NVidia runs too hot and too loud to be put in a small form factor case (I don't see them going crate sized like the XBox). I think that it now would be a good time to invest in small 3D hardware companies;) maybe time to look for another company that was formed by former Silicon Graphics Employees.
Beta hardware should be running by end of 2004 so I would expect them to make a decision on who is designing the system pretty soon if they are serious about keeping their 2005 deadline. (guessing 18 months to go from paper to woring beta hardware and to give time to game developers to make games).
just some thoughts on the situation... first, it's been said before that by going w/ Linux it will help the German economy more than by going with windows. second, 90% is a great rebate discount. But what happens 5 years down the road when MS decides to not support the piece of software that they have already sold and instead tells the people of Munich that they have to buy new versions of the software at full price? Third, this is a good way to bring Linux to people's homes. Didn't the x86 processor (and subsequent MS OS) become popular due to the fact that it was all over the workplace and people wanted to use it at home? not exactly like that but i hope you get my thought.
and just so people don't think i'm some Linux zealot, i use winxp and beos. i've tried several distributions of Linux and don't like it... yet. As more people use it, it will definitely get much better for home use.
Yes, they must take back the CD if it won't work in your player due to "protections".
I purchased a CD from Best Buy 6 months ago and it wouldn't work in my car. It wouldn't have been a problem since I have players in my computers, home theater, etc. But I listen to the majority of my music in my car. I took it back to Best Buy, explained to them that the craptastic "security" measures would not allow me to use the CD in my car. He refused. I spoke to a manager and they agreed to give me store credit.
whatever, that's fine with me. I picked up a CD that actually worked.
Seriously, its ridiculous. 30 some posts, a dozen complaints.
People who are car aficionados will glady throw down 12,000$ to turbo their cars or 130,000$ for a ferrari. I know people with multi-million dollar homes and the house is all to themselves. Is it crazy to pay 800$ for a PDA when you can get one that does the same for 99$?
If people have the money then let them spend it on what THEY want and quit complaining because YOU have a problem with it. If you think it's too much money, then it's not for you.
It's not about how many they can sell. Right now ATI is known as king of the hill and the press is pretty positive about it. Look at all this negative press that has been circulating because of this nvidia debacle. Word gets around and when people look to buy a new card they are going to remember how ati whooped up on nvidia (not true, but that's how they will remember it) and they will buy the ati brand because of its reputation (lets ignore the better 2D... =)
Now you have nvidia who are releasing a card several months late that will not surpass (ultra version barely did better, non-ultra won't do it) the current leader, ati 9700 pro.
anyone know how much of the Art-X technology is incorporated into the current ATI high end models?
When they had their "Superman" script expose, did anyone notice how fast they got rid of their story and immediately became WB's bitch boy? Somebody said it earlier, the site is just a chance for their editors to get into the biz of writing scripts for major studios. One of their editors wrote a review, and in some supposedly 'scoop' another reviewer wrote how great the script will be (/is so far). Would you believe a guy who is reviewing movies from a movie studio, who is also trying to get in the business with that studio? Of course not... I don't think 1 thing will change.
I hope the gaming community ignores the new gaming site. We don't need a compromising fuck face who will back down at any sign of money being involved on a layout that will stay the same for 8 years (its called re-investing in your business, look into it).

If a person wants to stay in that mindset, why bother buying ATA133 drives or moving away from ISA slots? Hard drives are limited by the actual hard drive unit itself and not the connection (much anyways). Firewire drives don't differ much from their comparable ATA drives (firewire ~40+ Mbytes, ATA66 ~66MBytes).
Serial ATA is a good prequel for faster drives in the future. I'm not an expert on hard drives but if someone had a solid state hard drive, traditional ATA would slow down the transfer of the drives, but Gen3 Serial ATA would give a sustained 600 Mbytes transfer per sec.
I don't know the theoretical maximum of traditional ATA, but in the last 4 years they have went from ATA66 to ATA133. The plan is to go from SATA200 to SATA600 in 4 years. To me, this is much friendlier for future faster hard drive technologies.
The more profitable a new technology is, the less chance it has to be adopted by the general public. This is because the cost will be high.
Couldn't firewire have supplanted USB if it wasn't for the fact that Apple wanted to make huge profits off the technology? Don't get me wrong, companies have all the rights in the world to charge what they want, but it doesn't mean that it will be accepted.
I just recently set up a NetGear 802.11b setup in my house for under 100$. The only reason I set it up is because it was so cheap (Wireless router and 1 wireless usb adapter). Now I am shopping for a PDA and I will be buying a PDA that will be able to access my home network. I will probably use WiFi with the PDA in public areas since I will have the capability to. If the network equipment was expensive, I wouldn't care about WiFi access through PDA and wouldn't care about WiFi access that businesses offer.

How many people in the market for a sub 100$ card are going to be running at 1600x1200 in the first place? How many people in the market for a sub 100$ card are going to have PIV 3.06 gHz cpus?
This card is meant primarily for budget computers. Yes, it will probably list for 99$ but on the day they are released, I bet they will be going for ~70$ on pricewatch. Sure, a Geforce 4 Ti4200 is ~120$ and the ATI 9000 is ~100$, but for a person running a Duron 1.2 gHz, spending an extra 50$ on a chip for a 15" or 17" monitor that can only max out on 1280x1024 is a waste of money.
