Just getting the hue and intensity right (and being able to vary those) will go a very long way
but I can't understand how you gonna get the hue and intensity right.
Here, on the article they state:

The photodetectors on the rear surface are used to record the intensity and color of a source of illumination behind the object.

So, besides some situations, depending on light orientation, surface reflection, etc... when you place the object it's already affecting it's enviroment.
How, the object dosen't read his own shadow?

This is almost a standard, every company pushes, as well as they discontinues without further reasons, and not letting anyone to keep developing the software.

Already answered on a previous post(s).

One of the real big problems to me, in open source, its the same of proprietary software people are trying to reinventing the weel and not making it a standard circunference, that means there is lack of talking beetwen open developers. Your team develop a project over source forge, if GNOME and KDE had already agreed on some standard features you could use some wizzbang 3.1 opensource-already-developed-by-some-other-group that would work with said GUIs (yeah yeah, they aren't just GUIs, but no, you have to reinvent the weel and keep comparing your PI.

In order to create art on a computer you have to understand what's going on the medium, why you are choosing a computer instead of paper or canvas or a sharp aged twisted metal structure. The object of your expressions must be well fit to it's bounds and ways. To do art on a computer is NOT an easy task (well neither on the other media) remember you may use inter activity, you can make something show itself exactly the same way for years and then program to a change occur on some specific second. When you create on a computer you are tying that to the specifications of our epoch in other words you'll be probably making some very dated artwork, picture your self crafting in 1980, drivers become outdated, specifications change, if your art only runs on system X it my be lost if something bad happens to X. You may have to rewrite your art. You may have to keep a computer from the distant year of 2001. As for those critics , ask them about glass painting...
