If you are writing code for yourself, make it as quick and dirty as you like. This benefits you in time and effort.

If you are writing code for the Linux community, making it as accessible as possible. This will bring more people into the fold and more people means more resources. And more resources will ultimately benefit everyone who uses Linux. So this benefits you to.

  10. Max BS on Great Game Characters Compensate For Plot? · · Score: 1

Great characters add to the game, but for Max Payne, without the thick film noir atmosphere and well done graphic novel elements(i.e. the writing and the plot) of the game, it's just another 3d shooter. Oh let's not forget stunning graphics and bullet time. It may have been an arbitrary example, but Max has a lot more to credit for being a great game than a memorable character (which, while memorable, isn't remarkably deep).

I mean Duke Nukem was a great character, and all he had going for him was a butch haircut and some great one-liners.

The advent of more people having access to quality recording hasn't lifted the talented home recorder out from the musical underground. The only way I see the gaming side of Linux growing (short of a 1000 fold increase in desktop users) is for a game developer to make a truly awesome game and have it for Linux only.
Since this would financially be the equivalent of putting the development money into a wood burning stove, it wouldn't matter if the linux community pirated the hell out of it.
It would draw people to the OS just to check out the game. This would all have to be done almost as a sacrifice for the good of Linux by a donor entity with deep pockets. Perhaps if it doesn't succeed, it can always be ported to Windows, where it should be able to make it's money back.
A gigantic pipe dream, but still fun to think about.

When we are able to break out of the flat monitor into true 3d and immersion, the direction of games will suddenly shoot off in a whole new direction because of the new aspects this presentation.
VR has had a stigma for a while because it was introduced when the technology wasn't anywhere near ready. When the time comes that the technology is GOOD, games, application, society as a whole will change in ways I can't possibly predict. But it will change. And I'm still waiting.

  23. Parallels to Ion Storm on Duke Nukem Versus Take Two? · · Score: 2, Interesting

this sounds like the same drifting, unfocused development methodology that IS had for Daikatana. They may not be living like rockstars, so they can make the money last a little longer, but with aparently no risk management, I'm sure the feature creeep and reworking for the game has been a total nightmare.
They have been wise to keep themselves out of the media. I think they learned something about the meteoric cratering of Ion Storm by letting the media see what a mess the internal workings had become.
I'm more interested in the postmortem of this game than the game itself :)

  24. Re:Then what format isn't lossy? on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 1

In terms of frequency response, CD's do beat LP's. Sound is subjective though, so it doesn't matter if it is a perfect recording, it just matters that it's good enough for you (the listener). Hell, most people bitch about cd's (if they bitch at all) that they sound too perfect. Go figure. If the AAC format is anything like mp3's at 128kb/s, most people won't be able to tell what is being lost in the translation.
