Perhaps a bunch of Silicon Valley types should buy some MS shares and start a proxy war over where MS is headed (demand that MS pay out their war chest for example)?

Ah, but MY point being that if MS offers companies advertising for less money, or offers web sites more money for carrying their ads- or some combination of the two, then Google has a problem.

Does it matter to the website owners if Google gives better ads or if MS pays more for worse ads? Remember that Google's ads run in a lot more places than just on Google's servers. And while search is nice (hell, the company that I work for just bought two Enterprise Search Engines), it doesn't drive me to any of the web sites that I have bookmarked.

  11. Perhaps on Microsoft Bids $44.6 Billion For Yahoo · · Score: 3, Interesting

the real reason to buy Yahoo is to kill it.
I can see this in a two prong attack to get to Google.
First, by buying Yahoo, they get access to all of Yahoo's users which will be migrated over to MSN. This will give MS the strength to talk to Madison Ave and have the technology that is good enough.

Second, MS will then offer cut rate advertisement (or perhaps a new click model which is deeply discounted), which will force Google to react or lose market share.
Remember that Google is primarily a advertisement firm with some killer search technology, not a technology firm that also does ads- so to use a Ballmer quote from the past, to kill a company, you "cut out the air supply". Google's air is adverts.

Finally, this will cut into Yahoo's open source projects; just a little benefit for MS, but still, it's there.

To a monopolist, $40b is cheep money for killing 2 birds with one stone.

    Now, will it happen?
    That's another question.

At work, and granted it's a fair size HMO, we use Universal Content Management by Oracle, formerly known as Stellent's Content Management System.
UCM allows for named accounts with control over access, plus a full audit log, full change log (plus revisions), and a centralized location for searching for document of any type (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, AutoCAD, MPG movies, TIFF, etc.).

Supports work flows as well, a nice plus if something needs to go through a formal process, gives nice audit trails, and supports 3 different full text indexes (FAST, Verity, and database) of the stored content.

Well, think of it like this:
While you are paying Cox to play you the show / event at a time of your choosing, the media company is losing money in that you are not seeing the ads shown at the original time- the money goes right to Cox's bank account.

Now, if Cox said, we're going to offer two levels- level 1 will cost $1 (made up price) and will be ad sponsored (where the money is split one way), and level 2 will cost $5, but will not have ads (of which some larger percentage will go to the media company), I'm sure that people would find this more palatable and the market would be the decider as to which method is preferred.

(Of course this totally ignores the greed of the media company- I'm sure they'll figure out someway of stuffing in commercials somehow; be it product placements or sponsorship.)

A long time ago, MS ran their accounting department on AS/400s as the story goes, and other F500 companies where pointing this fact to the MS sales people. MS then, again as the story goes, tried to move everything over to a Windows based system, and failed. Failed horribly, and to the point where MS had to make a tough choice- run AS/400 systems and run the company or not and not get payroll and bills out on time. What did they do? Created a company to run the accounting department systems, moved everyone over to that new company, and then to the outside world it appeared that MS was indeed eating their own dog food.

On the other side- MS does need to move against Google in some meaningful manner- Google's judo flip and really put MS off balance in a way that will play out for years to come- and I doubt MS shareholders are happy with the flat stock price for the last 7 years.
