When talking about "merging" iOS and OSX, I would imagine it being similar to Windows proposed usage of their phone OS as a front end that can be used (or not). Similarly on OSX you'll have a iOS front end that can be used...or not.
Well, to a degree I can understand why. I grab just about every free app of the day, but they are almost never something I would pay for (even Swiftkey). I know many people who are like that because while the app may be great, at a normal price of $5+ there's no way in hell I'm buying it - but give it away for free and sure, I'll take it.
And that is what the developers should take away from it: Freeloaders aren't potential customers. They only got 100k downloads b/c it was free. Likely single digit percentage that would even pay for said app, but this is a tangential issue really not related to the Amazon deal they agreed to.
True but if they had some sort of ad based revenue in the product like so many "free" Apple apps have then they would still be getting some revenue off of that. Does Android have anything like that in place for ad revenue? Being Google, I'm sure they do. Sounds like the developers missed out on a big opportunity even if they gave it away.
Although admittedly if it was a paid app initially, I wouldn't want ads in it. Perhaps they should consider something like that when signing up for the Free App A Day promo.
What many fail to realize though is that even though you are spending money on repairs and upkeep, it is still less than you would have paid for a more expensive new car which will also have repair costs. It is a hard decision for sure but the GP is right, it is the best use of your money in the given scenario. And you can get a pretty decent quality car these days for under 10k if you do your research.
There are other countries that produce music and movies, and some of it is as good or better than our mass-produced hollywood media. If everyone watched half as much American media and watched some movies from other countries, that means 50% less money going to the RI/MPAA, and 50% less bribes to our representatives.
Oh please, like some other country or Bollywood could make something like Green Lantern, Battlefield Earth, or even Superman 4. Oh wait....
No screen so you attach it to HDMI port. No input device unless you attach it via USB. No internet unless you attach it via USB, no storage unless you attach it via USB, you also have to connect the power cord (can it even run off battery pack?), etc, etc.
Remind me again why this isn't just something to be used as a garage door opener or sprinkler timer? Sure it's only $25, and would be fun for hobbyists, but by the time you add all the rest of the needs for basic programming and interaction I don't see it fulfilling their grand vision of a "computer" in ever students hand. It's only slightly more useful than the Linux liveCD that runs off a USB flash drive. It also stretches the definition of "computer" if you have to add all those things to make it useful. Seems an old pentium or x386 would be more useful in their current state and cheaper as well (free). I'm not discrediting the whole idea but I think their grandiose vision is a bit off.
"Pay the fair share of taxes".
That's a phrase that is getting thrown around a lot lately. What does that even mean? I'm not against raising some taxes and closing loopholes but I don't understand this "their fair share" bit. It's an emotional term that only promotes class warfare since no one has defined it.
TEN PERCENT????????
Ten percent is a huge number. Real technology geeks are rare.
Don't be confused by the posers who cropped up when geekery became fashionable.
"Geekery" is/was fashionable? Either you've been on tech sites too much and hearing an echo or my head is teh explodes. Sadly the confirmation bias of the mods agree with you.
In other words 35% of consumers don't care about the product but the social symbol it is and the status they think it confers on them.
No, in other words Apple has created a good brand that people have come to trust in respect to their next smartphone. But go on hatin' if it makes you feel better that many people choose an iPhone b/c it's a good phone and just as good if not better than many Android handsets.
Same boat with me. 3GS will be upgraded this fall unless it really is crap, which knowing Apple, would be difficult./cue the Android fanboi's--I like it too but I like my iPhone better.
Actually, what you need is a political culture in your state that values integrity and good ideas over party loyalty. A great example of this is New Hampshire: Their Secretary of State, Bill Gardner, has been in office since 1976, throughout both Democratic and Republican governorships and legislatures, mostly because he's very good at his job and widely seen as valuing clean elections expressing the will of the voters.
Compare that to Ohio, where Secretary of State is often a very politicized position and where Ken Blackwell (the defendant) was doing everything he could to ensure that his party would win. These kinds of things were widely reported in newspapers:
- Rejecting voter registrations from heavily Democratic areas because they were on the wrong paper stock.
- Rejecting voter registrations from liberal political groups because they had, in order to comply with applicable laws, submitted all the registration forms they got, including ones from Mickey Mouse and the like.
- Refusing to do anything at all about churches explicitly endorsing Republican candidates (if a religious body endorses a candidate, they are supposed to lose their tax-exempt status).
- Putting fewer voting machines in precincts likely to vote Democrat than in precincts likely to vote Republican, so that Democratic voters had to wait for hours to vote while Republican voters took about 15-30 minutes.
