It's important to keep in mind, though, that the lines for behavior that will get you arrested and behavior that will get you sued, fired, shunned, and/or asked to leave and not come back aren't and shouldn't be the same.

Does that mean they can never make a series that shows how they got from humanity of today to that optimistic future? I'm sure it could be an interesting story.

  8. Yes, it's useful science. It identifies nicotine as the cause and shows that the flavorings and solvents did not cause it. Is nicotine the obvious choice for the culprit? Sure. That doesn't mean we should say we're done and ignore the possibility that the other ingredients are a factor as well.

The user experience matters too. If something is so annoying to use that you simply don't, you've wasted your money. If using it is bearable but takes twice as long to get things done with it, consider how much your time and frustration over the course of a year are worth.

There are certainly things not to like about Apple products, but generally, the user experience is not among them.

  19. Not only that, but recent research points to a person's gut flora having a huge influence on obesity and dietary habits. The whole subject of nutrition and diet is a lot more complex that we imagined.

  20. I really think you're looking at this the wrong way. It's not that these people think diet soda is a magical drink that wipes away all their caloric transgressions. They know they're eating fattening stuff but don't see the need to pour a liter of fizzy sugar water down their throats on top of it. Just because they're not making the best health decisions, it doesn't mean they're drooling morons.

  21. To produce three avocados, you need 264 gallons of water = 1m^3 = 1000 liters. That is more water than consumed by a child in one year.
