  2. Not plastic on Science Gifts For Kids? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Don't fall for anything made of plastic that says "Educational!" on the package. Science toys don't teach kids anything. Parents do! Look for something that you can do and learn together. Steer towards gifts that have wider applications, e.g. don't get a telescope, get binoculars! Don't get a microscope, get a hand magnifying glass! Don't get a nature DVD, get a bird book!

  3. Re:One issue on IAU Proposes 3 New Planets · · Score: 5, Informative
Also by the definition since Charon would be a planet... wouldn't the moon need to be its own planet?

Charon differs from Luna because Pluto and Charon jointly orbit around a point outside either of their bodies, whereas Luna orbits a point inside the Earth. Pluto and Charon are therefore (currently) technically a twin planet system.

  5. Re:"Visible to the naked eye..." on Comet Machholz Now Visible to Naked Eye · · Score: 1

...in my experience means: "Visible to the naked eye of an experienced observer under the age of 40 with good eyesight whose eyes have been dark-adapted for at least half an hour, on a clear night in dry weather with no moon, at time at least three hours after sunset or three hours when the object is at least 40 degrees above the horizon, on a hill with dry air at least a fifty miles from any town with a population of over 2,000 ."

Exactly right. Take back the night. Learn how to curb light pollution at darksky.org.

  6. How to see it on New Comet for the New Year · · Score: 4, Informative

It is these types of comets that frustrate people who are interested in astronomy but don't know where to look.

You will not see it with the naked eye unless you are under very dark skies away from city lights. You will have more luck with binoculars and even then it will only appear as a dim smudge of light.

Finding it in the sky will be an exercise in frustration unless you are already comfortable orienteering the night sky. Your best bet will be on January 8th, when the comet will be just to the right of the Pleiades, an easily locatable star cluster in Taurus.

This page at Sky & Telescope has a decent finder map. Happy hunting and even if you don't see it, enjoy the night air. It's good for you...

  11. Why do we care? on 2004 Venus Transit In Pictures · · Score: 3, Informative

A dot on the sun? Big deal? YES! The transit of Venus was a very important event in the history of astronomy and science. Previous transits were used by clever astronomers to calculate one of the most important measurements in all of science: the Earth-Sun distance, or 1 AU. By observing the transit of Venus from two distant locations on Earth and comparing the measurements you can determine the parallax angle. With those angles and one side of the triangle measured, simple geometry gives you the Earth-Sun distance. Once you have that number you can do all kinds of fun things; like figure out the distances to the rest of the planets, or by using the Earth orbit diameter to calculate stellar parallax and the distances to nearby stars, and on and on from there. The Venus transit is a *very* significant event.

  12. Re:The Incredibles Soundtrack vs Die Another Day on Pixar's Next Movie: The Incredibles · · Score: 2, Informative

I have no idea why they're recycling soundtracks. Maybe that's a starting trend...

This is a very common practice. Music soundtracks are one of the last things done in movie post-production. (You need a near-final cut of the film before you can score it.) Trailers, which come out months in advance, will use other appropriate music as place holders until then.
