  1. And all the masses nod their heads with a sad show of sagacity... burping quietly in front of their tellies... and watching the penguin explode.

  2. Politician Engineers on New Toronto Declaration Calls On Algorithms To Respect Human Rights · · Score: 1

"... released a new declaration on machine learning standards..." Because, (1) declarations are easier to write than standards themselves; (2) they can now move on to the standards which will be a lot easier than their implementation. I've not been able to track it down, but, are these guys all politicians? (I apologize to all my Canadian brothers, for having recommending the suggestion to our own politicians that they ought to spread abroad. Either someone listened (God forfend) or the politicians all came from abroad. There must be a tertium quid.)

  3. What, Where, When, Who, How on AI Can't Reason Why (wsj.com) · · Score: 1

Questions of causation have been a challenge for humans for, like, forever. Aristotle helpfully gave us four causal categories. (Of course, more than 99% of intellectuals won't be able to list them.) It should be no surprise to us when there are so many examples of confused cause and effect that are espoused every moment of every day. Just watch politicians! Of course, this fellow isn't even coming close to our most common use of the question why: what is our motivation? Goodness, we often don't know our own motivation for the things we do, let alone the motivation of others! You see, the questions what, where, when, who, and how are really pretty easy questions. The why questions address intention. Show me a pile of intentions laying on the ground and I'll withdraw my assertions that intentions are nearly impossible to fully grasp. If an AI has trouble with causation, imagine the trouble it will have with intention. Well, sorry for wandering off topic a bit. I'm an old man. I wander a lot.

  7. Stop food subsidies and I bet they will get better results in that kind of study. Nutrition is expensive, taste sells, therefore, tasty non-nutritious foods are the logical result to maximize profits. Just like any machine, if you provide it superior fuel, it will operate at a higher rate of performance. Of course the other bunch of lobbyists that will get all bothered are the medical industry. As a society were all about allopathic medicine -- not improved health. Well, I better shut up now. :-)

  8. Waiting for Complete Safety on Tesla Rejected More Advanced Driver Monitoring Features On Its Cars, Says Report (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

As soon as human driving becomes completely and entirely safe, then I will settle for self-driving cars to simply be more safe than humans.

  9. Panicking without Taking Responsibility on Plastic Bag Found at the Bottom of World's Deepest Ocean Trench (nationalgeographic.com) · · Score: 1

When I was young lad, as a part of Tikkun Olam, when we would stop alongside the road or after leaving a camping site, our parents required us to police the area in order to remove (1) all evidence of our having been there; and (2) a majority of evidence by the occupation of others. Even today I police my yard, street, local parks, etc. -- even as an old man. Given that ecology minded folks seem to think that the problem is with a government, corporation, or anyone else; I should not be surprised if we find cigarette butts and bear cans on Pluto. Furthermore, my wife and I are foodies. We produce 1/4 the amount of trash that our neighbors (with the same number of people in the home) do. Personal responsibility will clean a world -- not bigger government or increased tax dollars. I begin to wonder if common sense has become a modern superpower.

  10. I'm not sure why these guys are newsworthy. I mean I don't read horoscopes or that kind of stuff. However, I was a Physics/Astronomy major many decades ago. I have pointed out to people through the years that the heliocentric perspective is really not a TRUE perspective, but rather a mathematical convenience. Indeed, we could have a Pflugerville-Texas-centric perspective if we wanted. The math would be a nightmare, but it is doable! :-)

  12. Anyone who has worked around liquid gasses knows that something like Nitrogen can displace all the Oxygen and CO2 in an enclosed place. It kills painlessly, and quickly. No sensation at all. This is a good idea. I wish I'd thought of it!

  13. Well, I have to admit whenever I go into a bank it is generally pretty boring. Presumably the AI wouldn't have to be very "intelligent." But maybe I'm just being snarky.

  18. When I see young people driving around with their car stereos at high volume, I wonder that they are not satisfied with their own thoughts. Perhaps that is the major problem. The word amusement -- our culture's summum bonum -- has at its roots the stopping of thought. I believe it was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, "I have never found the companion more companionable than solitude."