This was a HORRIBLE review by extremetech. I mean, what were they thinking? "Let's review a sub 100$ video card with video cards that cost ~300$ when they first came out"? "Hey! let's review this BUDGET card at 1600x1200 with BETA drivers!"
On a side note, I wonder how much power this chipset will use up? The notebook version may wipe the floor with the big two in the notebook arena with decent performance and great power consumption.
A friend of mine got in trouble for playing the local radio station over his restaurants speakers. I forgot exactly who it was, but they said that he would have to pay up if he wants to play radio stations and that all restaurants have to do this.
AGAIN. You are comparing a used truck to a NEW car. New things generally tend to cost more.
Why don't you compare a new insight to a new f150? or a used insight to a used f150? I just saw a used 2001 insight go for 13,000$.
I could easily say "i bought a 500$ pinto and that gets 22 mpg, don't you SEE THE SAVINGS buy buying a pinto?!?" 11,500$ saved on the purchase of the car and almost no difference in mpg. -not taking into account maintenance and etc.
Anyways, Toyota is a pretty good company when it comes to timelines. They don't make them unless they know they can meet them. I'm guessing that they have already mapped out their timeline for the next 10 years.
Oh, the Toyota highlander has been undergoing long term tests for about the last 8 months. Well, this isn't a regular Highlander, it's a hybrid Toyota Highlander.
as for the "sending probes through the gate first and stuff"; In the beginning of some episodes they will talk about what the probes picked up on the planet and then they will be sent in.
I'm glad for that, would be tedious to have to see them send in the probe in the beginning of nearly every episode;)
A good reason to why they chose this size for it is because the number of batteries this car needs are enormous. Sure, you can put it in an elise (probably not, but just work with me) but you'll have enough charge to get up to 30mph before it dies. A Rolls Royce weighs about the same.
How many 8 passenger cars do you see doing the quarter in 14.5 seconds?
Electric drag racers are meant to run in the 1/4 mile and don't concern themselves with how fast they eventually can get. For all we know, this could take 1 to 100 km to reach it's top speed of 180 km/hr. But with 440kw (over 1000 hp) it won't take 100 km.
And for the parent thread... 180 mph isn't that high. My 7 year old car does 146 mph and only 146 mph because it has an electronic governer prohibiting it from going any faster. Look at most (if not all) of the AMG Mercedes Benz, they are all with a top speed of around 180. Porsches have been doing it for generations. Most low end cars can make it to at least 120 mph. for something with 440kw of power, 180 mph shouldn't be too hard.
Or, you know, they could leave people the hell alone. I don't like gambling. I don't gamble. But I like govenrment regulation less. If people feel the need to blow their life savings away, so be it, but don't punish everyone else because of it.
there is a reason to why gambling is regulated. it is not a good thing for people. it preys on the poor.
but hey, why stop w/ gambling? I'm an expert swordsman and i don't see why the government is getting in my business about killing people.
they rigged tetris machines (pacman, etc) to pay out. it wasn't just poker-type machine, regular old arcade games. Gawd knows how I would have kicked some ass (and how much money the arcade would have lost) on 'ol SF2 =)
what gets me is that they in essence banned all video games.
Got a gameboy? Illegal. PS2? Illegal. New computer w/ solitaire? Illegal. hehe, i guess they should go after microsoft/nintendo/sony and every retail outlet for supplying "gambling tools" Oh and internet cafes for playing games are banned.
They probably decided to ban the whole lot so it would be easier to prosecute those who are using electronic games for gambling. Think of it this way, if they only ban arcades that pay out money then you have arcades which would look legit but have gambling arcades hidden in some room (yes, people will go that far). if you just ban everything, then you throw it underground but it wouldn't be so hard to find those who are breaking the law (3k euro electrical bill for that shack? hmm, something is suspicious here).
I don't agree w/ the extent that the law reaches. the should just have made it so if you have an arcade that pays out that you get fined a ridiculous amount and some mandatory 5 years in prison. that would certainly make shop owners think twice.
It seems that Moby wants to pin the blame on technology and not himself or his company. I didn't even know Moby had a new CD and couldn't care less. Yes, I bought (after downloading mp3s) 'Play'. I haven't heard anything new of his on the radio. Whos fault is this? Moby for making a CD which isn't good enough so that he can sell the rights to every song or the record company for doing a crappy job of advertising it? OH NO!!! It's the techies fault! I mean, with napster and audiogalaxy gone they MUST have downloaded his music.
I don't care if his new CD is as good as the last one, I don't care in hearing it and won't miss it. I guess thats a 'techies' fault and not his for actually making the CD
DVHS is not meant for the general consumer market and was not developed to replace DVD. DVHS is meant for the videophiles who demand the most out of their home theaters. No, I'm not talking about those with an HDTV and a store bought sony home theater speakers. I'm talking about the people who easily spend 40k on the components and may possibly have a dedicated room for home theater viewing (including home theater style seats).
People who demand the best and have the money to afford it are the people who will be this DVHS player.
