While I have not had the opportunity to try the program beyond some minor playing around, you could try Moovida It's marketed as a media player which does it all and runs on both Windows and Linux. I believe it's in the Ubuntu repos as well.
If you do try it, drop me a line about how it performs. I'm thinking about finally putting in a media computer this year.
I like the idea, although I would suggest a few things:
1) Accounts to upload should cost some money (one time or annual fee) - about $500
2) Minimum play times - 10 minutes.
3) Warning pop-up which you have to click through to start the video
4) Mandatory rating after watching along with optional comments.
5) Having an unrated section so people REALLY REALLY know what they are getting into.
Let's cut to the chase -- the iPad 2 that Apple just released pulls further ahead in the battle with the only real competitor on the market: the Android OS 3.0 "Honeycomb" Xoom tablet from Motorola Mobility.
And the engineer in my soul sings! Summary and THEN the backing info!
One other thought. Why the hell can't Thunderbird work with exchange properly if everyone else can?
Disclaimer: I am a Mechanical Engineer by trade however my current job does not require 3D capability from my CAD program.
While I agree with everyone that this program is not for the big boys of 3D modelling (although it would be the cat's meow a decade ago for 2D work) and that there are many free alternatives out there which will better this program, I think many people are missing the point. Solidworks actually released something for Linux - this is not to be underestimated. This is the 800 pound gorilla of CAD systems at the moment and when (not if) they throw their weight behind Linux and release something which handles 3D FEA modelling and such that will make a huge difference. They should be 100% applauded for doing this.
As an aside, I'm not sure why people would complain about it only being 2D. How much great design was done using a drawing board and a T-square? Not everything requires the high end equipment that car manufacturers use. A straight forward 2D drafting program is sufficient for most any hobbiest and small operation.
The good news must be that all issues of unemployment, finance and social service must be resolved in Utah for their legislature to spend time on this. It must be a utopia!
I searched for the 'like' button when I read that. I haven't had enough coffee yet.
This was prior to Facebook going over to XMPP. There was about a year or 18 months where facebook chat was their own homebrew protocol before jumping to XMPP. Pidgin had a plugin within a few weeks, Kopete waited eight or ten months for it.
I got caught on this when using the phone's built in messengers. Made a $40 phone bill $170. After swapping to the unlimited plan (cost an extra $5 but unlimited text and net) I switched to eBuddy which handles Yahoo, Facebook & more a la Pidgin/Kopete.
By the way, does anyone know if they are planning a new version of Kopete? it seems like all real development has ended on it which is a pity because I loved it until the lack of facebook support for months after Pidgin had it killed it for me.
I will watch the youtube videos just to make extra work for Sony - even if it's only a second or two of their time. I would love for them to come knocking - I don't own a PS3 (nor intend to), never owned a PS2 and my wife's PS1 is collecting dust in my basement. In fact, except for the PS1 only Nintendo has made it inside the walls of my house.
Perhaps Unity will light a fire under Gnome like Chrome did for Firefox...
Mod parent up please. Unity (specifically 2D) is the only DE that is making me look long and hard at jumping from LXDE. I love LXDE but I miss the polish. (Disclaimer: Former diehard KDE user who left after it became clear that real development had stalled except for it being 'pretty').
There's nothing more obscure sounding than dumping the standard GNOME desktop and X along with it. It doesn't get much more set apart from Linux and Unix in general than that.
Manufacturers can justify why tablets are so expensive. Large capacitive-sensor touchscreens are not cheap. Nor at the (relatively) high-powered processors tablet computers demand, or high quantities of computing-grade flash storage.
No, the screens and flash storage are not cheap - yet. It took 25 or 30 years for computers to go from being more expensive then a car to being at the point now where people will buy laptops on impulse. With the expanding markets being squarely aimed at mobile computing, the quality will improve across the board and the price will lower drastically. Cutting edge adopters always pay more for less.
I wouldn't be so sure of that. It's either Dell did the math and they will make more money owning AMD & ATI then being paid by Intel or they are using AMD to leverage more cash out of Intel. Frankly, I like the idea of owning AMD more likely, just for the vertical integration aspect. I would trade a little less profitability in the short term for something like that.
I agree WRT the lack of discretion. I know I have started removing friends from various social sites because of their lack of discretion in certain things (drugs, sexual lives, etc). If somebody googles my handle and finds my likes of mountain biking, computers and nature photography, I'm not exactly worried. If they find my friend's likes of LSD, child porn and Hitler, that's a problem.
I only reviewed it briefly and I agree that multitouch is a must. Hacking it to have the AppStore is a non issue in my eyes but things can change. As well, if Ubuntu's Unity interface becomes solid, I can see dumping Android for it as well. I know some of Canonical's moves within the open source community have not been the best, they have overall been extremely good in pushing linux forward and giving back, especially with respect to Google and Android.
I'm still waiting for an Android-powered iPod competitor on the North American shores. The Archos 4.3 looks about right but it's not here (as far as I know).

I thought the sig was insightful regardless. Great quote.

Wasn't the Mesh idea part of the OLPC since it would be primarily used in areas without infastructure? And I believe they use this in Tibet as well.
I'm not a Star Wars geek but I seriously want that Yoda statue.
Oh, and I thought Episodes II & III were better then Episode VI and quite possibly V.

My football has only three downs you insensitive clod!
Actually, the blog 55 Yard Line has an excellent article on whether or not more coaches should go for it on third down based on yards to go for a first down and the line of scrimmage.
is this just a way for a guy to spend five fun years with his kid while drawing a paycheck?
If you could, wouldn't you?,/p>

Oh, and I'm Canadian. *flips Sony the bird*

That doesn't mean it's the wrong decision.

If I played the stockmarket, I would purchase Dell because of this - I think it would work, and work well. We'll agree to disagree?

That is a very good point.
And yes, I can say brand identity without punching myself.

I knew Tycho Brahe was a real person, but Penny Arcade still jumped to the fore. I was thinking "Tycho is Dead? SHIT!" before I clued in.

Do you smell that? That's the smell of the middle eastern dictators and kings collectively shitting their pants.
