    judging by the fact many kids in college are taking 'college algebra and trigonometry' (where they learn the staff they should have learned in high school but for whatever reason did not), the things in USA are as screwed up as in UK.

    Completely clueless post. You DO NOT oversubscribe T1. T1 is dedicated pipe. End of the story. You can oversubscribe Frame Relay, though. I worked for BBN Planet at some point, and was involved with oversubscription issues (Frame Relay). That was BS #1. Now BS #2 is "DSL requires one phone line, T1 requires many phone lines". That's 64 DS0 you have in mind, right? So, the reason it is BS is that "DSL requires one phone line" from the customer premises to the nearest DSLAM only. From that point, that has to be a fat pipe (but guess, what? DSLAM is another point you can do oversubscription.

    Just go to the rec.music.classical.recordings and read some of the discussions. There is some authority by the name Deacon who apparently was tremendously excited over Hatto, and then outright rejected any idea that it was a fake (he said he didn't trust the guy who compared the WAV file - that guy was a sound engineer at BBC!). He Mr. Deacon has to eat the crow.

    in computer science. it is mostly software engineering, hacking, lots of business-related staff. whatever 'science' is in CS, it is mostly math. So if you want to do programming/other computer related staff, why bother with the whole CS, and if you want to do science, why bother with CS too?

    In my case, I've ended up switching from computer science to math, and what I'm happily working on now. I simply want to learn something that does not change overnight, at the whim of the likes of Bill Gates, or 'new internet business requirmenets', or whatever. something more fundamental, if you wish.

    both will loose. Just like SACD vs DVD-A. Thanks to Sony (which pushed their proprietory SACD just when the audio industry agreed on incrementally better (compared with Red Book) DVD-A standard. Both SACD and DVD-A are now relegated to niche market. Now again: Blue Ray vs HD, and again: Thanks to Sony. I think the majority of the folks will be happy with the regular DVD plus upconverter (such as Oppo) to HD (like 1080p).

    and then lots of bad things can happen, like you can die from the cardiac arrest. of course it flushes other minerals too but seems like sodium is the most important one.

    (funny because I actually have to maintain low sodium because of the high blood pressure.)

    Many years ago, my boss finally got a terminal and 300bps modem to hook up to the mainframe runing VM/CMS. So we're talking after the weekend. He said: it's painfully slow to edit anything, but I've found a nice solution: I just drink beer, that slows me down roughly to 300 bps, so everything is just fine. The only drawback: he didn't get reimbursed for beer.
