    I agree with a good bit of libertarian philosophy - like the portions about the government shouldn't be able to tell you what you can and can't put in your body or what you can and can't do in the privacy of your home. I don't agree with a near-complete defanging of the government.

    The government is supposed to be (in my eyes) an organization to protect us from things that can screw the individual over (other large organizations, like corporations) as well as provide for the common defense and needs of the people. Nothing more and nothing less.

    If they're important enough that we want them, we'll try extradition first. If extradition fails or extradition treaties don't exist, then the States would likely send in special forces to kidnap them. Depending on their profile, they may or may not ever see a court.

    If they're not important enough to warrant sending in commandos, then we'll just go with extradition. And if the country doesn't have extradition, well - then we'd probably send in special forces in this scenario, too...

    The Dreamcast, regrettably, wasn't exactly a successful console. What if that same setup was on the 360 today? I'd think that would have a heavy impact on PC gaming - just for the myriad troubles you can save yourself from the technical issues.

    My second ever computer's HD died. When it did, all I saw was my Windows desktop just sitting there - unmoving, like a digital corpse. I restarted and heard "click click click" and thought "why does my computer sound like a metronome?"

    Incidentally, "The Sound of Failing Hard Drives" sounds like an awesome song title for a geek death metal band.

    According to Google, it's this. It translates from Russian back into English as this, which reads as "Well crap, we all will die!" I'd paste it here, but we all know how Slashcode mangles any foreign languages or special symbols.

    Oh, and I have no idea how I know this, but Russian for Brraaaaiiiiins is "Maaaassssgiiiiiiii".

    So really, if Russian zombies ever invade, some poor sap is just going to think it's a hobo saying "Musky" and they get bit.

    General government stuff is open, yes, but the Bush administration has been wearing down "CLASSIFIED" rubber stamps by the case. That's one of many ways that we are not as "open" as we used to be.

    Even back in the day, it might have been like:

    "General government [redacted] is open, yes, but the [redacted] administration has been wearing down [redacted] by the case. That's one of many [redacted] that we are not as [redacted] as we used to be."

    No longer - now it's Classified So We Can Get The Terrorists And Save America by God's Grace (TM).

    Yes, it would be unfair to Microsoft. But to be fair, they're not really used to that little thing called competition.

    If a company can do the job just as well (or better) for less money, isn't it in the interest of, well, everyone (sans the corps who lose bidding) for that to happen?

    The last game I bought with my own money is GTA: San Andreas. I've probably spent upwards of 300 hours playing that game, and I could spend 300 more just for all the fun stuff you can do in it.

    Diablo II is another one. I've got over a thousand hours in that one, and I still go back to it. If you design a game well, the players will buy it. This is just publishers trying to compensate for their glaring inadequacies.

    AVG recently detected the OpenOffice 3.0 installer as a trojan.

    It also did the same with keyfinder, a program that discovers the serial for Windows XP after it's been installed. (How I miss the days of just looking in the registry...) I have a lot of customers who lose their serials (and sometimes even their CDs), and I get a bit annoyed when it gets erased off of my flash drive every time I plug in it.

    Thankfully I can restore it back to its original location, but it's a hassle.

    My layman's guess would be the ambient temperature underground is lower overall, so while the equipment would indeed still generate heat you could just use venting to disperse most of the heat throughout the rest of the facility and it wouldn't affect things too much. The entire silo would be like one giant heatsink.

    According to TFA (and TF previous /. stories), they don't have any such agreement. They were suing just to try to stifle competition - ironically because they said such competition was uncompetitive.

    If you understand any of that, you may have a future career in law!
