action early, the time advantage was hugely beneficial.

Competition-beating products aren't necessarily the ones that are the most technically complex. Look at the Xbox VS the PS2. The XBox is completely superior when it comes to hardware, but that still didn't save it from getting crushed by the PS2.

That time advantage is just what the other companies need to overtake Sony, and I'm sure they'll both be rushing to get their products out as soon as possible to take advantage of it.

So just wait until you find a good deal. I thought it was like that until I actually started looking at deals every day.

Amazon, every once in a while (and they are currently), offers free memory cards with the purchase of a digital camera (or a discount on an even bigger memory card). Walmart has a bundle for the Pentax Optio S camera where you get a tripod, camera case, and 128MB memory card for around $25 extra. I've seen Newegg do the "free memory card" thing as well.

Patience pays off. Just wait a bit and usually a deal will pop up.

Comparing cross-platform games is only good for comparing the game itself, not comparing the consoles. SSX3, for instance, looks excellent on an XBox, but the PS2 controls suit it a lot better, but that doesn't tell me which is the better console.

The games define a console, not the technical specs (which would you rather have, a NES or a CDi?), and some of the best games I've played are only available on certain consoles. Each console has its awesome games (Disgaea, KOTOR, Zelda: TWW). There is really no "best" console, just the best console for you depending on what you want to play.

  20. Re:go to Food Lion on Stores Use Discount Cards To Notify Of Recall · · Score: 1

They're not owned by the same company, and they're not "on the same discount card network", it's just that when they scan a discount card, the only thing that gets scanned in is a little barcode. They don't do any error checking on that number, so if the number scanned in doesn't exist in the database, they'll just make a new record for it.

The database with your personal information is centralized, and seperate from the database that your scanned purchases are recorded in (each store has their own). This is why if you're cashing a check, it takes some time to authorize it, but if you're just scanning in the card for purchases, it's instant. If you need the personal information, it will be looked up by that little barcode's number.

So since they don't have the complete list of all customers at each store, this means (at least at the place that I worked) is that you can use ANY barcode and it'll just assume you've never shopped there before. More than a few times I'd accidentally scan a gallon of milk or a bag of chips as the card, and it worked fine.

So, if you scan the discount card from another store, it'll still give you the savings since it's a valid barcode, but they have no way of tracking that back to you unless they can somehow find out that you used that card, then get that information from their competition.

(Note: companies owned by the same corporation may share data, I know Jewel and Albertson's does)

    2) It pushes the numbers of people using Windows up, which is what a lot of PHBs look at. "Why would we switch over to Linux when 99% of the world uses Windows?!"

    3) Tax write-off.

    4) Looks good to consumers - "Wow, they're so generous!"

    5) Maybe MS just felt like being nice. There's no exclusivity agreement, so even if the people there take the free software, there's nothing stopping them from using alternative software if they feel like it. Pretty cool of MS.
