From what I've heard (grain of salt) it isn't so much a technical issue but a licensing issue. Nintendo made a calculated judgement to release it without DVD playback because the market is sufficiently saturated at this point. I've wondered if a company like Cyberlink would ever bring a DVD program like PowerDVD out to the Wii store. I suppose it might be too niche at this point though.

I know what you are saying about Apple in that the corporate focus shifted from Apple II to Mac development in the early 80's. I get that because it was a great system (one I still like to tinker with).

However Apple didn't abandon you, you abandoned Apple (for better or worse). They stopped making the Apple II in 1993! I can think of no other home computer that has had that kind of product lifespan. 16 years of sales and support is a ridiculous amount in this industry where products are dumped after every couple years.

Most mines produce much more than you'd think. My father is an electrics foreman for what was the Phelps Dodge mining company. While visiting him in Arizona at their big copper mine he told me about how the mining companies routinely find large pockets of other precious minerals (like gold, silver, etc.) in mines. Everything they pull out of the ground they have to pay taxes for. So what they do is wait for prices to raise before pulling out mineral pockets they find. They basically mark the pockets and rebury them to retrieve later.
