Yes, but its always so much easier to put things like this into the "steps towards police state" file if it can be labeled as anti-terrorism. I mean really you could make a conspiracy out of anything. I remember when slashdot wasn't a gathering place for conspiracy theorist.
Nice post, its a shame I don't have mod points to bump you up.
Perhaps you aren't interested. But no one put a gun to your head and made you read the summary. I don't mean to be flippant. There are plenty of other interesting stories on the main page that fit your interests better.
With all due respect, that's part of what makes slashdot what it is. If people only commented on stories they had interest in, this would be a completely different site. Wait, actually, I think it would be a completely different internet.
I've heard a lot of people criticize Torchwood, but I really enjoy the show. Its fairly well written and has a pretty decent cast. Although I think the female lead needs a new haircut.
I would download Torchwood. You can usually find pretty decent quality rips of the HD broadcasts. If you find an episode that weighs in around 700mb, it should be pretty good quality. Or so I've seen from the ones downloaded.
Your logic would hold true were Windows a consistant code base, but as you look at the overall number of issues from Windows for Workgroups up to Vista, there hasn't been an overall decrease in issues, but a steady rise. Take a look at the bigger picture, Microsoft is saying that with Vista they have made a much more secure operating system. So secure that they are locking out a lot of companies that know security much better than Microsoft. The same claims were made with XP and similar claims were made with NT. Granted during the NT days, we called security "stability" and NT was supposed to offer much more stability.
What I'm saying is that they aren't writing software that is more stable and more secure, they're just continuing with the same "patch and pray" method that's been going on for years. If they're going to continue along this line, then we as users should be able to count on the security products we have counted on in the past to help bolster security.
And thanks for the refresher course in "deductive reasoning", they've obviously improved it since I was in school.;)
...didn't slashdot just decide a couple of days ago that the security companies like Symantec and McAfee were whiners for complaining that MS was making it difficult for their products to work with Vista? Hopefully something like this will make people realize that you can't trust Microsoft to guard their own henhouse. If they were truly a company that was serious about security, the number of "security holes" would be decreasing, not increasing.
Maybe we misread it when they said they were serious about security. Maybe the original message was "We are serious about security holes", but the word "holes" made some of the test audience giggle.
I have to agree 100% with this sentiment, especially since I was going to post something along the same lines. Frankly, this news might actually draw more sales since there will be a bigger awareness of it. I had not heard of the "AOL Premeire" so what type of advertising are they really putting out for it?
I don't think CA is ignorant, I think they are finding themselves behind the curve on development of AV for mobile devices. A common practice in marketing is to dismiss features or products you don't have by making it sound like people really don't need it.
Well, I have to admit to holding on to a couple movies for a LONG time because I just never really got around to watching them. I felt a little guilty about having those 3 movies sitting on my desk for over a year.
No offense, but when I see comments start with "(insert company/product name here) is evil", I immediately tune out and skip the post. There may be very valid points, but when you start off with emotional statements like that, I have to fight very hard to prevent my eyes from rolling.
Given how buggy games are at release these days, I shudder to think of the ramifications of neural interfaces connected to these. In the beginning when communication is one way, one could imagine the issues that arise from a stray thought. As it is, Oblivion crashes when I just exit the game. Now, add in an interface that reads my thoughts. I'd hate to see what happens when my mind strays away from the game and to something like, I don't know, my child crying or some such thing.
Now when the communication goes both ways, things could get crazier. I finally sit down to play Duke Nukem Forever and 5 minutes in a hit a bug that makes me wet my pants start calling my left shoe "Herman". Ah technology.
Its too bad I can't use my mod points to moderate the story. I think its funny how people now consider something posted on a blog as "news". If the/. poster actually read the "article" from this "new source" (whatch out, I'm " happy today) he (I always assume Anonymous Cowards are male) would have seen that Bush said "the Fraunhofer Institute, which developed the original MP3 codec, and codeveloped (with Sony, AT&T and others) the AAC format used by Apple in the iPod." Looks to me like he's saying Fraunhofer Institute had a lot to do with developing the iPod.
Lets use our collective big brains here to slam the administration for things that are actually going wrong, not some lame attempt to make them sound stupid.
Its great to post speculative articles and all, but seriously, I'm not buying into using the word "metaverse" no matter HOW many times you use it in one paragraph.
What I'd really like to know is how this was modded "informative". I don't think any of us were unaware that people swallow and regurgitate propaganda from both the right and the left. Just as the right is wrong in saying "All is right in the world" (no pun intended), the left is wrong in saying "America is ran by satan". I always hope that people on/. will use their big brains to actually process information they hear.
Your DSL or cable providers are most likely using Cisco equipment. After their purchase of Linksys, a lot more people have Cisco in their house than did before. Cisco, its not just for corps any more.
I always like how people on a "News for Nerds" site try to make others sound like bigger nerds than they are. "Oh sure, I might spend half of my salary traveling to Star Trek conventions each year, but at least I don't play World of Warcraft!"

Great post. Too bad it is now credited to an anonymous coward.

Haha, awesome. I think we might see a shift in Godwins Law to replace Nazis with Guantanamo.
...but will it be able to play Duke Nukem Forever?
..err, plight. Why don't I ever use the "Preview" button? /wail /gnashteeth
As much as I try, I'm finding it REALLY hard to have any sympathy for their plea ;)

As opposed to 100% of /. readers? ;)
I wish I had mod points to mod your comment up. It must be a slow news day for slashdot.

They should just call this decision "Old Yeller 2"
