Between the stupid looking characters/weapons and the poor use of color, I'm not sure how interesting this game seems now. I'm sure some people will eat it up anyway, unfortunately.

If you go in knowing what you're getting, it is a very enjoyable book (assuming Silmarillion is your thing - if it's not, don't read Hurin). Slamming Hurin because it's not as accessible as LOTR is a waste of editorial space. Given that it is essentially an extension of or fleshing out of a portion of Silmarillion and other similar books, I think it's quite good and enjoyable in the same fashion, and I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of its progenitors.

  18. Educaction on YouTube Breeding Harmful Scientific Misinformation · · Score: 1

This is a matter of education. I think a large section of the population think vaccinations are unnecessary in this day and age, and have no inkling of what would befall us if vaccinations stopped. Even now, the majority of the population needs to be vaccinated for things that rarely appear, or they will resurface in force. This fact is either unknown to many Americans, or is disputed outright due to ignorance and lack of education on the subject. We need to address the problem at its root, by teaching people about the subject, at least minimally.

It wouldn't hurt, however, for pharmaceutical companies to stop using questionable ingredients in their vaccines. Just the other day my daughter was denied a flu vaccination at the drugstore because their brand of vaccine contained mercury or something crazy like that. She had to go to her pediatrician where they have vaccines for kids. Perhaps there is some really good reason why they need to put mercury in vaccines, but aside from some financial reason, I can't see what that might be. My daughter was able to get a vaccine that had nothing "bad" in it, so it's obviously not strictly necessary. Crazy stuff like this only adds fuel to the ignorance, doubt and distrust surrounding the growing trend of people not getting vaccinated.

On an aside, my young daughter cried when she couldn't get her vaccination at first. She loves getting shots. I had to laugh, because she's probably the only kid in the world to get that broken up about not getting a shot (they had to forcefully pin me down to get shots when I was her age). But at the same time, it made me a little verklempt that she really gets it, even at her young age. Why can't so many grown adults understand?

    its not like that

But it *is* like that. Maybe there's some simple way to just sign up for everything at once that I'm just missing, but your comment doesn't shed any light. I'm not saying any of this should be for free, not sure why you think that's my point. It's just goofy that you can sign up for call out-only, and that if you want people to call in you have to get a phone number, which is a separate and additional charge. And if you want voicemail, etc., you can sign up for that too if you want, but you have to have a phone number (obviously). You can also get forwarding (separately) and transfer capability (separately). There are other crazy things like "Skype To Go" and "Skype Pro", the benefits of which won't be obvious to your average Joe-just-wants-to-make-a-call. And as far as I can tell, you can only pay for calls with "Skype Credit", which isn't credit at all, but rather a prepaid bucket of money to make future calls with (while, confusingly, other features are billed monthly).

Don't get me wrong, I like Skype and use it myself. I even used it to make phone calls from my laptop while in the Antarctic, where there are very few options. But if they want non-geeks to use it, they need to at least give simpler options to buy plans, like other phone companies do.

And the voice network ain't so great sometimes either. I suppose their voice service probably isn't any worse than other providers, but it is laughable to think that somehow iPhone software is going to screw things up. What, would it delay my SMS traffic? My voicemail notifications too? Cause my phone not to ring when people call me? Cause my calls to constantly drop even when stationary? Cross my calls with the calls of other people? Make call quality fluctuate, often to the point where communication is impossible?

Funny, that's already the way it is.

  25. Need to change business model on EBay Admits To Bad Call On Skype · · Score: 1

I love skype, but signing up for its pay services is more complicated than it needs to be. At one point I considered dumping my VOIP phone and using skype for calls and voicemail, but it turned out to be more hassle than just keeping my VOIP phone. The problem is that call-out capability, call-in capability, voicemail, etc., are all essentially different products with different terms, cost and billing. While I appreciate the flexibility such an a la carte approach offers, I did find it somewhat of a hassle and kind of confusing. Why not have a single plan you pay for all at once? Also, prepaying for calls is a little weird - not sure if they give the option of monthly billing for calls like every other phone-type company, but they should.

If they streamlined and simplified things, they might be able to get more business, perhaps even by the average joe.
