  1. Re:Not surprising... on Copy-protected CD Tops U.S. Charts · · Score: 1

These days, every band either plays punk (which I hate) or plays music that's entirely based on texture and effects and completely forget about song writing, decent baseline and non-repetitive melodies.

Very few bands that you could ever hear on a typical radio station these days plays actual punk music. Maybe you're referring to the pop-emo "hey i've got spiked hair/tattoos/plaid pants/a spike belt/chains so i'm a punk" garbage that's on MTV and tons of radio stations all the time?

If you're interested in really good songwriting I would recommend Good Riddance "For God and Country" or Propagandhi "Less Talk, More Rock", they are some of the best punk albums as far as lyrical content goes.

Yes, this all sounds great but personally I would prefer not to have a bunch of kids who have no clue about the real world and no concept of responsibility be selecting who will run this country.

The problem with 14-17 year olds is not in their lack of intelligence, but in their lack of common sense. I think the main issue is that the majority of kids do not support themselves and until they do the really shouldn't have much of a say in how things should go.

I suppose I could possibly support a measure for them voting if they were not claimed as a dependent on anyone's tax return.

It's a good point, sometimes people can actually look better in a pair of jeans than "dress pants" and some jeans even cost more than them.

It reminds me of a time I was going to Club OPM in Caesar's Palace and I saw this huge sign at the door that said "The price of what you are wearing does not affect what is required by the dress code." I'm guessing some people have tried to get in wearing $200 tennis shoes or $250 basketball jerseys or something.

Unforutnately, people *do* judge a book by its cover.

I don't really know if it's "unfortunate", in my experience, people who are unable to have proper hygene and appearance in a work setting generally have a serious lack of social skills, which in the long term can be very damaging in relations with clients and co-workers. I usually think if they can't take care of their own body properly why would I trust them to take care of anything else.

This is not to say you can't dress however you want when you are not at work, if I see someone dressed shabby at the supermarket I really don't pass judgement on that person because why should they dress up to go to the supermarket?

  14. Re:the popularity of videogames on The Politics of the Video Game · · Score: 1

South Park is easily the most political show on TV with maybe the exception of 'The West Wing' and news shows (O'Reilly Factor, Daily Show, etc) which provide direct political commentary whereas South Park's is generally buried within the plotline (Simpsons does this to, to a lesser degree).

Personally I would love to see more political videogames. Maybe one about how the Roman Empire squandered it's vast economic power by sending its legions to the corners of the world fighting war after war (if you've got the world's greatest military you might as well use it!), alienating the rest of the world, and eventually leading to it's decline and the end of world order.

I don't listen to the radio or watch MTV at all and yet I still know when good albums come out for the genres that I listen to. They don't even play punk/industrial/drumnbass on MTV or the radio (maybe at like 3AM on the radio if you're lucky). When I group that I have liked in the past comes out with a new album I'll generally buy it on good faith and if it sucks the next time I'll definitely have to do a little more research to make sure it won't suck again... but I'm rarely disappointed, truly good artists rarely put out horrible albums, thats generally the domain of pop music. Not only that but if you know lot of people who are into those scenes they can tell you what's new and good.

Of course they are harder for you to learn. I had the same problem, we were both taught first on an imperative language and so forever more we are stuck on that mindset.

People I have met who started out on functional and can write a lisp program as quick as I can write C often have serious problems with even the simplest program imperative languages just as I will get stumped by something stupid when trying to use lisp.

As in natural languages it is normally your first language that you are going to be comfortable with the most although you can obviously learn others. In coding its a bit more complex since you may find that your first language was terrible and pick up another one but people will generally stay in the same paradigm of imperative, functional or OO. It is a challenge to cross over once your mind works in a certain way.
