I believe the "expensive tech" is meant generally to all UNIXes and maybe more specific to FreeBSD than the proprietary ones.

But I don't get it why people don't get it as to why this is such a horrendous faux pax. Let me try to make an over-the-top comparison:

    • 1935 Olympics. Germany. Aryan Supremacy:
      • "Germany skillfully promoted the Olympics with colorful posters and magazine spreads. Athletic imagery drew a link between Nazi Germany and ancient Greece. These portrayals symbolized the Nazi racial myth that superior German civilization was the rightful heir of an "Aryan" culture of classical antiquity. The Nazis reduced their vision of classical antiquity to ideal "Aryan" racial types: heroic, blue-eyed blonds with finely-chiseled features."
Jesse Owens - a black man wins 4 gold medals. Big PR failure. Why, though? Because a black man won? NO. Because of the PR build up and public pratfall proving the lie.

Here's why this is a story: the whole PR (note, Public Relations) campaign is about how UNIX paints you into a closed corner, is proprietary, requires expen$ive technicians to run and maintain, etc. But the Freakin' PR firm's website is UNIX! If there is a less-clueful group than PR people when it comes to computers, who is it?

Since the whole campaign is predicated on GETTING OUT of Unix...the fact that the "way out" of UNIX is hosted on a Unix computer is ... damn funny.

Shoots the whole campaign down the drain, which would explain the rapid spin control to change the server/headers in the past days.

P.S. Someone needs to get on irc://irc.slashnet.org#slashdot and let polaris know about this story. He'll be so surprised!

  10. Moz on OS X on Mozilla Tree Closes for 1.0 · · Score: 1
Being a recent convert to Mac OS X I had to decide which browser to use on a daily basis. I had come from a dual-booting Windows/Linux environment and was used to IE, Mozilla and KDE. I used Moz on Linux but felt it was sluggish (up to .9.8) and oft times used KDE to (1) load a site quickly, if not totally accurately, (2) to get around browse detection crap.

At first I thought it would be IE for OS X. Until I realized it was "5.1" and could not function properly as a simple FTP site browser (what's up with passive mode on IE, anyway?). After playing with different FTP plugins, gave up and downloaded Mozilla 0.9.9 for OS X. No problems as a simple FTP client. Cool.

But I began using Mozilla more and more because it was useful and more comfortable than IE (or iCab, et al; I went through three other browsers on the Mac but wasn't impressed). Tabs, ChatZilla (which is getting better), and, did I mention tabs? Yes, I used these features on Linux, but on the Mac it's quick and responsive.

If you use OS X, you should give Mozilla a try - it's a better browser.

  14. My feedback to apple on Apple Wants Your Input · · Score: 2
Here's what I submitted to Apple:
    • I'm a web application developer (the whole pipeline, from MySQL (etc.) , mod_perl, perl CGI, PHP, Apache on a Unix/Linux server to HTML, XML, XSLT, JavaScript on the client) and have been using Linux/KDE and Win4Lin (to test clients using Windows and IE 5/5.5/6) on my Intel based laptop for all my development needs. After reading about OS X and knowing a little bit about its foundations in Unix with technology from NeXTSTEP I was more than curious to see a Powerbook Titanium G4. I was not disappointed.
    • The polish and elegance exemplified in the physical design and packaging of the Titanium G4 is perfectly matched and blended with the brilliance of Aqua and OS X. I cannot stress this enough. Basically: it works, elegantly. From recognizing my Sony TVR310 Mini DV8 at plug-in to the beautiful GUI this system is a work of art. The pretty front and consumer-oriented functionality (I could write a story about trying to get my Windows machines to import video through the add-on card and give Appendices on driver hell, but I'm through with that nightmare) is buttressed by a rock-solid UNIX foundation. It is incredibly inviting to drop into the command line to build a custom Apache with mod_perl, or even to rsync my development server for downtime development.

Of course, I have to use VirtualPC for Windows compatibility testing, but even this is less tenuous than Win4Lin under Linux.

My work has not suffered in the least as I have transitioned from an Intel/Windows/Linux development environment to OS X. In fact, I can say that my workflow has improved now that I am using a polished GUI seamlessly integrated with a world-class UNIX OS running on exquisitely engineered hardware. I am over-awed and give Apple a standing ovation of appreciation for my Titanium G4 running OS X.

If I'm gushing its because it's worth it. This is the first time I've spent $2,700 on a computer and had no regrets. So, if my gushing annoys you, tough. ;-)
