Well, why do you think they had a name change? For starters, the name Maroon5 is a lot less dorky than Kara's Flowers! The latter makes me think they're a hippy singalong folk group, or a group of girls on acoustic guitar, ala The Indigo Girls. The latter name actually means something, whereas when you first heard "Maroon5" - you'd have less preconceptions of what they'd be.
From what I understand one of their more recent hits was recorded because the music industry thought it would be cool for them to do something "popish".
But that's how a lot of bands get a break into the market - start with something that people know or are comfortable with, then get them to check out your other stuff. It's no surprise that a lot of acts have cover versions as the first single. (Quite likely they didn't choose it, the record company did)
You can have all the integrity coming out of your rear, but if you never get any chance to be heard via mass media - more of a problem now than ever before - then you might as well just stay in the garage.
Damn right. How many DVD packages have you seen that have TWO versions of the movie - the "director's cut" and the "lobotomised by the industry so we get a happy ending" version.
I wish they'd come out with DVDs that allow you to traverse the movie in two ways - the "cinema version" and then the "director's cut".
Outlook 2003 blocks images in received email, but when you forward the message, it then decides that it just *has* to download the image before you can forward it. Yet another case of good, but not good enough.
And why would IBM get this deeply involved with Apple, when they're just in the process of flogging off their PC business, in order to focus on their big iron and services? It's not as if the people who used to buy Thinkpads are gonna start buying Powerbooks if IBM are selling em.
Could someone explain to me how "Bow-chika-WOW-wow" - which I presume is how you spell out a funky, wah-wah groove - has become inextricably linked to PORN??
The only thing that comes to mind when I think of "things that go Wah-wah" is Isaac Hayes' "Theme from Shaft".
So which movies started the whole Wah association with porn? The only music I hear whenever I come across these things (on someone else's hard drive, of course!) is cheesy, 80s sounding crap, complete with big thundering drum sounds and annoying electric guitar riffs...
The moment someone gets >= 51% of the primary vote, they've won, game over. Preferences are still tallied, but not used.
If the candiate you disliked the most (eg Liberal) got up on primaries, it wouldn't have made any difference if you had directed your 1st vote to the runner-up (eg. ALP), instead of a minor party, would it?
As I said, directing it to the minor party means the ALP gets less primary votes, helping the Liberals win. If the race is close, the primary votes *might* make a difference. However, in safe Labour or Liberal voting areas, you can direct your primary vote to whichever minor party you fancy, secure in the knowledge it won't do you any good!
The way things are in Aust politics right now, the name of the game is to get the Libs out, which means voting for the only other party that's got a chance of winning.:(
That's how I used to vote too, but then I learned that that preferences only come into play when none of the parties in contention are able to get >=51% of the vote.
If you vote for the minor parties, and give only 2nd or lower preference to Labour, it's possible that Labour will lose simply because they didn't get enough of the first-preference votes.
If the Liberal party (they're called Liberal, but really should be "wannabe-Republicans") get 51% of the vote, then it's all over, they win. More info at the Aust Electoral Commission site - http://www.aec.gov.au/_content/what/voting/votes_c ount.htm
Actually, women have a greater presence in upper management in the Philippines than in more developed economies like Australia. (I'm from the Phils. but now live in Oz)
The Philippines is an economic basketcase not because of sexual discrimination in workplaces but because of **much** bigger reasons. Corruption would be near the top of the list. The Philippines holds the dubious honour of having two entries in the top 10 most corrupt leaders in recent history - http://au.news.yahoo.com/040325/19/oa9p.html.
Then good ole political instability would also be there - president pissing you off? march in the streets and get rid of the f*cker directly! or stage a coup attempt, if you're from the military. Underdeveloped or non-existent local industries, crippling foreign debt... oh, the list can go on for days!:)

YES, there *is* a distinction between "arrested" and "detained" in the Philippines.
as an aside:
in the philippines, being "detained" can sometimes be worse than being "arrested"
if you're "arrested", it usually means there is a record kept somewhere that they *did* have you in their custody.
"detained" or "invited" may mean the authorities can go, "we only talked to him but we let him go, and we're not responsible anymore for what happened afterwards" (ie, they "disappear" your sorry ass...)
of course, being such a world-renowned case, there's too many observers watching what happens here, so they probably won't get "disappeared", unlike what they used (?) to do with trade union organisers or activists

okay, on another note:
is there any change that's going to come out of this - whether in the behaviour of users or in Microsoft "security" schemes?? given the fact that most users are too gullible and unwary, and are likely to click on ANYTHING that is clickable, what is to prevent this kind of incident from happening again? Microsoft will probably refuse to do anything ("hey, VBScript actually makes your life *better*!") unless they get hauled over the coals in court.
And don't forget that pastry called the Danish! Of course that's from Denmark. :)
