    I have an active account on my *nix box. If I disable logins ("suspend the account") the user can't login to shell, ftp, e-mal, whatever. The only other tactic is to delete the account. Now, the mail is bounced, but all current messages are gone, as well as any other files they may have on the server.

    How would someone implement a suspended account and bounce e-mail, AND leave their current files there in case they wanted to reactivate their account?

    On the software side this is true. Hardware is different matter. Every six months they publish, via their Service Source srvice tools, a list of the hardware that they will no longer provide service parts for in six months.

    Due to a CA law*, they have to provide the hardware parts for 5 years after selling a machine.

    Their computer and peripherials cycle through an Available, Discontinued, Obsolete, and NLA (No Longer Available) lifespan.

    It was rather amazing, because until they started doing this (about two years ago?) you could order service parts for everything from the Fat Mac to the Laserwriter I. Even Apple IIc stuff....

    * It may have been a strategy to avoid a class-action lawsuit, instead of a law. I wasn't working for Apple at the time this started. I only heard about it 2nd hand after I worked for them again.

    Options = u a.

    • u = Update /etc/dumpdates after a successful dump.
    • a = autosize. Bypass all tape length considerations, writing until an end-of-media is reached.

    -f = specify a destination file. [device] = valid path or device. Ex., /dev/st0 (SCSI tape drive).
    [location] = source filesystem you want to backup. Ex., /home

    Usage example: dump -0ua -f /dev/st0 /home
    Make a full backup of /home to the tape drive /dev/st0, writing until the tape is full or end-of-media is reached, then write the results to /etc/dumpdates.

    I read your other post about 802.11b interference. How you get around depends on what options you have on both your phones and your Airport. 11b has 11 channels. Channels 1, 6, and 11 can coexist in the same area with no interference.

    I have two access points covering my apartment, one in on 11, the other is on 6. I've avoided getting 2.4 Ghz phones just because no one publishes information as to how flexible the setup options are.

    Ideally, you'd have your Airport on 11, and configure your phones to the range between 1 and 6, allowing you to get around any interference from your microwave or neighbors.

    Once the phones get within 5 channels of your airport, your 802.11b is going to suffer. Sounds like that's exactly what happened.
