Check out Flac2MP3 which I'm using to generate a metadata-complete MP3 image of my FLAC files. Whenever I add a couple of new albums to my archives, I run a shell script and the MP3's are available for my iPod. Album covers from Amarok don't transfer over, but it's a plenty good system for me.
I think the characterization CAGW makes at their actual article on Open Source is much more balanced. This headline assuredly takes it out of context. Certainly, slamming CAGW as a Microsoft pawn is something only the most fervent Slashdot proselyte would do.
While I still urge you to actually read the actual article, the most appropriate paragraph is (emphasis added)
This is an issue that is just beginning to blossom, and many in the policy world have yet to choose a side. It is important that the issues related to open source be fully understood. Many states that are suffering from huge deficits may turn to it as a quick solution, only to find themselves more in debt later down the road.
Some of the points made inside the article are utter tripe. I would argue against the points made therein, but CAGW's stance I would agree with.
Remember, the world we live in is sometimes not so great, and doing the world a favor is not always repaid in kind. The GPL won't change that.
Be careful that you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.
Organized religion may been been instituted by chiefs to validate their rule (along with other things, like what you suggest), but to believe that what we say, think, or do has any bearing on whether there actually is some creator-being outside our system is misguided.
You may find the way the methods of organized religion distasteful, their beliefs flawed, their system corrupt, but it does not mean that religion itself is an "invention" without merit.
The best example of an expansion is when instantiating a type variable in a method's return signature.
For example, when using the visitor pattern, you have have a signature that looks like this.
public <RetType> RetType accept( FooVisitor<RetType> visitor ) {... }
This allows you to write one hook for visitors which could return several different kinds of objects, as well as being able to depend on getting the correct one out in whichever method invokes the accept(...) method.
You can also use generics in your own ways in your classes. There are several other powerful uses.

The changes mentioned in the other products have been integrated into JSR-14. So while it would appear that maybe nothing that big has happened, you in fact have a useful 1.5 preview.
This is clearly based on the assumption that stockbrokers have the first fucking clue about technical issues. Remember, all it takes is one person with an opinion, and the herd mentality takes over from there.
One other way that it is different is the pirating scene. You can't just find a crack for EV Nova in fifteen minutes. Once they go to the PC, there's going to be a lot more applying themselves to defeat their system and steal their money.
Usability Engineer is actually quite an interesting position, IMHO. It focuses not so much on the raw, technical nuts-and-bolts, but on how people work with machines. You'll often find jobs (in the real world, I suppose) like this going to people who've graduated in Human Computer Interaction at places like CMU or Stanford.
My own opinion is that it's a very important field. I think everyone knows we're not going to win Grandma back from Microsoft with the current state of Linux on the Desktop, even if it is getting better. Apple isn't going to win, because it's-- what, 3x as expensive? Even if I love them!
So it's up to the Open Source movement to generate something that doesn't provide what coders THINK the users would like to work with, but something that they can demonstrably interact with well, and understand enough to use.
A further opinion is that all we need is a little more handholding... It's not a bad thing! Don't you want Microsoft to start losing?
"All the blood they're generating is based on my own. Trillions of cells using pirated DNA are created every single month! They can't be allowed to do this. I mean, who's going to pay parents to be concieved if all it takes is a couple ordinary body parts?"
This, of course, following her proposal of a fee for all parents to pay the RIAA since their children are pirating music.
ADV is the company responsible for the most recent release of Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as the source for pretty much any seriously awesome anime not already sweeped up by Manga Films.
The taste is there, and I think they might have a higher focus than this, especially since the target demographic is so much more inclusive. (DBZ and Pokemon are SUPPOSED to be for children.)
I noticed lex, sed lex: anyone care to enlighten me on the Latin origins of these and other common Unix utilities?
It's coincidence, I believe.
(Dura means hard, but that's not in question.) sed Unix -> stream editor, Latin -> "but" lex Unix -> program generator, Latin -> "law"
I don't see that much connection here. But it is kind of interesting to see the overlap. I wonder what other nifty short latin words ended up with utilities?
Exactly. What do you mean what happened to the music industry? It's bigger than ever! Don't forget it's only single sales that are dropping, album sales are continuing to grow!

Can't believe nobody has whored the Wiki page with the technical scoop!
I cost the Times $1,000,000 and all I got was this lousy T-Shirt

I'm identifying myself as CowboyNeal.
Why are we even still reading these things? I'll believe it when I see it.
Try DVD Price Search for DVD's. They also have an excellent coupons section.
When I was coming up, I thought Oregon Trail was really hard. Then I played it a couple months ago, and beat it with no problem.
The difference? Realizing that you didn't have to stop to hunt every day. Especially if you couldn't even carry any more food.
Bang! Bang!
Indeed, straight from their site.
The mobile you are locating needs to be switched on and within network coverage
How novel!

An you know what they say about assumption...
What you'd actually look for to pick that up is the TPB of Transmetropolitan, if the bookstore is matching substrings.
I mean, you could buy the comics, instead, but you probably want the bound version.

I hope it turns out to be worth it for them.

Time for Microsoft to step up to the plate. Why would you think that you had to read a EULA if they can get away with this kind of $hit?

Shouldn't we know better to think that cats give a damn about us?
Change the way cities are built my ass! I still haven't seen many cities designed for pedestrians (atleast not in the US)!
They were clearly referring to cities on the moon.

This is the first good thing to come out of Houston since the Space Shuttle.

This is so hilarious for me to see OTC and NMH fans should get into Wilco.
I'd also like to voice the alternate opinion that anyone into Wilco should check out OTC and NMH! Remember, folks, theres more than pop/alt.country!
They're all great, though.
Have fun listening, gang!