Honestly, these seem like bogus claims after the fact to justify the result. Just giving some possible explanations to these generic claims. Wrong paper stock? Could be due to mass manufactured forms and fake names. Rejecting voter regs from liberal political groups. I notice you carefully don't say all forms were rejected. Proof of church related sponsorship of a candidate would need to be implicit and you know, have actual proof, not hearsay. About the number of voting machines? Some places always have longer wait times to vote. Couching it as a election manipulation is just sad unless there is again more than hearsay.
In Canada, engineers do apprentice, for an additional 4 years after getting an accredited degree. You have to work under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer for it to count. Then you can get your P.Eng.
Same with P.E.'s in the U.S. You have to have so many years of experience that is signed off on by a P.E. before you can take the test and become one. That is where the GPP is confused. Sure Doctors and Lawyers and such go through apprenticeship, so do professional engineers that work in the public sector and want to be licensed.
I've heard about that. They created a video guide to it is well but it's been a while so I'll have to find it.
OK, here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oavMtUWDBTM
This sounds great and all, but can someone please explain to me what this will mean for those that get the test done and have their genome on a flash drive? I can understand yeah you might have male pattern baldness or increased risk of cancer, etc but there are other ways of determining that currently including yearly blood tests and the like.
What will having your genome sequenced actually do for you, today, right now? Why should I pay $1k or even $50k for something like this?
Users are great, but posts are the lifeblood. I've not seen any posts in my Google Plus circles that weren't either meta or cross-posted to Facebook.
+1. I think most are just using it as a second social media site that needs to be updated along with FB until we get some apps that will feed all of them. I don't see (many) users leaving FB for Google+ en mass and closing their FB accounts. Most just keep both.
The majority of FB users didn't migrate from MySpace, they are new to the social media networks and will likely stay with FB, if they update at all, since everyone else is there and it is where they started when friends encouraged them to join. While I and many love G+, face it, there just isn't that much value added currently that will make a whole lot of common people want to switch to a whole new service.
Maybe it's because it is invite only. I mean if something is exclusive, lot of people want in.
...and my guess is that most of those are tech oriented folks interested b/c it's Google and not Facebook. The growth will not continue as rapidly but at what point will they level off? Hopefully enough that they challenge FB and aren't just a second social media account to keep updated.
If the terms of the subscription are quite clear that you only have access to the music so long as you pay the subscription, why should you own the content?
I don't own every film I get in my Netflix subscription....
I believe the popular reply on Slashdot will be "Sucker!", regardless of its merits.
Pass laws that any creature with human DNA is human and has the same rights as any other human. Have the law make those who create such creatures be financially responsible for them until such time as they can be demonstrated to be able to care for themselves.
This would never pass as we can't even get people to treat those that have 100% human DNA as human (see abortion issue).
Which ISP's aren't participating? Mine is Cox and it covers a lot of the country. I watch ESPN3 for the big games via PlayOn and don't pay for cable/ESPN.
My "cable" company (if you consider AT&T U-verse cable; it's close enough) wanted $120+ a month to watch what I wanted and DVR it. Corrupt video? Schedule get screwed up? Local network happen to be out? I'd be screwed. This was on top of $50-$60/mo just for internet. So now it's $50-60/mo on internet plus $16/mo for Netflix, $8/mo for Hulu Plus, and I can still buy $96 worth of TV off Amazon or iTMS and still break even!
Of course I'm sure the internet providers (who also provide TV) will start getting bitchy when people start dropping their service for cheaper options over their existing network connection. But their service is crappy and their prices are outrageous.
Save your $8/mo for Hulu Plus and connect your laptop to your tv. IF you don't have one and don't want that hassle (like me) of that or a HTPC, head over to www.PlayOn.tv. With it you can stream all net video, including Hulu and ESPN3, to your TV or iPhone (flash video sent to iPhone even over 3G!!) through numerous devices that support DNLA (many BR players do these days as well as game consoles or net connected TV's). It costs money (free trial) but you get much more than Hulu Plus and it has numerous other services it can stream./end commercial
That's what we use and I love the service and it's wife friendly (main selling point).
They'll probably announce that they've spotted the first Starbucks on Mars.
Close! They *think* they found some highly briny water deposits and theorize it tastes something like Starbucks coffee.

That is an interesting spin on the subject.
Try looking up the definition of "per capita", and then looking up the increase in population of the USA for the last 50 years.
Hint: both population growth and increased energy usage have been exponential.
I still don't think you understand what exponential means. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exponential_function

Way to miss the point of relating it to things people can grasp.

Here is what a Trillion looks like.
http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html
You didn't even look at my link did you? It's roughly the same thing except yours has worse graphics and not as much in comparison.
I thought this site explains what a trillion dollars is fairly well.
