I work with machine vision and cameras like these, and I have a feeling that by "objects" they mean that they've taken an image of the background and "diff"d it from the current image, then they can analyze the various objects that remain (are they connected? What color are they? are they in the same 3-d plane? Do they have the same recurring textures? etc.)

All these things are easy to do, and in fact, I have software on my computer right now (in the form of HALCON dev studio examples), that tracks cars coming and going from an intersection, people walking along the sidewalk and through the woods, and various other moving objects. I count 39 moving objects (including a tree that is swaying).

What this really is, is another frivolous patent, because I bet these examples are now infringing that patent. I guarantee that nothing they're doing is new.

I would bet the average salary is lower at HP than Apple, but is not uncomfortable, while Apple employees may be getting slightly better than average salaries. To say that the ability for a company to do a good job, support hundreds of thousands of people, and still make a profit is inferior or less efficient to a company that makes as much profit with as few people as possible.. well it's just truly shocking how little we want to deal with other people living near us these days.

    From wikipedia,

A Typical charging cycle is about 85% efficient, and the discharge cycle converting electricity into mechanical power is about 95% efficient, resulting in 81% of each kWÂh is put to use

    and

Modern gasoline engines have an average efficiency of about 25 to 30% when used to power an automobile. In other words, of the total heat energy of gasoline, 70 to 75% is rejected (as heat) in the exhaust or consumed by the motor

Assuming the best of the gasoline world:
    (gas e/gal)1.3e8 x .3 = 3.9e6,
    (e/kwh) 3.6e6 x .81 = 2.916e6
    3.9/2.916 = 1.337,

Aside from the obvious implications, this means you'd have to buy 1.337 units of Elec. energy for every unit of Gas energy, so 13.37 cents per gallon..

.. and you thought the answer was 42...

You're right, it would be much better for state governments to spend money that ultimately goes to china instead of its own citizens. Its not like that disabled woman veteran is going to use that extra money you paid her for rent / mortgage / healthcare, or pay taxes on it, that will keep it in the state.

The state would be much better supported by some rich Chinese ultimately using the money on pangolin-scale soup, spreading the wealth to poachers who are just scratching by in Africa.

What? The emphasis was placed on this sentence:

After this election, there is a very good chance that we'll have a president who does NOT hail from a family of either wealth or privilege or both; he'll be a Harvard-educated, self-made minority millionaire.

I think that is hardly superficial. You can have all the ideology you want, but as a person, you cannot really change all that much, all that fast.

The article (2 days ago?) was, like I referenced, about people who thought that google as a company wasn't mature enough to compete at the level that they're attempting to.. that is, on all fronts at once

however, I believe that isn't the point. I believe that thrillseeker hit the nail on the head when he observed, they want to keep their active-minded people active-minded! And here's why I'd say this is a good plan

    [rant]
Innovation is the key to the internet. The next coolest thing. This is evidenced by the adjective viral becoming a positive thing.

Google is an internet company, based on the internet, and though search is important, their ads are on webpages, forums, youtube, book previews, etc. - a ton of stuff. Their bread and butter is the internet. So, while 20% time in a company like Microsoft would mean 20% freedom, in Google, it's like 20% R&D. Things usually end up under the GOOGLE BETA sign, and even if they lose some stuff (and eventually have to buy it back), they know whats hot, and in business, knowing whats hot means making serious money.

The 20% deal they have with their employees is awesome. They may not always be dynamite, but they always stir things up. Good or bad, they get a large amount of feedback and new ideas every time they pull as stunt like this, and that's gotta be invaluable to the company - and (probably) really fun for the girl behind GooSIMS.
