    As a longtime Nextel user I have also never been able to move the chip to the new phone, even on the exact same model. Apparantly it has something to do with the way the #'s are recorded in their billing system or some junk. Thankfully they have always transferred all of my data to the new phone for free.

  2. No more Dialog Box errors! on User-centric GUI Design Explained to All · · Score: 1

    This annoyed me to no end. The reason I was browing with tabs was so that I could have many of them open at once, which probably means I didn't want to be interrupted when that tab did not load. My fix was to set

    browser.xul.error_pages.enabled = true
    in about:config

    This makes the pages give simple xul error pages with no dialog box, easily been the biggest improvement that about:config has given me in Firefox.

    The easiest way I know of currently to fix it is to create a bookmark on your toolbar with the following as the address, all on one line:
    javascript:(function(){var s=document.body.style;var x=s.display;s.display='none';s.display=x;})()
    Clicking on this bookmark will correct any screwed up Slashdot page in Firefox. Now if I could just find a firefox extention to remove the subdomains from slashdot.org automatically so I don't have to deal with any of these terrible color schemes (it.slashdot.org for example).

    You do realize that part of what makes this "predicition" popular is the fact that it's the Washington Redskins (the Washington D.C. team) and it's related to their last HOME game before the election. This myth would not be nearly as popular if it were some prediction based on the St. Louis Rams last game at Green Bay or something. This is one that is relatively non-obscure, but still just coincidental of course.

    Wrong. I was personally stop-lossed from March 1st 2003 until August 1st 2003 by the United States Marine Corps and the DoD. This stop-loss applied to EVERY active duty or activated reserve member of the USMC. This kept me on active duty not only past my EAS (End of Active Service) but also past my EOS (End of Obligated Service), which was the final date on my inital contract, which the DoD seems to believe they do not need to honor on their end. It is a de-facto draft.

    It's also highly regressive (i.e. taxes the poor a larger percentage of their income than the rich). A consumption-based (sales) tax would turn a family that is getting by on the poverty line (around $18,000 for a 2 person household this year) from paying $0 taxes a year to whatever arbitrary percentage was chosen. Poorer people send almost 100% of their income on consumption (food, rent, etc), while rich people spend a small porportion of their income on consumption.

    Not in all cases. The best example of this is gasoline, when state/local gasoline taxes go up the stations are not able to increase their prices 100% of the tax increase, because of the locality of the product, people will just buy gas somewhere that doesn't increase 100% of the tax. This is particulary true in Washington D.C. and any population bordering another state (for state taxes). In cases where that is not true it is still influenced in the case of locality taxes, because no city exists on its own.

Five years and three version of Office, no changes. The only reason the file format has changed in Office 2003 is to take advantage of XML. Of course, if they hadn't updated it to use XML you would be bitching about that also, saying how they don't "support new technologies" or innovate in new version. You should really try doing some research about these things before you blindly bash them. Microsoft also makes the schema available for FREE and offers Royalty-Free licensing of their specific implementations!
