Well, yeah, disturbing. But remember that Mensa members are a subset of that actual 98+ percentile -- they are at least "ones that would care to join Mensa". We, here on this discussion, have no idea as to what percent of the 98+ percentile actually joins and is active in the organization. Maybe the ones that get off on doing slick monthly newsletters happen to be Rabid Bushites. Not only is it not fair to condemn an organization like this, but it is illogical to draw such conclusions about the "supposedly best and brightest". They are at least a subset of the "best and brightest" but this subset may also be wacko loafers for all we know, and 98% of that 98 percentile may not have even bothered to join, and are active in The World in what you might consider intelligent activities, (DNC, etc).
Why doesn't the iPod support WMA, when WMA decoding is built into the technology Apple uses in the iPod?
Well the answer to this is obvious -- they wanted to stick it up Gates/Microsoft's ass, all UP IN they ass, that's why. Becaue they don't have to, that's why. They wanted to favor their own efforts at music downloads/sales, that's why. Why doesn't Microsoft include QuickTime, RealPlayer on Windows installs? Because apparently they don't have to include shit they don't want to, either, and it doesn't do their own efforts any favors, so they don't. There is no fucking reason why Apple should support WMA, moral, legal, or business. One might make a case for any of them, but it would be thin. Right now, they are riding this motherfucker for all its worth, and they will only "open up" when it is in their self-perceived best business interest. Why the fuck doesn't Real make their won goddamn shitware store work on Macs? And then bitch about Apple not playing Real's downloads on iPods. Gimme a fuckin break. yeah, Apple are so fucking evil, they don't support WMA. Boo fuckin hoo. jeezusfuckinchrist-on-a-crutch, man.
They have a LONG way to go to becoming Microsoft. Some of the things done may look, sound, be the same, but c'mon -- like Apple's market pressure is ANYthing like that of Microsoft's. Please.
I always think of "Parts is parts!". The idea being not so much to Link and Object that was a whole entire freeking application (Excel) into a document that was currently open and being edited or viewed in another giant (proprietary) fat-ass application, but rather to link actual small, almost unitary objects in a document-centric environment. The document is the focus and not the application that is working on the document. I'm reminded of nanites working on a document, all doing their respective specialties. In a sense there IS no application. ("There is no spoon.") Just the document and some spelling part handles that function and some image part handles that and some language part handles that and, well, and so on. Anyway, I always think of Parts is Parts. I still have the OpenDoc CDs, but didn't work with it that much.
"I would like to see a site completely dedicated to mapping out the timeline and the "features" that make up their software in an effort to demonstrate where their "innovations" actually come from (other innovative people), the answer is simple, they are masters at swallowing up innovation by others and integrating it into their flagship packages."
It's not completely dedicated to the topic, but here's a good start at that :
"Basically it is meant to enable PHBs to replace Unix servers with cheap Dell boxes running Windows admined by MCSEs."
O GOD PLEASE NO! MOD THIS DOWN TO ***HELL*** !!!!!!!! I can't let any of our "IT Directors" see this -- it will give them ideas. Oh, wait, they won't be on this/. anyway. Nevermind. Please drive through. Sorry for the interruption. Please continue....
Oh, now, THAT was good. Bravo. Thank you. Seriously. Well, not like "SERIOUSLY seriously",...I mean, it was funny, but I mean like, you know, I was being serious. Well, sort of serious, I mean....BANG!!!!!.....
What we need is some truly old school punishment for these scum. Especially for recidivist spammer slime. I'd add:
1. Public flogging
2. Draw and quarter
3. The Rack
4. Impalement
5. Pillory
My all time favorite so far is someone, in another state mind you, calls me and tells me they created this file on their comptuer but can't find it. ????!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, you want I should find your keys, too?? Geez. It's not even my job -- I'm a developer on separate apps, but they have my number. So I walk them through, "Go to Start->Search for Files...." and so on. She didn't know what she named the file.... >:-(
This is going to have no "Real" results that make a difference. You have to have the right combination of factors and sustain it for a very long time : company management with a backbone, judges with a clue, companies with the bucks to take it on, lawyers with understanding of technology, judges with sufficient understanding of technology. None of these actions, (EU, et al), will make any real, sustainable difference so long as MS has the mindset it does. Nothing short of fining them $50 billion, putting execs behind bars, seizing personal assets, things so seemingly draconian that they will never be mentioned, much less carried out. Nothing else will get their attention and make them change. The choice given them has to be "cut the crap, or we cut off yer other nut", and said while the clippers remain in position for here on out, and the hand on the On button is that of their worst enemies, so they have no doubt that if they mess around they are done for. They are complete, unrepentent, shameless, honorless recidivists. So this suit by Real is cute and all, but it ain't gonna do much more than give folks something to read for a few months, and keep some attorneys and legal staff employed.
