    Congrats for Antares.

Yes, sending a rocket into orbit is a major breakthrough, just like it was half a century ago.

I know it thrills the hearts of the Galtians among us that some billionaires have finally succeeded in solving a puzzle that the rest of us solved collectively in the early 1960s, so I'm going to refrain from saying "big whoop".

Space will not be truly conquered until private enterprise makes it profitable to do so. So yes, it is a "big whoop" as you so eloquently put it.

Especially since I predict the greatest impact of North Korea's nuclear program is if they manage to time their detonation to be in LEO above Nebraska, taking out the maximum number of LEO satellites and spraying debris through orbit, possibly causing the Kessler effect. And that being in addition to an EMP causing massive disruption over the US. We are at the point where a single nuke can cause trillions of dollars of damage. Just getting it there is the problem. No more space program, public or private, until it's cleaned up, if we are to the point where a nuke in LEO can seed the cloud.

You make the assumption that a long list of authors indicates a truly collaborative research effort. In practice, this is very rarely the case. From my experience, nine times out of ten the work is done completely by the primary author or the first two authors. The rest of the authors are supervisors, technical managers, those who secured the funding, possibly a technician who assisted with the experiments, etc., who never even lay eyes on the paper until it's basically finished.

You make the assumption that the work is done by the primary author or the first two authors. It has been MY experience that the work is often done by the rest of the authors and the the primary or first two just take the credit. My $0.02

This is typical political BS so prevalent in the US. When the Dems blame the Republicans for some issue, the Republicans say the Dems do it too. That's regardless of whether either statement was true or not. The point is to deflect blame and raise suspicion of the other side. Further, since we can't trust the media to actually dig into the actual truth on this or any issue, the Chinese likely will be successful in their efforts.
