I think the term you are looking for is "Mooninites". Observe this transcript of part of a recent visit by some of their more advanced citizens.

ignignokt: we are the mooninites and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with 100% of your brain
frylock: oh is that so and what is so advanced about it
ignignokt: well for 1 thing the moon has 1/3 less gravity than your earth i don't know if you can understand that but our vertical leap is beyond all measurement
frylock: so what your saying is your culture is more advanced because you can jump higher?
    ignignokt: yes observe
    (jumps)
ignignokt: its not working here err come in here help me explain our advanced ways hurry
err: did you mention the spelling?
ignignokt: yes we're excellent spellers challenge me
    err: yes challenge us both

What is interesting is that people are so ready to discount anything a person does if their political/ideological/religous views differ from them. I am really finding it difficult to see the relevance of Card's "insane rightwing religious" fantatisism to the fact that he is putting out a quarterly Sci-Fi magazine.

  10. Re:Too late to the game on Symantec Launches Anti-Spyware Beta · · Score: 1

At this point, its a matter of keeping up with the Jones'. The security industry (I guess any industry for that matter) is now all about "fad features". This is driven primarily by the people selling the software. Company A decides to create a spyware plugin and uses that extra feature to defeat company B. It works, so they continue to use the same ploy over and over again. Now, industry magazines start seeing all of these sales being driven by this new widget so they write an article on it. Next thing you know, said PHB sees a blurb on the front page of a industry rag and decides, "of course, I too must have spyware" and now it becomes a check box on an evaluation list. This of course forces company B to start producing a spyware product that, even if it is inferior to company A's offering, lets them now mark off that feature checkbox and not loose business to company A.

Granted, this is an over simplification of the process, but its basically why Symantec would waste their time. Now why is spy-bot or some other rock solid spyware solution not an option in the corp world? Its really what some would call a Catch 22*, spy-bot doesn't have enterprise wide deployments that they can reference, so they can't get someone to deploy it industry wide.

*I use "some would call" because I keep putting down the book before I read the actual part where Catch 22 is mentioned.

C'mon, how realistic is that? And why should we stop buying all their games, because they are protecting their work? Even if it was Blizzard behind the cease and desist and not their parent company, I really can't say I blame them. If I were Blizzard, I would have rolled out of my bed lined with $100 bills and told FreeCraft to knock it off too.

You can't tell me that *Craft doesn't immediately make you think of one of the fine Blizzard games that we have all enjoyed at one LAN party or another.

I agree that there should be opensource gaming projects out there, but seriously, think before you go a name them. Someone create an open source project call Age of Freepires and I bet you it will get shut down sooner than you can say Anti-trust Suit.

Blizzard is a company that survives by making money and protecting its investment. If I remember correctly, that is kinda one of the reasons we live in a capitalist society.
