    I would agree that Windows98 is pretty beat. However, Office 2k is not dead.

    In fact, I bet most people couldn't tell the difference between Office97 and Office2000, especially if you are just using it for standard word processing.

    Why are they bothering with Windows 98? Just think, after they get Qihang 98 working, they can work on Windows Golden Dragon aka Windows ME

    I agree. Vshell is great and integrates seamlessly. It's not terribly expensive and the software is top notch.

    If you need Windows sftp/ssh clients, they also have the best clients on the market.

    [Paying customer, but not affiliated with Vandyke, just been using their products for 5+ years now]

    I don't run Cygwin on our prod servers but I do run it on my desktop and it works great.

    What I do is create a batch file called scmd [super command] that opens up a connection to localhost through ssh.

    Then I just create an alias to my /c and Im able to use all the great unix utilities under windows. You be surprised how something so simple like tail/head works so well when analysing log files in Windows.

    Not to get too offtopic, but it's all great for running cron jobs. The AT scheduler is the worst.

    And there are always old school MUDs. Being a DM or even a builder on a MUD requires a lot of different skills such as creative writing, unix skillz and probably most of all, patience from whining players.

    I can't think of a better game that you can build, create and then let all your friends play on for free [open source code]

    Enlighten us then! What is it like to browse the web in China? Unless I'm totally misinformed by US propaganda, I assume you can start up a website that criticizes your country's policies?

    Doesn't China automatically filter all content into their country?

    I really would like to learn more.

    MS made it so easy to install patches, it ridiculous. You can either go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let it figure out what patches to install or you can just run the automatic update in your systray and it will scan updates for you automatically.

    The only thing you have to do is reboot your computer.

    I love n00b cam sites. The "egg" is that they don't always turn off directory browsing so you get to see images that they really didn't want you to see.

    I have had the same problem. My current system is really beat and needs a bad upgraded. Unfortunately, I can't really savage anything from my old system.. not even my damn ISA sound card cause it's all PCI now.

    Anyways, I have been playing some games on my company laptop and have reallly enjoyed kicking back on the couch in the living room rather than being bent over a deck in the den. Unforunately, my laptop isn't as fast as I would like it to be.

    I think the xBox is where I'm going. I can play on the 36" tv in the living room and still not feel like an outcast of the family ;-) I just have to make sure nothing is good on TV so my wife doesn't want to use the TV for .. er.. TV! I don't think I'll have a problem there.

    Really? I've had basically ZERO issues on Windows, and random crashes on Linux with Opera. Most of the Opera issues I've run into are 'site display' related. I don't know what you mean by "non-compliant", are you following an MS-approved list? Like the Hardware guide? In any case, IE was being a major nuisance (because of the virus/cache issue), and it definately had to go.

    I just had Opera keep crashing on me and no matter what I did, I just couldnt get Shockwave installed. Maybe it was this norwegian crack I used to make it "free" [doh].

    I meant compliant as in corporate standards. Normally, removing IE and putting Opera isn't on the approved actions list. This probably only applies to bigger companies though...

    Oh, and the Deer [havokmon.com]outside my window - ok, I'm done rubbing it in.)

    I don't have deer, just some ground hogs. Check out this beauty though! 19 inches

    Just be careful.. soon he/she will start installing their own software and the next thing you know, you'll be trying to figure why WinSpeed 2002 doesn't play nice with Super Contact List 98 muha!

    You're pretty brave. The last thing you want to do is install a non compliant program on the president's puter. I actually had Opera crash more on me than IE.

    I would love to see the IT folks when they come over to fix his computer next time and he has no IE to run updates and Opera comes up as the default web browser. Unless you *are* the IT dept ;-)

    Unless you are developing in .NET, in which you'll most definately need VS.NET Which is just like notepad, but a few thousand dollars more expensive ;-) Intellisense is pretty cool though *ducking*

    In my experience, this is not true. Agencies that produce web sites will not code for every browser version, especially something like WebTV or NS 4.0x. A company will say that 90% of it's traffic is from IE and they will build their site accordingly.

    99% of the time, there is no time for testing in every browser version anyways. If the site works well in most flavors of IE, it's basically good to go.

    That's just my experience of probably about 25-30 site launches.

    The only good thing about Napster was that it took the brunt of the traffic and hype from AG. While Napster was changing and millions of people were flooding the system, AG was running along quite happily.

    Of course, the best feature was that you didn't have to search for the song. Just throw whatever you want in the queue, come back a little later and you had all the songs you wanted.
