With the exception of toilet water, all domestic running water is expected to be drinkable.
I don't know about the US, but in the UK this is certainly not true. Only mains cold water is classed as potable. Domestic hot water should never be used for drinking or food preparation, not because of the low risk from lead poisoning, but the very real biological risk it presents. Recent regulations here regarding sealed and screened header tanks (also increased use of combi boilers) do something to ameliorate this risk, but seriously, if you are ingesting domestic hot water then lead poisoning is the least of your worries, especially if you follow recent guidelines and set your DHW temperature to a bacteria-friendly 38-40C instead of the old-fashioned 60C. (Apparently it is very dangerous for hot water to actually be hot).
I don't think dish-washing or mixer taps present any real danger (metallic or biological), as the amounts ingested are verging on the homeopathic. Even taking DHW into account, most domestic pipework is taken up by the heating circuit. Unless you drink the little squirt of water that comes out when you bleed the radiators, you are better off sticking with existing lead-solder joints here.
Compression fittings would be a better choice for a new installation, because current lead-free solders are really not fit for purpose. Plastic push-fit systems are also a possibility, but I would prefer to wait 5-10 years to make sure the current generation really don't suffer from the seal degradation problems of earlier systems - (then again, is plastic safe?).
Finally, most UK toilets are plumbed directly into the mains, so as long as you drink from the cistern rather than the pan, it is a lot safer than the hot tap.
Should I have a plumber re-run copper all over my house?
If they soldered those pipes with lead... Then yeah.
But that had nothing to do with your sink.
Er... not really. Although there may be a small risk for potable water, most of the pipework inside a house is for non-potable water. Taking the lead out of ALL solder (RoHS) is about protecting plumbers, not householders. If you have existing Heating and DHW systems jointed with lead solder, leave them be - they will be far less prone to leaks than any of the current lead-free solder compounds.
This put me in mind of the old TRB track "Power in the Darkness" from about 30 years ago. No mention of TPB, obviously, but the underlying sentiment still holds
Today, institutions fundamental to the British system of government are under attack: the public schools, the House of Lords, the Church of England, the holy institution of marriage, even our magnificent police force are no longer safe from those who would undermine our society. And it's about time we said enough is enough and saw a return to the traditional British values of discipline, obedience, morality and freedom
Freedom from the reds and the blacks and the criminals
Prostitutes, pansies and punks
Football hooligans, juvenile delinquents
Lesbians and left wing scum
Freedom from the Niggers and the Pakis and the unions
Freedom from the gypsies and the Jews
Freedom from the longhaired layabouts and students
Freedom from the likes of YOU!
(BTW Tom, if you're reading, I 'stole' my current copy of this track off the internet, hope you don't mind.)
I finally got my department head to hunt me up a stapler not made in China... the result, one seemingly older that I am and likely to last longer than I will.
It's not a slightly fire-damaged red Swingline, is it?
Now let's say you, as a singer-songwriter,musician, download one of my favorite songs of yours, "Candle in the Wind". You wrote it, performed it and played the music.
'Flamebait' is a bit harsh for this post - the official commemorative medals of the time even read Flavit Jehovah et Dissipati Sunt, so there was contemporary recognition that the 'Protestant Wind' was the major factor in the victory.
The cannon technology is still impressive for the time, though, and certainly would have contributed to the Royal Navy's domination in the following centuries.
All servers should be running Linux....The server could be on fire with mice inside chewing the wires and it will keep serving data for the next 2 years without any updates.
That's true for Slackware, certainly; with Ubuntu Server I wouldn't count on more than about 18 months...
Good ratters, at least in my experience, are always a bit hyper. They make very poor house dogs, and if you value peace and quiet, soft furnishings or printed matter you really need an outbuilding to keep it in - oh, and better make sure it's far enough from habitation not to annoy the neighbours, because they are noisy, yappy, annoying little buggers. That said, probably a lot more effective than cats or snakes
Personally, I would go for conduit / enclosed ducting for any runs through ceiling spaces, and get a professional pest control firm in to deal with the immediate problem - if you have rats, loss of network connectivity could be the least of your worries.
Carved with compasses into a desk in the Warwick Mathematics Dept. Lecture Theatre 3, circa 1980:-
"Analysis proves what is obviously true, but may not be."
I have to agree with you, real analysis wins the "least likely to inspire" award across continents and through generations; they generally only inflict it on you once they know you're hooked.
Another vote for anything by Ian Stewart - he has a gift for explanation that is incredibly rare among academics, both as an author and as a lecturer.
A lot of his recent stuff is popular science / mathematics, including co-authorship of the 'Science of Discworld' books, but his earlier stuff, especially 'Catastrophe Theory and it's Applications' and 'Galois Theory', are shining examples on how to write textbooks for undergrads / non-mathematicians.
He doesn't seem to be as widely known in the US as he should be, perhaps because Warwick doesn't have the cachet of Oxbridge, but personally I find his writing streets ahead of anything by Hawking or Penrose.
It's fairly clear to anyone with a functioning brain that the Conservatives will win the next general election.
And from the summary:-
..what will certainly be the next British government..
I can't deny the Tories are strong favourites, but anyone who equates a probability of 75% - 80% with 'bound to happen' is looking to get their fingers burned, whether it's on the racetrack or the financial markets.
Your "12 times more likely" statistic only holds water when you include suicides. When you consider that over half of all firearm-related deaths in the country are suicides...
Oh, that's all right then, only SIX times more likely. Hard to see what these pinko liberals are whining about when you put it like that.
UA93 was shot down by the Airforce, which was the right thing to do. Why people in the U.S. are still clinging to this bizarre "let's roll" pantomime is a mystery to most of the world's population.
Someone made a tough call; someone else higher up decided the public wouldn't like it, so concocted an Alamo/Iwo Jima fantasy that would sit better with the masses. Trouble is, now the fairy-story is out there, it's going to be decades before they 'fess up.
I'm not a big fan of conspiracy theories, but ask yourselves which of the two scenarios seems more plausible - if you think the "let's roll" bollocks rings true, you've been watching far too many "Die Hard" movies.
Not a popular opinion in the UK/US, but I always thought the USSR won the war (in Europe at least). Looking at it objectively that seems quite clear, whatever Hollywood may have been telling us for 60-odd years. The Eastern Front was where all the killing and dying happened; D-Day, North Africa, Italy and the road to Berlin were just a side-show by comparison.
A 25yo Depp would have been awesome for Spike, but even if they start shooting now, he would be 45 which is just too old.
(Given that the guy is 7 months younger than me, that was quite a sobering sentence to write - Now I have to face up to the fact that I will never be the young, cool one if I take up a career as an interplanetary bounty hunter *sigh*
... British citizens can purchase a UK TV Licence,
In the spirit of this thread, I have to point out that the UK is a constitutional monarchy, so it has subjects rather than citizens.

+/- 40 what?
I'll give you the + 40, as there's a fair bit of difference there, but - 40 is pretty unambiguous.

There is no reason to bother with the rituals of law and mercy with such enemies.
If you believe that, then you are "such enemies" - an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind
JerryLeeCooper, is that you?
Oblig.

Nice try, but the lyrics are by Bernie Taupin.
(As a quick rule of thumb for Elton John tracks, if they don't totally suck, Bernie probably wrote the words.)

The Google SLA guarantees 99.9% uptime per calendar month, so about 45 minutes outage would trigger it.
