(from Jesus Camp) MOM: (reading from "Exploring Creationism with Physical Science") One popular thing to do in American Politics is to note that the summers in the United States over the past few years have been very warm. As a result, global warming must be real. What's wrong with this reasoning?
KID: It's only gone up 0.6 degrees.
MOM: Yeah, it's not really a big problem, is it?
KID: No. I don't think that... it's going to hurt us.
MOM: It's a huge political issue, global warming is, and that's why it's really important for you to understand...
KID: Is evolution too?
MOM: Um, not really. On a much...
KID: Creationism?
MOM: Um, it's becoming one now. What if you had to go to school where the teacher said, "Creationism is stupid, and you're stupid if you believe in it?"
KID: I think they should...
MOM: Well, or what if you had to go to a school where the teacher said "Evolution is stupid, and you're stupid if you believe it?"
KID: I wouldn't mind that.
MOM: You wouldn't mind it. If you look at Creationism, it's the only possible answer to all the questions. It's the only possible answer.
KID: That's exactly what dad said!
MOM: Mmm hmmm, it's the only possible answer to all the questions.
KID: Oh, yeah...
MOM: Oh, yeah.
MOM: Did you get to the part on here where it says that science doesn't prove anything? And it's really interesting when you look at it that way.
KID: It is?
MOM: It is.
KID: (reading further) I think, personally, that Galileo made the right choice by giving up science for Christ.
(later)
MOM: We know when things started changing, you know, prayer got taken out of school, and um... the schools started falling apart. And now the rest of us are going, wait a minute, where is my country? Our firm belief is, there are two types of people, those who love Jesus and those who don't.
The linux community reversed it's announcement last week concerning the early release of 2.6. Now they have pushed back the release date by three years, and possibly four depending on "how awesome the Blood Elf race is."
When widespread customer outcry is "chatter," you're losing sight of what your role is as a company. Has anyone reminded Sony that the source of this "chatter" is also where they get their income?
The Clinton Administration tried to reduce tension by getting some reactors sent to North Korea, and Rumsfeld was on the board of the company that sold reactors to North Korea (ABB). Not too long after, North Korea was part of the axis of evil. This is equivilent to shop-owner selling a gun to someone, joining the police, and then complaining about the criminal they sold the gun to. I guess when you lack any sort of moral integrity, the only important fact is whose signature is on your paycheck.
"I hope this will not require military action, but it may. And military conflict could be difficult. An Iraqi regime faced with its own demise may attempt cruel and desperate measures. If Saddam Hussein orders such measures, his generals would be well advised to refuse those orders. If they do not refuse, they must understand that all war criminals will be pursued and punished. If we have to act, we will take every precaution that is possible. We will plan carefully; we will act with the full power of the United States military; we will act with allies at our side, and we will prevail." -President Bush II
"I must say you don't normally engage in conversations by threatening to intercontinental ballistic missiles." -John Bolton
Hey fellas.... How is that hard-line foreign policy working out?
Whenever I turn on the news, I always hear questions. I hear pointless speculation from anchors with no more credibility than anyone who is "able" to speak with enunciation and wear makeup, and worse, they are speaking about things that no one on earth can possibly know. Whether it's a school shooting, or a political scandal, or a celebrity arrest, the talking heads guess and guess about what the truth could be.
What happens? People make a decision based on their own biases, and then when the truth is actually known, it is written off or embraced on assumptions based on speculation based on nothing much at all.
Now, did the Bush Administration lie? Of course they did - just like all the administrations before it. Now, what did they lie about, and how important were the lies to the security and well-being of the American people? That is something we need to come to terms with as a country, but let's not speculate about it. We simply don't know. Conservatives should lay down their bias towards innocence, and liberals should lay down their bias towards guilt.
The only thing that concerns me is that the Bush Administration seems unwilling to submit to a full and thorough investigation, and no one, especially elected officials, are above criticism or criminal investigation. If the White House is unwilling to open all of their records, including all classiffied documents, to a special commission, many will simply assume guilt because they will not submit themselves to the same rules everyone else must follow.
Similarly, if America continues to display it's arrogance by flatly ignoring international law, I'm afraid we may reap what we sow when we are no longer the dominant superpower. We had moral credibility after WWII. We lost some in Vietnam, and in Grenada, then in the Iran Contra Affair, and more when we supported Hussein while he was gassing Kurds. So when the chips are down, and we are truly afraid, do we torture? Do we kill 20 civilians to kill one suspected terrorist? Do we withhold legal rights that were once so central to our belief that every man - suspected terrorist or not - is created equal, and has the right to be innocent until proven guilty?
Lawyer 131236716723: They didn't throw this guy in jail who broke some technicality against a major corporation.
Lawyer 216421934614: WHAT?

