As an environmentalist, I have always supported nuclear power. However, to suggest that global warming isn't taking place or that it is another "crackpot" idea of the environmentalist movement is simply flat out wrong.
The people who were leading the anti-nuclear movement thirty years ago were not leading scientists and they did not have the equivelent access to information that we do now.
I do not force my views about electrical engineering or molecular physics on everyone, having never stuided these things. Why does everyone feel compelled to contribute to the environmental debate when very, very few have studed environmental science?
Wow, several posts seem to indicate that NNTP is being throttled now. What total fucking pricks... does your ISP offer "unlimited downloads"? My ISP, for example, offers 100 GB per month (up/down). Since NNTP uses minimal upstream, I would be really goddamn pissed if they started to throttle downstream of NNTP.
I hope most Slashdot readers are using NNTP by now (not NTP) to use their music, movies, software, pr0n, etc. etc.
You will help out your ISP by only using downstream bandwidth. You can also usually max-out your connection speed. A CD can take only 15-20 minutes to download.
Further, your troubles with the RIAA/MPAA/Homeland Security are likely to be limited to when you, say, post on a heavily visited site about your activity but forget to post anonymously.
For the best binary newsreader (to download files) from USENET, I reccomend Power Grab -- small, fast, free, and doesn't fiddle around with your registry.
You will probably need to subscribe to a USENET service as well; I reccomend easynews or if you plan to download more than 20 GB per month than Giganews.
Yes. Because the internet is "the final frontier"... I can walk over to my computer and in two seconds, I can check my "myspace" profile. (If I had one, that is.) The other things you mentioned had access fees, dial up times, etc.
IMO:
Best place to get info from experts on a specialized topic is still usenet, whether you post regularly to their group or not.
Best place to get very specific info on any topic from WWII to Wrestlemania is Wikipedia.
I am almost confident that, believe it or not, Laserdisc predates VHS. In any event, it was not, IMHO, widely adpoted. (i.e. I didn't have one:-)... neither did anyone except techno/cinemaphiles ) Also -- don't forget it was an analog format, not digital.
Neither of these formats will be accepted as easily as, historically, other formats have.
1. Cassetes --> CDs: CDs are thinner and higher quality that does not degrade. Even still, it took *almost* 10 years before cassetes were completely and fully replaced. Even to this day, unless you count, say, iTunes, CDs reign supreme and music on DVD is still a joke.
2. ?? --> Beta/VHS: No fromat existed for viewing movies at home... except maybe an 8mm projector!! But I can't remember video stores that had 8mm rentals... is it just me?
3. VHS --> DVD: DVD is smaller, thinner, and holds more at a better quality. Plus, like every previous post has pointed out, many people have invested in buying DVDs and, like me, see no reason to "upgrade" the quality of their movies... for... $30+??
As someone who never thought he would need to dial 911, let me tell you that one day, when you find yourself or a loved one in a life or death situation, you will regret saving $12.00 a month on long distance for the past few years...
Now that all the phones in our house are VOIP, we no longer have access to 911 services. Unfortunately this was not my choice. As for anyone who is considering moving to completely VOIP, wouldn't you pay $12.00 a month extra to be able to access emergency services??
What $8 bln CDN/yr wireless market? I live in Canada and there aren't any public wireless providers that I've heard of, though Bell/Rogers are planning to develop one. Do they mean like, cell phones? Or selling wireless routers?
The hassle of invoicing your neighbours and collecting payments really isn't worth it... I'm sure openwrt is great but it still takes a third party to do that:-)
I seriously doubt, given that I have a 100 GB bandwidth cap, that I would ever let my neighbours use my wireless (even if they paid... unless it were per MB) and I definately wouldn't let them use it for free. Call me cheap.
I just found, during a firmware upgrade for my Linksys Wireless G VPN Router, that there is a new feature built in which allows you to configure your access point to use a paid, third party service through "Boingo" (dunno what that is, don't want to spend the 2 seconds it will take to find out) to charge for your access.
Yes, folks, the Linksys router you bought can now be configured with one of those "Welcome" screens just like at McDonald's, so you can welcome your neighbours to your wireless access point and start charging them by the hour to pay your monthly broadband bills!
Upgrade your firmware today and start making $$$ from your home!
I agree with most of what you have said, but unlike video games, Apple does not license anything that can make them a huge profit. This is why [[Video Came Console]] is sold at a loss... the company expects to make up big time in the rights for games.
To Apple's credit, other than MS Office, there hasn't been a single piece of software that I've **HAD** to buy for my Mac, -- at least give them credit for giving the consumer a practically all-in-one package.
A laptop with a fans in it? I've never heard of that before. I don't think my iBook G4 has any fans. In fact I didn't even know that the iMac G5 or the current iMacs had any fans. Or the Mac Minis...?
Now that I think about it... you're right!! I have spontanously switched sides.
The fact that debate on Slashdot has not evloved seems to be evidence for ID... unless some otherworldly puppetmaster father-figure intervenes, then we will perpetually live in darkness and front page stories about evolution will be posted day after day with first posts that can be summarized as: "Then why don't monkeys evolve today? why did they suddenly stop evolving!11!!?? do you think your uncle is a monkey???"
How many MP3s did you download from Limewire (or the Apple Store, for that matter)... or even ripped from your own CD collection with losseless quality... have 5.1 channels of sound?
In Canada we have a national voting system. Voting is the same wherever you go, no matter what part of the country you are in. Each person writes a little X on a piece of paper next to the cantidate of his choice, then you put it in a box. There are serial numbers on the ballots, so if any ballots are missing, duplicated, or anything else is funny, there is a way to tell. (Not tracable, though, -- ie you can't tell who voted for whom.)
There are no computers in national elections and there is a paper trail that can be recounted as many times as anyone wishes. And results don't take weeks to come in either... or months for that matter. We always seem to have our Prime Minister and government chosen within a few hours after the polls have closed...

Windows media.
IMHO, that is a drawback. I have had more trouble with the Flash based players than sites that simply embed video links in the code.
What OS are you having problems with? OSX, Linux, and Windows XP all work for me.
Damn!
This
Will be
Tough for the
Mods, if they count all
the syllables in every post!
Wow!
That
Really
Backfired!
You got modded down
for a simple mistake! Whoopsies!
Some
troll
you are.
First posting
is such a bad thing
But, I will say, yours was funny.
If a computer tells you to jump off a cliff, would you do it?
Yes. Because the internet is "the final frontier" ... I can walk over to my computer and in two seconds, I can check my "myspace" profile. (If I had one, that is.) The other things you mentioned had access fees, dial up times, etc.

Happy valentine's day!

Actually the correct 911 definition of an "emergency" is:
1. Crime in progress or
2. Life or death situation

Currently the "tags" that I see on the mainpage read:
