Though you may not realize it, some people lead more active, more hazardous lives than you.
Factory workers, construction workers, hands-on engineers, mechanics, even laboratory workers may work in places that place their phones in danger. If it falls out of their pocket and down three stories or into a vat of lye or under the treads of a cement truck or out of the window of a speeding car, they know its safe.
Personally, I'm a code monkey and so long as my phone can survive my footprint (I once stepped on mine after leaving my pants on the floor of the bathroom), I'm okay with it. Other people, maybe want something more durable.
Just because _you_ don't want it doesn't mean no one wants it.
He basically said: "In order to colonize Mars, we will need to use Technology that doesn't exist yet but I bet that it'll probably be kind of like this."
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm not sure how this is newsworthy, since it's completely idle speculation.
How is this any different than recycling ink toner cartridges and printer parts?
As far as I know, the Government doesn't tax manufacturers for every Toner Cartridge they make.
it doesn't change the fact that $35 DVD players are pieces of shit.
That's because you're paying $35 for something that is worth far more than that. You want one that won't break after a few years? Shell out more money. You expect your.50c Wal-Mart Lighter to last as long as a Zippo? You expect your $10 Wal-Mart watch to last as long as a rolex? You expect your $15 Wal-Mart Power Drill to last as long as a Craftsman? No, of course not. Cheap shit breaks because it was made cheaply. That's _why_ it's cheap.
Yes actually there's a lot of shit that is specifically designed to suck ass.
No. It's made to be cheap, not to fall apart. Falling apart is just a side effect. You make it sound like the guys building $200 Wal-Mart computers are just doing it so that it will break, you'll have to buy another one, and throw the old one into a landfill and poison the Earth. Well, stop watching Captain Planet, because that's not the way people really are. You want something to "Not suck," you gotta pay for it.
This is the same argument used by asbestos manufacturers years ago.
You'll have to refresh my memory: How is this _anything_ like asbestos?
Asbestos is outright harmful to individuals. Therefore, you are no longer allowed to distribute it, anymore than you are allowed to distribute Cyanide Poison Cupcakes.
Unless you are saying that electronics manufacturers should not be allowed to distribute electronics because they are harmful to their users, I'm not quite sure what your point is.
Besides, it's not like Asbestos Manufacturers were required to pay an "Asbestos Tax" to help pay for asbestos clean-up.
I've still got a Commodore 64, an NES, an atari, a working cellphone from 2004, a working cellphone from 2006, plenty of old USB keys, several old MP3 players (256mb, 1gig) and countless still-working computer parts built up over the ages, dating back to the mid-90s.
In fact, with the exception of a couple of laptop Harddrives, I can't recall the last piece of technology that simply broke or died on me.
Gotta love Slashdot... someone makes an honest, intelligent point that goes against the Green/Liberal/Anti-Government/Anti-Corporation mindset and they're instantly modded FLAMEBAIT.
Please, he makes a good point: Why should manufacturers be charged for materials that they have given up all rights and ownership to?
So if a person refuses to recycle something, it's somehow the manufacturer's fault? How is the manufacturer supposed to know or control whether the consumer lets their product rot on a shelf for 10 years or throw it into a river two days later?
By charging the manufacturer for how the consumer disposes of their product, you are now granting them the _responsibility_ to take charge of how the consumer disposes of it, which is nearly impossible to enforce with Orwellian-style RFID tags in every product.
What exactly are any of you suggesting that the manufacturers do different, or is this just a way to milk some more easy money from those 'fat corporate pigs?'
But don't let the truth stop you from being a retardedly hateful and paranoid of "THE MAN," thinking you're the only intelligent guy in America, even though 70% of the populace feels exactly the same way you do.
He waived his rights when he bought the ticket and (also assuming) he read and understood the fine print.
If you want to come on my property or utilize my services, I can have you comply to almost anything... including telling you to shut up and strip naked. Don't like it? You're free to leave.
A girl in my dormitory dropped her computer and destroyed her hard drive. Being the CS guru that I am, I assured her I could fix it... sans harddrive. She had already sent the Harddrive back to the manufacturer. There was now a gaping hole in the bottom of her laptop where her harddrive used to be. I told her I could STILL get it to work.
"But there's no harddrive!"
"Don't worry, I can fix it."
So I take her USB drive, load DAMN SMALL LINUX on it, plug it into her computer, and voila! You should have seen the look on her face when I booted up Mozilla and had Facebook running on a computer without a harddrive.
The media likes to portray us geeks as sorcerers, and sometimes, you can see why.
She's back on the internet, she's got webmail, she's got facebook, she's got text editors, she's got practically everything she needs for school. (Naturally, I ask her if she's doing anything later, and of course she's 'busy.' Oh well.)
There was an article a while back surmising that the downturn in the American Economy would cause more Linux adoption.
I imagine that is partially the case, but I bet it's also because the Windows folks are currently in No-Man's Land. They've stopped selling/supporting XP, some people are too afraid or unwilling to switch to Vista (I'm one of them), and Windows 7 is still at least months away. With all of these factors, some are seeing it as the perfect time to take the plunge.
Yes, but do you leave the basement?

62.5 days of battery life?! Is this for real!?
What kind of battery are they using?

If I have a tree on my property and it falls in your yard, I have to pay for disposal.
A more proper analogy would be: A man buys a tree from you, plants it in his yard, cuts it down, and then charges you to clean it up.
If I'm burning leaves in my yard and catch your house on fire, I'm on the hook.
A more proper analogy would be: I buy leaves from you, accidentally burn my neighbor's house down, but now you're responsible.
Making companies pay for their waste is one thing. Making them pay for the waste of an individual too lazy to recycle is something else entirely.
Bullshit.

It's a setting in your OS, dude, not in FF. Like most programs, FF just implements the existing PRINT framework.
OMG THE GOVERNMENT IS EVIL!!
More NY police are shot and killed on the job each year than there are perpetrators killed by cops.

My girlfriends mother bought a laptop about two years ago.
Who do you think you're fooling with this?

I wish there was a "-1, Idiot" mod.
You make a perfectly obvious, rational point... and get modded Troll.
God, I love Slashdot's DoubleThink.
Agreed. As a site developer, I will SWEAR by Firebug.

...
TREBEK: I'm sorry, that's "Japan US Relations." That's just awful and you know it.
I RTFA, but can someone more well-versed in Physics explain what sort of implications this has?
Does it validate some kind of Quantum Mechanics theory?
Does it have any practical application, either now or in the distant future?
By who's observation?
Don't the actual passengers get there in a few hours, their own time, or something crazy like that?
I have.
Apparently, the power plant would be completed in 2020, have an expected output of 1600 megawatts, last for 50 years, and cost only $28 Million.
Personally, I think that while our Coal Plants are dirty, they should last well up until 2050, when Fusion Power is expected to showcase.
Interesting.
:)
You're the only poster to provide conclusive evidence to toss out my claim.
I concede the point... and you ought to be modded up.
