  8. The cost of legalization on Mexico Decriminalizes Small-Scale Drug Possession · · Score: 2, Interesting

I don't use drugs because they are illegal. My employer could terminate my employment, I could be jailed, etc. If drugs were legalized, then there would be no barrier (however artificial) for me to start using drugs. Maybe I enjoy it and starts affecting my productivity, my way of life, I become addicted, etc. So while this might be in the minority, there are a number of citizens who are not using drugs for the sole reason that they are NOT legal. Legalizing them would remove this barrier and actually cause more drug use. I am not saying that is horrible, but it is a side-effect that is seldom brought up.

  9. Re:A word from a NoScript Forum Moderator on NoScript Adds Subscriptions To Adblock Plus · · Score: 1

What might be a good idea (for all extensions in general), when it opens up the NoScript page after an update, it there was a direct checkbox/link to "Don't show this page after updates" which would set the appropriate extension preference. Then the conspiracists would see a more visible mechanism to not show the NoScript page.
I personally, like an extension that is updated frequently. It means there is active development.

Right. Though I like to have my calendar available from my email application and I personally don't like running a separate calendar app, I agree that they really are separate disparate applications that really have no reason to be merged. This is what extensions are all about. You can add the calendar to Thunderbird via an extension if you really want them integrated into a single app -- the lightning extension adds Sunbird, and ReminderFox (disclosure: I am a dev for this extension) adds a lighter-weight calendaring function.

Don't hate on the old dudes. Oldtimers be FUNDAMENTALLY SOUND, yo. That's why they always dominate the young whippersnappers. The young dudes are out there running and gunning, and the old dudes are boxing out, not forcing shots, and posting defenders up underneath the basket. Whereas I'm shooting turnaround fade-away jumpers from the three-point line. That's why I can't wait until I turn 45 or 50, and am suddenly awesome at basketball. At least I figure that's how it must work.

  15. Re:Old Bugs on Ask a Mozilla Person About Firefox 2.0 · · Score: 1

As a developer, there's always bugs in your inbox. If it has gone untouched for several years, it generally means that there are other priority bugs that are getting looked at instead of that one. The alternative to keeping bugs opened and unlooked at for years (which is not very useful) is to just blanket-close all of the low severity problems that have been opened for more than two years (for example). If the submitter finds it still important, they can just reopen. I think this is a fairly healthy thing to do, as some bugs truly are no longer relevant; and if a user reopens an old one, it at least has another chance of having a developer give it some attention.

Yeah, you must not look at massive quantities of internet porn. This feature does become more useful when you get a bunch of tabs open (15-20) and you have to start scrolling through all your tabs. At that point, it's much easier to select which tab you want from the dropdown.

Heh I do this all the time. :) Why do you say "never ask" this? Because it shows you don't thoroughly understand the code? I work on software with many different configurations across many different platforms, and very often it works on one person's setup but not another. I was just wondering why this bad - does it show a weakness?

I thought the list of available shows was pretty dull until I saw that they got fuckin' Freddy's Nightmares! I was a huge Nightmare on Elm St fan and I would take all the Fredddy I could get. The first episode was really good in that it actually showed the backstory of how he came to be. Granted Freddy himself only appeared in a handful of episodes and the ones without him were pretty horrible, I'm still going to watch a couple of these for memory's sake.

And they got V too! Another Freddy/Robert England connection.

  22. Does nobody own up to just plain downloading? on Challenging Music Downloading Myths · · Score: 2, Interesting
I always hear the argument from illegal downloaders about "I like to try before I buy". They don't want to waste money on crap, so they download it first, and if they like it, they buy it. While I"m sure that there's some people who actually do that, is this really the norm? How come we don't hear from people who download albums and never replace them with purchased CDs?

I know in the last couple of years, a buddy of mine has obtained over 25 complete downloaded albums, and has not went out and purchased a single one, though they are among his favorite bands. That's roughly $375 that did not go to the record companies or the artist. In this case, somebody is losing money somewhere. I'm sure that this is the more likely scenario than the usual music-lovers-just-want-to-try-it-first voices that I usually hear. I just want to hear some people admit that they download music illegally because they can, it's easy, and it's free. I bet that even if there was an iTunes-like service that contained the same un-DRM'd formats that people illegally download, it wouldn't matter to a lot of people when they could still get it for free.
