to press their finger against a piece of sellotape.
And with an inkjet printer and blank check paper, you can commit bank fraud. How is the fact that you CAN cheat relevant?
At literally every hourly job I have ever held in my life, people "clocking in" to cover for friends has been a huge problem. Its outright theft from the employer, yet people that would never steal physical property, will cheat a time clock without thinking twice.
As long as you are assured that your privacy is protected...this is a huge non-issue. Fingerprint scanners are the best (In terms of ease of implementation) way to prevent people from clocking in and out for each other, even though they are obviously easily defeated by anyone sufficiently motivated.
Assuming your last comment wasn't a rhetorical question, you already know the answer to this: Because the perceived value-add of selling an encrypted drive allows them to charge more than simply bundling TrueCrypt with a bog-standard USB drive. The public justification would be that their software is easier to use (and, if they're feeling particularly full of themselves, more secure).
But with a minimal amount of work they could simply take the source, rename it and give it a pretty interface, and never have problems like this?
I haven't bought a new machine from BestBuy in years, but even then it was a machine to install Linux on. They tried a variety of upsells on me, and couldn't quite grasp my answer. "No, I'm wiping out everything and putting Linux on".
At another store, they were very insistent on selling me an antivirus suite. I asked "So, does it run under Linux". Their answer was "Oh, I'm sure it does." I had them spinning for about 10 minutes and finally broke the bad news to them. Come on, you're selling computers. You should have a clue what Linux is, even if it's just enough to know, a Linux person wouldn't want anything packaged for Windows.
Okay, so basically youre a smug linux user that feels a constant need to rub your level of competence in computers in the face of other people?
Cigarettes are the currency of choice in most prisons... in a non-smoking system, what do they use? Or do I not want to know...
pouches of premium brand tuna fish appear to have become the most popular item of currency, because its a stable food item that will last forever with a relatively high per-pack price.
Just DONT accept the 4.2 update when the Wii asks if you would like to upgrade. Simple as that. Unlike the XBox 360 / PS3 they have no way to "force" you to take the update.
Washington keeps an eye on its borders because neither Oregon nor Montana have sales taxes. I've seen roving police patrols stopping motorists coming in who have what looks to be a vehicle full of new consumer goodies.
I call complete bullshit on this, even with $20,000 worth of merchandise, we are talking only $1300 with a 6.5% tax rate. you cant just pull someone over for buying merchandise in another state, especially since what youre SUPPOSED to do is just claim the merch on your state tax return.......what if you happened to like the sales staff better at a certain store?
In what way will this provide _ANY_ benefit to legitimate users?
More music sellers will be willing to provide music through such a system, making the available amount of music larger as a whole. (Kinda like how the vast majority of legitimate paying mobile application developers have flocked to the iphone, where the largest successful DRM implementation is)
I'm not saying I at all agree with this plan, i'm simply answering your question.
I'm fine with your proposal as long as all of the supporters of free drug use are forced to live in the druggie parts of town.
This is the kind of ignorance that leads to years of problems with backwards social policy, because it presumes that drug use isn't widespread throughout ALL social groups and classes. (read: If you knew the reality of the situation, every neighborhood would be "the druggie part of town")
Except he wasn't using a hacked and modded console, he was SELLING them, a LOT of them. No matter how you look at it, even if you agree that you hacking a console yourself should be legal, reselling consoles that are basically being designed to pay illegally copied games rather than imports is NOT ok.
Then tell me, would you feel differently if people were simply bringing their already purchased consoles to him and he was making after-market modifications to them and simply charging a parts and labor fee? (Rather than reselling modded consoles)
The greatest arcade sports game in history, this game is begging to be remade for xbox live, the simplistic game mechanics yet deep skill still holds up to this day.
After reading this post, I read the wikipedia article on New Balance and it absolutely sickened me how clearly astroturfed the article had been to make the average person skimming it think that they manufacture anything close to a majority of their products in the USA.
An example - New Balance is one of several shoe companies that makes some of their products in the United States. Co-op America states in the New Balance Responsible Shopper company information page that around one quarter of NB's shoes are made in the United States[2]. New Balance owns five factories in the United States: two in Massachusetts (Boston and Lawrence), and three in Maine (Norridgewock, Skowhegan, and Norway). [3]
In 1994, New Balance manufactured 70% of its shoes in the United States.[4]
Is that REALLY the most recent numbers they could find? Or just the most recent ones that look favorable to investors?
When you design games completely open ended and based on the keyboard for RTS games, more often than not it becomes a game of who can master the controls, not who can actually master the game itself. (If you disagree, find me someone over the age of 40 that can play a clickfest game like starcraft well)
that said, they are requiring that you get the premium subscription to the XNA creators network ($100 per year) according the link.
Whats your point? There has to be SOME barrier to entry. (and the $100 cost to produce iphone apps hasn't even come close to stopping the flood of garbage)
no it didnt generate ANY revenue. thats the whole point, that they wont pay for fake clicks. why do you think that it FINALLY happened when in reality nothing really had changed?
since it's universally agreed upon that users / admins had plenty of time to patch the systems before conflicker hit, does this mean I should include the cost of water damage to my possessions when I leave my windows open during a hurricane that I knew was coming?
I was the best in my group of contractors and my boss was shocked and dismayed when word came down to lay me off, too.
A lot of delusional people think that they are the best at what they do too, and are absolutely shocked when they get laid off. (As well as their sympathetic boss!)
MS realizes that to continue to succeed it will have to charge a different OEM price for "netbooks" and "laptops" otherwise they will be eaten alive based on price.
Because of this, a standard must be set, otherwise you will have a hardware manufacturer attempting to pay the "netbook" price for windows in order to undercut everyone else even though the computer has a 2ghz dual core, etc.
sufficiently motivated.

My bullshit detector went off right where you said that it goes up even moreso if you are over 55 and have multiple credit cards.
Advantages of web based forums:
Any idiot can figure them out and navigate them pretty easily, whereas Usenet is more than a little intimidating to new users.
Google "liquidity" and you'll realize why having it is such an important thing. (and why gambling day traders provide it)

Why don't they just include a notecard in the box suggesting monoprice for all their users HDMI and Component cabling needs?
For the exact same reason Apple doesn't include a link to Crucial for people that buy MacBooks that want to buy RAM upgrades?

And then, do you know what the "T" in "TCO" means? Exactly: that even idiocy must enter the equation.
This is actually incredibly insightful, I never really thought of it this way.

I think science has just passed the point where laymen can be expected to absorb all of it.
Being unable to understand the underlying science is what makes him a layman in the first place.