Lawyer 216421934614: Look, I know you're new here, but this is America. We've got the RIAA, MPAA, not to mention all the lobbying to be done in DC. I mean, those Native Americans don't rip themselves off, eh? Plus, we've got so many laws on the book that someone, somewhere isn't doing something right, and who gets to prosecute?
Lawyer 131236716723: Lawyers?
Lawyer 216421934614: And who gets to defend?
Lawyer 131236716723: Lawyers!
Lawyer 216421934614: And who gets to judge?

Lawyer 216421934614: And who makes the law?

Steve saw the whole world, met thousands of people, and made a positive contribution to the earth as a whole. I'm glad I got to watch it on TV. It's just like doing something!
My favorite thing about the current administration is that they believe that they CAN spread democracy by military force, and the tens of thousands that die in the process are simply collateral in the birth pains of the new middle east, while they CAN'T support federally funded stem-cell research that will save more lives than it destroys -- if you consider an unborn fetus living.
In essence, the lives and well-being of Iraqis that have already been born are worth less than "potential" American lives. I'm just wondering when condoms will be considered weapons of mass destruction for preventing the birth of thousands of sperm - each one deserves a chance! I mean, unless it's dirty Islamo-fascist foreigner sperm.
Looking on the horizon, it seems to me that early 2007 will determine the next five years of the computing industry. If Leopard is introduced on time in conjunction with an office suite (Microsoft or a truly comparable replacement) and the Adobe Suites as native applications, Microsoft is in serious trouble. Apple will have delivered on all of their promises; the industry will have supported their move in the form of third party applications, and Microsoft is going to look slow and stupid. Vista is going to suck early - there's no doubt about it. They're already talking about things they are "saving" for SP1.
When all of this happens, the other shoe will drop when business owners and business managers begin asking: Why is there no search feature on our corporate network that works like Spotlight on my kid's computer? Why is it so difficult for our marketing department to create a podcast, when my nephew can do it on his laptop in 15 minutes? Why do my wife's e-mails look better than the ones from my office? Why can't I get that spreadsheet back like I can on my computer at home? I can't video conference?! My kids do it all damn night on their computers!
Apple is trying to reach out and grab the teenage and college demographic, because no matter how smart an adult thinks they are, they never want to look stupid or "old" to their kids. If Apple can pull it off, it will be the beginning of the post-Windows era, when Microsoft's marketshare falls below 75%, the competition heats up, and software companies begin to deliver programs that actually save time and money for everyday office work.
A good product, along with good marketing and a little luck, will always do well in a saturated market. Look at the MacBooks... though I wouldn't buy one (a little overpriced and underpowered), for a college student who needs basic word processing and a shiny exterior it's a great product. It has sold despite it's high price point and the fear of not going with windows.
Imagine an iPhone, available in white and black, which is fully a touch screen device capable of multiple points of input at a time. No buttons except perhaps a scroll wheel on the side, and a switch for silent mode. Hold it in portrait and it's a phone, or an ipod, or a pda. Hold it in landscape and it's a widescreen video player or ebook reader (with a special grey contrast ratio to reduce eye strain). It has 40GB of storage with 8GB of ROM to preserve the battery. Heavy enough to feel sturdy in your hand, small enough to put in your pocket. Bluetooth, maybe WiFi....

