On the upside, product placement can provide support for good, but ratings-deprived series.

The Office is a prime example--I'm convinced NBC sticks by it not because of critical acclaim, but because of the way it awesomely does product placement in huge, obvious ways.

There have been two complete episodes invaded by Chili's, including a hysterical sendup of a Chili's manager ("We do not tolerate excessive drinking. That patron is no longer welcome.")

The iPod placement was more goofy, but definitely fit the storyline (Secret Santa with inappropriate gifts).

I've also recognized Sun Chips as an important plot point ;)

Unfortunately, the analogy is false. IT doesn't kill or save enough people, so there's no rigorous screening process for people entering the field. There is no 7-8 years of proving ground and education before being released upon the masses.

The fact is that kids out of HS and smart people all around the world are picking up IT like loose change.

Here's some real advice for the original poster: Some of the hottest IT jobs right now are probably...tada, health-related industries. Look around what you do RIGHT NOW and look at what things could be done better and more efficiently using computers. Develop some software to do so and you can make a mint. Hundreds of successful startups do just that--recognize an inefficiency in the medical system and fill a specific niche. If you want to break into the industry, no need to learn all the coding yourself--just find some smart coders, show them the inefficiency and give them some ideas how to fix it, spread around a little seed money and voila, you're a mogul.

This reminds me of the advice another ten year consultant gave me--no matter if you're busy or not, always claim that you're doing more work at home or at the hotel. He would declare almost every single night that he was working in the hotel. And we would all naively believe him. He later confided to me that he spent most of those nights in the strip club.

I firmly believe that (based on what I've seen) that mp3 sharing does hurt the industy.

Silver, check out the article. The argument isn't that downloading doesn't affect sales. The argument is that it's not a substitute for sales. The argument is that if it were really a substitute, then sales would be drastically lower and not just an economy-affected 10%.

The article says the likelihood is that downloading is a new type of distribution which does not replace the old methods (yet). Leib makes the oft-used idea that the music industry should be looking for ways of profiting from this new method instead of trying to suppress it. Leib admits that he thought "a priori" (ie, before examining the evidence) that sharing hurts--but the sales data doesn't back it up.

That said, here's one of the most salient points from the article:

In order for downloading to really have an impact on CD sales, it needs to be a substitute for CDs. If file sharing is not a good substitute, then you can download all you want and it may be a new form of listening but it may not hurt CD sales.

The rest of the article is filled with a lot of duh moments (DMCA bad? really? Record companies should try to figure out new revenue streams instead of trying to supress piracy? get out of town!).
