If the government (or a big rich company) can delcare that something is for the good of the public, can they not just as easily aquire the "Internet", ie: its underlying infrastructure consisting of fiber/copper?
I am not really sure where this idea could lead, but it doesn't seem that far fetched either.
You are correct. CNN previously did offer "free" (with a small Ad at the beginning of the video stream) for free....after ad-based support was shown to be unprofitable, they yanked the "free" streams.
Why on earth would a 'food service' computer either have on it, or have access to a list of prospective students? So they can preemptively issue dining cards in case of alien attack?
No. The meal cards were most likely issued because these prospective students were recruited to visit the campus. During their visit, the prospective students used their free meal cards. The cost of these meals would have been billed back to the recruiting/marketing department at the university and the recruiting/marketing department would have to account for the cost and associate it with a specific prospective student.
This is pure speculation on my behalf for this university, but this is the exact process used at the university I attended and a few others that I considered.
Just fyi, I use both Vertias BackupExec and Powerquest V2i Protector (It allows one to backup a machine using a method simlar to ghost). However, now that both of these are owned by symantec, I suppose I will have to investigate using Rsync with Cygwin over SSH for the windoze machines.
For those of you who don't have access to general aviation, I would suggest a demo flight at your local flight school. You can take a "Discovery Flight" during which time, you can ask for a "zero G pushover." And, if your instructor is nice, he/she will let you fly the aircraft through the pushover yourself. It is a rush and it is $49
Technically, it does not just go into a dive straight down. It does a zero G pushover. This means that the KC-135 starts a high speed climb, as its airspeed starts to decrease, the pilots push forward on the yoke and drop the nose of the aircraft.
Because the aircraft is so big, it takes a while for the nose to go from nose up climb to a nose down decent (not straight down, but a steep angle...45 deg to be exact). During this "pushover", (aka parabolic maneuvers) the pilots monitor their G meter to maintain 0G. Then, the pilot pulls back on the stick and the crew feels approx 1.8G's...or, close to twice the normal force of gravity.

How to Pirate Music and Video Without a Computer

There has been a lot of concern that people are using the Internet these days to (dramatic chord) "Listen To Music"! People around the world are logging into my.mp3.com and listening to music that they bought previously on CD even though THEY DON"T HAVE THE PHYSICAL CD WITH THEM! This has apparently cost artists and record execs somewhere in the vicinity of 300 bazillion simoleans (a simolean roughly equal to three pounds of bullshit). Less responsible companies like Napster have even written programs that let you LISTEN TO MUSIC YOU NEVER BOUGHT!!!!! While this must feel like a grenade to the groin of all the poor top 40 artists out there, it is nothing compared to the powderkeg that sits in everyone's ghetto blaster, home stereo system, and VCR. I am speaking of the built-in ability of every piece of analogue consumer audio/video entertainment system out there. Welcome, fellow music lover to the secret world of Analogue Music Piracy.
It would seem that the Powers That Be don't want computer users all over the world to be allowed to listen to music they like whenever they want, wherever they want. It makes one wonder why it is then, that on conventional analogue stereo equipment there exists the ability to record not only albums you have legitimately purchased, but also music you have never paid for. Before you read this article any further, please be warned. You are about to enter a clandestine world of secret knowledge, where truths and lies mix like tequila and 7-Up in a plastic cup at my sister's wedding. If you continue reading this article, you have agreed to join the Analogue Piracy League. Abandon all hope ye who enter here.
Good, you've agreed to join. Welcome brethren to the Analogue Piracy League. The following may shock and disgust you, but it is the truth. Many electronic audio appliances contain a secret back-door button that allows you to pirate their precious works, either from albums you have purchased, or even from a "Streaming Analogue FM Ether-verse Transceiver" or "Radio". This button is called the "Record" button, and as a member of the Analogue Piracy League it is your new best friend. It's right there beside the "Play" button, sometimes it's disguised as a red dot. I bet you wondered what that button was for. To start pirating, go down to the local corner store and purchase some "blank tape". Have it placed in a brown paper bag, and return home. Above all, speak to no one.
Once safely ensconced in your Fortress of Piracy, put the "blank tape" into the cassette deck, then press "Play" on your CD player, and press the secret "Record" button. That's all there is to it. Congratulations, you have done exactly what My.MP3.COM does, except without all those pesky passwords or that expensive computer equipment. Should you turn on your Streaming Analogue FM Ether-verse Transceiver and record from that, you will be doing what Napster does. Please remember however, should you record Metalica off the radio and then invite the band over for a beer, it would be best to hide your evil cassette tape recordings or Lärs (or Blóürk or whatever his name is) will kick your ass.
Video is even easier. With a VCR, not only can you record streaming full screen video off of your cable or antenna (from the Streaming Analogue Video Ether-verse), but there is a secret code in the TV guide that automatically programs your machine to pirate TV shows and movies AUTOMATICALLY! What were the fools who made these things thinking? They are practically begging you to steal their valuable television programming. Well big dumb TV guys, watch out! You may have sunk the good ship iCraveTV.com, but The Analogue Piracy League is coming up on your port side - PREPARE TO BE BOARDED!
Ok, -RANT- I stopped reading your post when you stated, "Astrology has more hard fact in it than psychology does. At least we can look up and see the constellations and planets. "