Enjoy your stay! Tell Rupert that 580 million was SO worth it.
The problem with highways is that there are entirely too many exits and entrances. Most of the traffic we experience is due to merging errors and crashes caused by merging.
If you look at a map of any place with urban sprawl, like Atlanta, highways are the first cancerous veins that spread the disease of McMansions and thirty mile commutes. If there were far less highway entrances and exits, and someone besides complete idiots in the zoning office, the inconvenience of driving five miles to the nearest highway exit would cause more people to buy homes closer to town. Cities would then be more efficent and better served by mass transit systems. With less cars, and fewer and shorter car commutes, we'd also lessen our dependence on foreign oil. People would be forced to do more with less, so instead of having entire floors that go unused (yet still air conditioned), more efficient townhomes and apartments would be used instead.
Proper city planning will determine which civilization survives the 21st century the best. It's too bad America is doing so poorly.
Remember, the same mentality that allowed the Nazis to rise was, "It's not my problem, I don't want to lose my job, nothing to see here..." mentality. Six million people were murdered, and no one said a word.
History can repeat itself. After Adolf Hitler firebombed the Reichstag, he formed an organization that (I believe) loosely translates to "Homeland Security."
"We're getting ready to pull building 6." -NYC Head of Engineering, just before they demolish WTC6 with explosives (see video below)
There have been many other fires in predominately steel buildings, and none have collapsed, especially after one hour or even ten hours of fires. But let's pretend that all of the jet fuel made it inside both towers, and burned as hot as it can for those fifty minutes. How is it possible that every building that fell came straight down? When the second tower was hit, the plane didn't hit close to the center as the first one did. Wouldn't the concentration of jet fuel cause one side of the building to collapse and then fall over? How is it possible that all three buildings fell in nearly perfect symmetry?
We forget about the planes hitting the building because they were engineered to withstand the impact of the planes. Every document the government has released has stated that fire is the cause of the collapse of all three buildings.
First of all, he said the tapes were confiscated. If I have video of Cheney shooting someone in the face, and the FBI takes it from me, how am I supposed to release it? Secondly, the authority to shoot down aircraft was taken away from generals earlier in the summer of 2001. See the Washington Post story below about the confusion of who was authorized to shoot down planes, and notice that Cheney thought a couple had already been shot down. (Flight 93 and 77? Who knows.)
If you want to kill the conspiracy theories, you have to explain WTC7. It was over-engineered because it was the bunker for emergencies for NYC. Then you have the owner of the building, Larry Silverstein, saying that he was sorry they had to "pull" the building. (Link to video below.) Later, everyone denies that the building was pulled, and the government officially "doesn't know" why a 70 story building collapsed.
Why would they disavow pulling the building due to safety concerns? Because it takes weeks to plan the demolition of a building, and you can't really plant explosives to pull a building if the building is on fire. Especially the kind of fire that is melting steel, which occurs at 3000 degrees Fahrenheit.
So, do us all a favor, and tell us why WT7 collapsed. Explain why every single video shows the core of the building coming down first. Explain why a high rise in Spain can burn for over 24 hours, partially collapse, and still not fall. Explain why the only three steel and concrete buildings in history to collapse from fire do it on a single day in the same square mile.
Another test of faith? Oh no, the Deliverer is angry with us - quickly! The omnipotent creator of the universe needs your money! And he's saying you should send it through my paypal address...
Everyone I know who says that they can't find a job are doing the same thing: faxing or e-mailing a resume, possibly submitting something online, and then waiting. Let me tell you something as an employer, sending your resume in the mail doesn't tell me you want the job. Following up with phone calls, in-the-flesh visits, and thank-you notes after interviews will get my attention. If you're fishing for "just something" then you're not the type of employee I want to invest in.
Apple releases Leopard and says, "We offer backwards compatibility with Windows applications, and fully support AppleVM." Consumers say, "I could ditch Windows and keep my apps... plus I won't have to pay for virus protection or deal with anti-spyware nearly as much as in Windows." Microsoft says, "Stay with us! We'll have Vista soon! Nine versions!"
There are two killer apps that really hook you into the new Macs... Spotlight and the remote (that doesn't have 300 buttons). Until Microsoft can deliver that kind of experience out of the box, they are in trouble.
Fantastic! I had no idea that New Orleans had the same population density, flood probability, and problem of a massive amount of people who didn't own a car. If you've ever lived on a coast, you know that half the time it never hits where they say it will, and some people even evacuate in the wrong direction, heading towards the storm (especially in Florida). The white elephant is, of course, that most of the deaths weren't people who drowned - they died of natural causes exacerbated by the fact that our Federal Government, with BILLIONS of dollars at their immediate and easily accessible disposal, completely failed them. There are still hundreds of empty beds at FEMA camps all across the region, due to poor management and poor planning. And there's no excuse for "confusion of responsibility:"
"DISASTER. It strikes anytime, anywhere. It takes many forms -- a hurricane, an earthquake, a tornado, a flood, a fire or a hazardous spill, an act of nature or an act of terrorism. It builds over days or weeks, or hits suddenly, without warning. Every year, millions of Americans face disaster, and its terrifying consequences.
On March 1, 2003, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration."
Now the current (and previous) administration has missed the clues and failed to prepare for: Terrorism and 9/11 The Iraq War Katrina
As Senator Kucinich said, I think we see a pattern here. But the problem is not Republican or Democrat - it's that our government is fundamentally broken. I'm voting straight down the line this year - voting out every single incumbant, regardless of how much I hate the alternative.
It's nice to believe that there were "true" christians while the catholic church was around, but that's simply wishful thinking. Until Martin Luther's little rebellion took hold in the 1500s, if you called yourself a Christian, 99% of the time you were Catholic. I don't think anyone needs to elaborate on how far off the mark Catholicism is from anything represented by Christ.
I don't think Paul was an agent of Rome, but I absolutely think that they made a calculated effort to popularize his views, especially regarding whether Christians should follow Jewish law. Romans wanted to de-emphasize the obvious link to Judaism so they could claim the church for themselves.
I think you should learn a little about theology and church history rather than a bunch of crazy conspiracy stories if you want to talk rationally..
If you're truly an atheist, then why look further than obvious political power struggles which formed Christianity? If you want to give them a pass due to some emotional attachment, that's your failure of thought, not mine.

Later, everyone denies that the building was pulled, and the government officially "doesn't know" why a 70 story building collapsed.

Now the current (and previous) administration has missed the clues and failed to prepare for:
Terrorism and 9/11
The Iraq War
Katrina
