It strikes me (and most/. users it would seem) that fuel cell laptops are a total joke for countless reasons. Everyone knows that battery technology needs to take a quantum leap forward...

Looks like/. needs to update their Mac hardware icon from 'cyclops' to 'cheese grater':P
On a side note, one of the main reasons the PPC 970 core (aka Power4) took so long to become the Apple/IBM G5 was because Apple insisted on keeping the Velocity Engine alive. Motorola balked at producing the G5 chip with an AltiVec pipeline and thus IBM was awarded the contract be default. As an Apple tech/user I'd much rather see IBM making the chipsets anyways, so this is a good thing in my opinion.
of the world's biggest evil empire - the insurance industry. WTF is wrong with people? Hacker insurance? How the hell do people expect to be able to prove they were hacked when most companies dont even know how to check to logs on their "firewall"? More money wasted that should be creating actual jobs for people who need them./rant
Hellooooooo AMD! Rumors abound about Apple and AMD signing a new microprocessor deal for the next round of Apple Macintosh computers. Look for more at MacWorld SanFran in January.
I have fond memories of my ECTE 196 course that I just completed in the UoW labs. Tri-boot machines are actually what they had - Win2k, WinME, and Linux with KDE. Yeah, some of the machines had issues but I can't imagine it was really THAT much of a problem. Who cares really, this isn't exactly/.'s headline du jour.
Great, both the US/Canada and European markets have 10x as many internet USERS as we have PEOPLE here in Australia...
and I wonder why I cant get a DSL line here in tha 'gong.
well well well, looks like another runner-up in the Fields "I wish that Matt Damon forgot about those lines" will have to be forgone, since there is only one true champion. drunk aussies rule
I have been a big fan of your's for a long time now, but your most recent album, '18', is warm pile of pig vomit. This is what happens when you go from being an 31337 underground artist with a small but loyal fan base, to a sell out MTV whore. Thanks for playing, next artist please.
you don't have to pay the MS tax. I recommend MWave. I purchased components from them for my new system and they were excellent. Also, eBay is a great place to find hard drives and SCSI cards.
ThinkPads (T-series in particular) are the best notebooks on the market, period. This is disturbing that they have discontinued LINUX support, especially in light on their adoption of LINUX on workstations/servers. Doesn't make a lot of sense, really.
It's about time that schools started doing something like this. I wish my HS had done this back in the day. We had to sneak into the college computer labs across town to game, and then we'd usually get in trouble with the 2.5-0 (campus security). Kudos for giving kids something fun and safe to do!
For fuck's sake Verizon how about upgrading you telco equipment to offer broadband for the rest of us? I live in an area with 30,000 people, most of whom own a PC and are dying for high-speed access. Try spending your money on projects that will actually turn a profit...
something Bell Atlantic and Nynex never seemed able to do.
Great idea, huh? Just go ahead and have a system track the books you purchase with your credit card and voila! an enormous database that profiles people based on their reading habits.
Think this sounds far fetched? Don't be so naive. Remember, libraries are already required to handover records to the Federal Gov't for matter dealing with "national security", what makes you think certain books won't be flagged.
So let me get this str8...
we're worried about bacteria from Mars destroying all life on earth. Yeah, I think we'd best focus our attention on GW's posse before we worry about aliens. NEWS FLASH folks, by the time a man sets foot on Mars we'll all be driving H2 vehicles.
I have repaired laptops for many years now, so here's my 2 cents:
BEST - IBM ThinkPad T-series - All other laptops are playing catchup to the IBM T-series line of portables. They have the best weight/performance/features ratio of any laptop on the market. IBM offers a fully 3-year warranty that covers your laptop internationally, no other mfg does this like IBM. Since this is/. I should mention that you can load your favorite *NIX distro onto one of these without a lot of trouble.
The biggest drawback to the T-series is the price - starting at $2400. If you can afford it, this laptop is king.
Sony Vaio - Beautiful laptops that run great until you have to get them repaired. The backlog on parts from Sony is a joke - 3-6 months easy. Toshiba - They used to make great laptops, but have fallen in years past to mediocrity. A reasonable cheap solution. HPaq - Forgetaboutit. Neither HP nor Compaq makes a laptop I would purchase, period. Apple - The PowerBook G4 is beautiful, so long as you can stand running Mac OS. X is better... much better. The iBooks work well too. Apple repairs on laptops - mail it to them and get it back in a week fixed. At least you know it'll be done right.
You know, people are always amazed that I know how to do stuff like install Windows/Office, configure TCP/IP, etc. -- remedial IT tasks.
"How did you learn to do all this?" is the most common question.
"Um, well, I know how to read and can use a mouse..."
I mean, c'mon, it's no more difficult than operating your VCR... er, bad example.
Tech know-nots have nobody to blame but their own ignornace and unwillingness to pickup a book and read. Here's a hint: BIG yellow book that says "Dummies" on it. Trust me, I own a couple myself.

Beautiful beaches, women, and weather... and a wifi network to boot! This is just another of the thousands of reasons that I need to move to Hawaii.
