What you are overlooking is support. They are probably saying it will only run on Windows machines because if you have a problem with their program (or web interface) running under a different operating system, they will be useless to help you.
This is done all the time, and should not be too surprising to you.
If you were worried, I would assume you could rig up some sort of device to record your voice digitally which could then be encrypted if you wished, then change it into an analog signal which would be transmitted over the cellphone. Then the receiver could have a device to recieve the analog signal to decrypt it.
Oh wait, they already invented modems. Damn, I'm always late with these ideas.
We need a slashdot poll asking whether or not you think the guy that wrote the parent to this reply would win or lose in court based on the fact that he wants to represent himself in court if sued.
No, seriously. This is like interviewing Anna Nicole Smith. She got famous from showing her tits, and now all of the sudden we're supposed to be interested in her message?
Being a reseller and having RMA'd (returned for replacement) hundreds and hundreds of hard disks from companies like Maxtor, Western Digital, IBM, Seagate, and Fujitsu-- I can say with great certainty that they all operate that way.
Your best bet if you have a drive die on you is to RMA the bad drive, buy a new one to replace it. When you get the old drive back from RMA, sell it on ebay as a refurb. Someone will buy it.
There are so many jobs out there it isn't funny. I think the problem is this..
When you get laid off, don't expect to get the exact same job you had at another company. Don't cubbyhole yourself into one job title, or even one field. Chances are you won't find the exact same job, and you'll be sitting at home reading slashdot like this fool--when you should be hitting the streets with a newspaper in one hand and your briefcase (purse?) in the other.
Yes, I too got laid off 2 weeks ago. In Raleigh, NC--where it's just as bad as anywhere else lately. As the average unemployment rate goes down, here it's still increasing. I'm not the model A+ worker (I do my best) and I had zero problems finding a job within 2 weeks at a 4% increase in salary in the IT field. The jobs are out there people!
This guy has a kid, and a wife working part time, and he's looking for ways to slack off? Umm.. Hello?
So you stealing music gives the artists more money? I don't see the logic there.
You don't buy CD's because they want to make it so can't play CD's you buy on your PC. So you steal CD's now. So why are you pissed, you don't buy CD's anymore anyway! (HEY! I can't play what I don't buy anyways!) You've lost your reason for argument.
I know I'll get modded up for being repetative, but oh well.. If the trends continue, bands like Fleetwood Mac will never have survived past 'Rumours'.
There is a class-action suit in progress for people that have paid the "extortion" fee.
I tried looking for the link, but recently the keywords, "directv class-action" are very popular.
Also you can listen to it legally whether the station you are listening to is legal or not.. They are the ones that have to pay the royalties.
It's a good option if your workplace doesn't allow hordes of MP3's on their workstations.
How on earth is BitTorrent anything like a Denial of Service attack?
Nah, he obviously just saved money on car insurance by switching to Geico.

Maybe so. But I don't really care how well my taxi-cab driver can speak. I just wish he'd use some fucking deodorant.
Yea, but the flaming lesbian carpet-munchers ruined all that in the 90's.

Dude, I am SO running down this thing backwards!
(Chugs another beer)
I foresee BitTorrent as being the next Slashdot craze. (See: Beowulf, Natalie Portman. . .)
"Hey! This article is great! Imagine how BitTorrent would help it!"
But I'll keep my error checking, thanks.
Either you haven't heard of spyware or you are joking.
Who gives a shit?

Welcome to the real world.

Yea, uh.. welcome to Slashdot. Hope you enjoyed your beer. :-)
E-frigging-gads! EGADS I say!
My god get me a rag my eyes are bleeding!

It's one company in France. I doubt the entire country pitched in.
I buy a car. It has defective seatbelts. Ford recalls the car, but I don't take mine in to get it fixed.
6 months later, can I sue them if the seatbelt fails?
Interesting how the lawyers will field this one. It will probably come down to how accessable Microsoft makes it's patches.

Actually, genius (ahem), they charge royalties on ENCODERS and not PLAYERS.
It's not very interesting. ^_^
A tad 'sad', combined with a little 'why'.
Succeed in explaining SMTP to the average AOL
user and you sir, are a much nobler man than I.
Yea uh.. Hi. This is Steve Case.. Well, we're
doing some things with our SMTP filtering
technology... (10 million AOL users fall asleep)
