How lightweight, if it requires gtk+?

Can Xfce be used without GNOME or KDE? I'm looking for a very small window mangler I can throw into a USB pen drive distro, and the xfce.org site doesn't seem to be too clear on this.
Oh, wait, I found it. It requires GTK+. Hm. Are there any good WMs which don't have any gtk+ or Qt dependencies? Remember, I said GOOD. I've used wmaker and its ilk, but something a little more modern would be nice.
Oh, and I'm also familiar with DSL, but I hate Debian...
For the state to use a format under their "open formats," there can be no restrictions on its use. MS Office XML formats are patented. The article seems to allude to Microsoft licensing the formats for anyone's free use. If that happens, then OOo can implement them directly, and interoperate perfectly with MS Office.
But as with all things business, it's too early to tell, and read the fine print.
Does the UK still file credit reports by physical address? This bit quite a few people when they moved into an address, and the previous resident racked a bunch of bad debts. The new residents suddenly found they were being denied credit based on the history of the address.
So what happens when one of the human players on the other team does a slide tackle on the robot? Does the robot fall down? Does the robot get damaged? Does the human get injured? IANASP, but it seems like physical contact between opposing players is so common that replacing man with machine is either clumsy, scary, or both.
It's a foot and a half (38cm) tall and weighs five pounds (2.4kg)! I'm no physicist, but I can imagine what would happen.
One area that researchers are not keen on tackling, however, is robot armies. "Down through human history, the weapon that has caused the most deaths has been the knife, so all technology has a risk, but what we do with this technology is up to human beings," Mr Ishiguro said. "I don't think the idea of robot armies is a good one, but that's not my decision."
He also dodges the question of a robot insurrection, a possibility that will not have escaped anyone in the industry after the release of the Will Smith film I, Robot. "All these advanced technologies have an element of risk and we can warn of the dangerous aspects of robots in human society," Mr Ishiguro shrugs, "but cars, for example, successfully collaborate with humans and have been safely integrated into society.
Yeah, but cars aren't fully autonomous. These robots certainly appear to be. Even if they're only playing football (and that's soccer to the Americans), they certainly could be programmed to do other things. And I'm still not discounting the possibility of AI being created within my lifetime.
Microsoft today released their very own Malicious Software Removal Tool
Finally, an IE un-installer.
Microsoft has been including a malicious software removal tool with their operating systems since the very first version of DOS. It's called FORMAT.COM. Use it like this:
FORMAT C:
Then grab the nearest Linux CD, throw it in, and reboot. Malicious software gone, never to return.
The researchers concluded the Sumatra earthquake caused a length of day change too small to detect, but it can be calculated. It also caused an oblateness change barely detectable, and a pole shift large enough to be possibly identified. They hope to detect the length of day signal and pole shift when Earth rotation data from ground based and space-borne position sensors are reviewed.
Too small to detect? Then why is my watch running slow?
Seriously, this means we'll need an additional leap second once every thousand years or so. Unless, of course, something else changes the length of the day, which will likely happen first.
The nice thing about this site, as a developer, is that everything I was looking for regarding OS X is all here. Tools, manuals, FAQs, discussion boards, you name it, it's here.
whoo ha! finally.. i want a love-slave! can i grow one?..hopefully they won't have the "human rights" that i do though! har har har!
Well, you can have one, according to Isaac Asimov.
The Clone Song
By: Isaac Asimov
Tune: Home On The Range
Oh, give me a clone
Of my own flesh and bone
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
And after it's grown,
Then my own little clone
Will be of the opposite sex.
chorus:
Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
And when I'm alone
With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.
Anyway, it appears that they're actually trying to create synthetic living things, which is way beyond computer parts. If they can pull this off, it will be one hell of a hack. Humans playing God, creating life. Theology may well be shaken to its very foundations.
This is definitely cool. I'm actually looking into this for packet radio. Apparently you can actually hook up your computer to your radio and talk to other computers similarly connected...not necessarily FAST, but if you need to move data around in a crisis situation and all other communication links have failed, this would definitely do it. I've had e-mail sent via ham radio before, and I'm interested if someone can point me to the current state of the art here.
The question to ask is, are these things field upgradeable when the 802.11n standard is final? The site doesn't answer this question. You could be left with a very expensive b/g router/AP.

Is this supposed to be some sort of example of "no news is good news"? "Not much happening" is on the front page of /. I never thought I'd see that.
Wake me when something happens.
Windows Update is the big reason Firefox users keep having to use Internet Explorer. There's an ActiveX plugin for Firefox out there, but I don't know if (with masquerading the user agent) it will run Windows Update. Anyone tried this? There's also an extension that adds Windows Update to Firefox's Tools menu.
And as I discovered this morning, Google uses it. I clicked on a link in an email message sent to me, and...
So they use it for Gmail, but I don't know offhand if MySQL is what they're using for the index. To their credit, they are using PHP rather than Perl.

That's it, I'm going to bed early tonight. No more staying up until 2am on IRC and getting up at 5am to go to work.

Actually he cheated. Only the HTML is being served off the grill. The images are being served from a box in Southampton University.
Very nice how he crammed all that hardware inside there, though.
Oops, now it's /.ed. I bet you can grill on it now!
Oh yes, I know. I've done it before.

It would help a lot and free up quite a bit of bandwidth if Comcast would get all the spammers and zombie computers off their networks.
I am Billgatus of Borg. Your job as it has been is over. From this time forward you will service us.

Boring? I'm really excited about the upcoming competition between the pusher robot and the shover robot.