Idiot. You are one of those people here on slashdot that produce static.....Granted, static is sometimes interesting. However, get a clue my little boll weevil.
Dude, shut up and think before you speak. You don't know what you are talking about. I spent about 10 seconds looking up the bulb for my Infocus X1 (a DLP projector). The price is under $300 with a 4000 hour life! That comes to about 7.5 cents per hour for the cost to operate. A link: http://www.compuplus.com/insidepage.php3?id=100227 3
It is people like you that call into my help desk to tell me that I need to replace their computer because their "screen is black" and has been for 2 weeks. Their system came back to life when the surge protector was turned on.
You are a good example of natural selection gone wrong.
It was perfectly legal to carry a knife on a plane prior to 911. I used to carry my pocketknife all over the world. All that mattered was that it did not go over the max blade length (I think it was 4").
> How many people do you suppose are in prison right now for smoking pot, and how long has that enforcement been going on?
Yes, but is the judge's 8 year old grandchildren, wife, or slew of other people around him smoking pot? I would say that most people, that know how, are downloading music. The percentage of computer users that download music is much higher than people how smoke pot.
I have an Epson 880. I get the black (knockoff) cartridges for approx $1.25 each and the color for $3.50. The printer prints at the 2400x1440dpi, the color quality is very high.
Just because the printer you selected is expensive to operate, don't knock the entire inkjet color market.
Back when I was in a digital design class 2-3 years ago, we were often presented with complex logic questions in homework or quizes. We had "fill-in-the-gate" blanks. Sometimes, it was really hard to get the "correct" outputs from a given set of inputs using known, common, gates...sometimes we simply had to prove that no gate would satsify this requirement. However, part way through the course, someone suggested a "divine intervention gate." This was represented schematically by showing all the input lines and all the output lines going to a little cloud. It got a laugh out of the teacher.:)
Somebody please mod parent up as insightful!

Am I the only one who thinks the Mars plan is a good idea?
Yes.
For those of you that might not know, Knoppix can be downloaded much faster (usually) via a BT. The main BT download page is here.
Download KNOPPIX_V3.6-2004-08-16-EN from here
Download KNOPPIX_V3.4-2004-05-17-EN from here
There are German versions of Knoppix available from the first link I referenced.
It has been done.

I sat there for about 10 seconds trying to figure out what in the world this would be.
When one doesn't obtain enough sleep, one's brain doesn't function normally.

This process is repeated during each iteration. A great graph of this can be found on the KC135 homepage at: http://jsc-aircraft-ops.jsc.nasa.gov/kc135/trajec

Now, if someone can sell yellow snow to the eskimos, that would REALLY impress me.
