Imagine if you upload anime to YouTube, and it automatically includes an English subtitle.

Without the kanji, since a large number of Japanese words are homophones, I can't see this being practical in the near future. Text is different - with the kanji, it's not terribly difficult to look up the correct word and with kana grammar beside it, the task gets much easier. I can't see a machine understand a conversation in context, however.

"Clearly, the proper solution to this 'problem' is for mobile devices to have a proper web browser, rather than some half-arsed cut-down POS."

This sounds good at first blush, but it really isn't an ideal solution. I live in Japan and I have one of the latest au cell phones. It gets TV, I can use the camera to take pictures of Japanese characters and look them up in the included English/Japanese dictionary. And I can browse both normal "PC" (as the phone refers to it) websites and mobile sites.

I always, always, always use the mobile sites. Since I get charged by the packet, the mobile sites are much better because they are built to be low bandwidth (not to mention they're usually focused on the cellphone - the Final Fantasy site, for example, lets you purchase cell phone games and ring tones). I'd get killed (literally death by packets) if I browsed real web sites on the phone as the data transfer would KILL me (well sort of - the maximum I can get charged for more data is around $40).

If you're interested in that topic, check out The Right Nation. It's written by a couple of former writers for The Economist and while a bit of it is outdated now (it was written shortly before the 2004 election), it's really informative about the rise of conservatism in the US and the Christian's right's part in that.

While this maybe true, digg's voting is also very poweful (and I say this as someone who has had a slashdot account for a long time and checks it far more than digg). As mentioned in the editorial, bogus or lame stories get buried pretty quickly. Compare to slashdot's games section where Zonk's "stories," which either don't explain what he's talking about, are obviously slanted, are poor (and late) reviews or are posts in which Zonk simply didn't RTFA and flubs details remain standing. While these get corrected in comments (and if you browse with highest rated comments first, they will show up at the top) I feel that Zonk's posts would get buried quickly on digg.

Weather effects are fine and dandy, but I'm not entirely mistaken there were some holiday effects (or, more accurately, a seperate disc bundled with some game mag, probably Gamepro or EGM) in which outside the Christmas season would look green and plant-y, but using the Saturn's clock, when Christmas time rolled around would be filled with snow, santa outfits, and the like. There are some other similar (more recent vintage) titles, like Dokapon Monster Hunter for the GBA. I feel like there was another rogue-ish game for the GBA that only came out in Japan but the title escapes me...

Which is all to say that, the Dragon Quest Yangus title does back up your point, that genre is still alive and kicking, but it being a PS2 game with pretty cell-shaded graphics, emphasizes it more than (what many would call, but not me) musty titles like Angband.

While this announcement is a little surprising, considering the massive popularity of both the DS and Dragon Quest in Japan (believe me, I was there when 8 came out plus purchased my white phat DS and DS Lite there). They're going to make a fortune on this one, as everyone and their mother has a DS for one reason or another, and we might see DQ becoming more of a Nintendo franchise (don't forget that DQ: Slime Mori Mori was a big game for the DS, DQ: Monsters Joker is also coming out for the DS and there is also a game planned for the Wii) and Final Fantasy remaining a largely (aside from the DS games and Crystal Chronicles) a Playstation affair.

I am curious to see how they evolve the art style for 9 on the DS; 8 is still sitting on my "to play" pile of games, but from what I've seen it's pretty good looking. I'd hate to see a step backwards.
