Nothing new here folks, same method was used to nail Ted Kaczynski - of course it was much more difficult back then so a far greater accomplishment.

  5. Men with fragile egos that can't handle the idea that women may be better than them at [ fill-in-the-blank ]

Facebook realized their AI chatbots had created a new language, and right away understood this is not something humans should want AI to do, so they built in a requirement that the AI chatbots only use English.

The problem with AI is not responsible scientists, but greedy mo-fos who are going to eventually use it as they please, the rest of the world be damned. This is the nature of humanity.

Ever since attending the AWS conference, I have been wondering if the reason AMZN is not concerned about still hemorrhaging money and not making a profit after 20 years now is because the end game is becoming To Big To Fail.

I think Bezos et. al. learned a valuable lesson from 2008 and applied it as part of their business strategy.

  9. Answer is NO on Ask Slashdot: Are We Living In the Golden Age of Bailing? (nytimes.com) · · Score: 1

Bailing is nothing new, and it has not increased.

Bailing is pure bullshit - I have never bailed on plans with a friend and never will. That is the definition of friendship. I might not want to go when the time arrives but guess what, I do, and am usually happy I did, because I feel good about keeping to my word and seeing a real friend is always good too.

Acquaintances on the other hand? Bail away... And here is a clue, people who bail on you are not your friends, they are acquaintances.

Absolutely. Lucky for me I figured out the pay-to-play society that was being set up and decided against leveraging myself to get a stupid degree. All any degree other than a PhD shows is that you are good at jumping through hoops.

Yeah, Steve Jobs was the genius driving Apple - proven after being fired then returning and taking Apple to the stratosphere.
Personally I think AAPL is a long term short now - they are obviously still riding Steve's coattails as he did the best he could to set them up to do so; but without a once-in-a-lifetime visionary genius, they are nothing special.

  13. Atlas Shrugged on Ask Slashdot: What Are Some Books You Wish You Had Read Earlier? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I was left with two distinct ideas after reading this book that I'd wished I'd had 20 years earlier.
    1) It's damn ok, if not mandatory, that a person feel good about making money off their talents
    2) Pure unabashed capitalism is an extreme philosophy.

This response by this person is part of the problem - it's so damned simple, if every employee refused, the issue would drop.

However the pay-to-play society we've built makes saying no a problem as most people are leveraged over their head, starting with their consumerist education leading to a huge student debt to be paid, as well as blatant bling bling consumerism. All this leads to the viewpoint expressed in the parent post.

Smart people know debt is slavery and avoid it, money is power for certain.

Agreed - I have over 400 vinyl albums, most of which I ripped to Mp3 only because I don't want to pay twice for music I already have - so I have to put up with the clicks, hiss, rumble and wow and fultter of vinyl while listening to these tracks, and do not for one second think that audiophile vinyl is any better, it is not, digital blows vinyl out of the water, that is why vinyl was left behind so long ago.

Hipsters like vinyl, 70s chopper motorcycles and skinny skateboards, all three are sucky technology, the 70s choppers are outright dangerous, something those with a few years under their belt know; they're the ones that left them behind for better tech.
