  1. Re:Nuclear on Wind and Sun Beat Other Energy Alternatives · · Score: 1

"The horrible truth is that for hard core greens the only solution is eliminating a couple billion excess humans and forcing the remnant to live a 'reduced' lifestyle to satisfy their self loathing." Ding ding ding we have a winner!
While yes, we should absolutely be looking into alternative energy sources for obvious reasons (they're called non-renewable resources for a reason), a lot of these enviromentalists love to propose things that would only be feasible if we killed half of the population off. This isn't some grandiose statement, it's just how it is. Unless humanity gets its growth in check, it'll continue to need a bigger and bigger infrastructure to support it, and the Earth won't be able to keep up with it forever. A real environmentalist would be calling for population controls on humanity, but that would never happen because humanity's ego will forever rebel against that notion.

You can't expect to power the entire US (not to mention the rest of the world) entirely on solar and wind power. They're just too damn inefficient and take up huge amounts of space, not to mention the rare materials required just to make solar panels.
As hokey as this sounds, if you want to see a model of what the result of this idea would be, go play Sim City and try to build a 'green' city that doesn't use any sort of pollution generating power plants. Your population will get capped in a hurry and half the map will be power plants. Yes, I realize that's just a game, but funnily enough that is exactly what would happen in reality. If you really want a laugh, create a normal city with a mix of power plants, and then try "going green." Have fun keeping track of how much of your city you have to bulldoze!

I do think that we should have been on the ball a long while ago with researching alternative fuel sources, and electricity production ideas, but I also realize that you have to temper enviromentalism with a hefty dose of reality something that the hardcore greeners completely lack.
The fact that more people didn't realize that the green movement was cream-filled with bullshit when Al Gore did his big concert is pretty sad really. The amount of waste involved with that to promote a green message practically redefined the word irony.
There isn't an "energy crisis" not yet at least, but we do need to get our act together, cut the rhetoric, and start working on real solutions before the shit actually does hit the fan.
Either that or magically whip out some interstellar cruisers so that we can get the fuck off of Earth That Was in a hurry.

This is something that I speculated about on the Eve-O boards. Four years ago is quite a while, and a CCP employee using something to their benefit in game has happened before. It's been a while since that has happened that we know of (though there have definitely been some fishy situations since the last time, but I'll leave the tinfoil hat off for now). So really it's not completely off the wall to contemplate that whoever saw the exploit report all those years ago just swept it under the rug and put it to use for themselves.

DS Lite and PSPs are neat and all, but don't exactly offer up everything someone would need beyond just games. I can't do online banking from a handheld console system yanno?
Sure you can't stuff a PC in your pocket (unless it's that wonderfully awesome OpenPandora system) but I was thinking more about full blown laptops than netbooks. A fully powered console system is sadly completely useless to anyone with a life outside of their house. I definitely regret buying my 360 now that I've switched companies and no longer have the same accomodations on board the ships that I work on that I used to.
I guess I just have a fairly unique perspective seeing as how I'm gone from home so much. The word 'niche market' definitely sums my position up. While I'd love to see a fully powered PC/Console hybrid so I could still play my console games outside of the house, I know that not too many other people would buy one forever keeping this in the 'keep dreaming' catagory.

  5. PC/Consoles on Will Consoles Merge Back Into PCs? · · Score: 1

The big problem with consoles is portability.
You can't take them on the road without completely rebuilding one into a console laptop (which your average person can't do without completely fucking the board up). For me, a console is totally worthless since I spend most of my time out of the house. However, if you were to have some sort of console laptop, you'd still be stuck with the fact that you'd need multiple systems if you want to play all the games. The only way a system like this would be logistically feasible would be if Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo joined forces to put out one system that could do everything and that has 0 chance of ever happening.

The concept of a pc/console hybrid is nice sounding and all, but sometimes the chocolate needs to stay out of the peanut butter. A hobbled desktop wouldn't really be all that useful and wouldn't have the appeal that a cheap pc does. Likewise, a console with some desktop capabilities would be ripe for abuse unless user access was severely crippled, which defeats the point of doing this in the first place.

It's a neat thought, but the more likely scenario is that consoles continue to be the restricted home use enviroments that they are with the companies slowly adding more functionality that the user can't tamper with.

Unfortunately that same power means that people can troll and attack others without fear.
The positive side of that though, is that only complete retards who seem to always forget about the "block/ignore" button usually get razzed by the evil anons. Let's be entirely honest here, what's the worst the someone can do with being anonymous on the internet? Call me a doodyhead or a racial slur?
Besides, it's not like anyone on the internet is truly anonymous. There's always a 'paper trail' someone can follow if they know where to look.

"Developers need to stop trying to recreate World of Warcraft with only cosmetic differences." Absolutely, and that's why all these new MMOs keep crashing and burning. They're trying to cash in on WoW but when their target audience goes to check it out, they realize quickly that WoW is still better and go back to the same ole same ole.

WAR is a good case in point of this. Now, at first I was one of the WAR fanboys. The game really did seem to provide an alternate choice to WAR with more focus on PVP and epic combat. Instead, what I found was that the game's PVP was actually fairly half-assed, boring, and very repetitive. Everyone just runs scenarios because the open world pvp does not give the same level of xp/renown over time invested. There's also some very bizarre game mechanics at work in WAR that are turning people away in droves. Specifically the fact that when you join a zone you're given a random number that determines your contribution level. That's why people get such bizarre outcomes in public quest rewards and renown gain in PVP. Then of course there's also the terrible class imbalances (DPS classes unable to DPS at higher levels like the Shadow Warrior, or the Witch Elf raping absolutely everything in her way), and other bugs/glitches that just aren't getting worked out.

When people go and see that sort of crap, is it any wonder why they go running back to WOW? I've already canceled my WAR subscription and won't be going back until they fix the quickly stacking up list of problems with that game. Thankfully my old corp in Eve Online has welcomed me back and a lot of cool things have happened for them while I was gone.

If publishers/developers expect to break into the MMO market, they need to provide unique gameplay, a unique world, and not just clone WoW. There's a reason the same batch of MMOs just refuse to die. WoW/Eve/Guild Wars/CoH, they all give a unique experience.

Even if boosted by 100%, I highly doubt that'd be enough for a cellphone, not one capable of doing anything besides just talking at least. It's not terribly expensive since the foods themselves are all easily purchased in bulk and I eat better and healthier than most everyone else I know. Too often people (especially we proud bachelors) equate eating at home to involve tons of annoying cooking, but it's pretty simple to eat well cheaply.

By keeping lots of simple items about like fruits, cheeses, sandwich style meats, etc. that are healthy but also require 0 preparation it becomes a simple matter to eat well. Even when you go digging for a snack, what you grab will be good for you. Thanks to having easy to eat food at home, you won't sit there going "what will I cook for dinner for myself" and just end up going "ah fuck it I'll go buy a burger." No more fast food = more money in your back pocket, and you'll find yourself feeling a whole lot better in a hurry.
Granted, if you have a family this entire idea goes to crap since it's cheaper to do meals for the whole family, so you'll have to figure that one out for yourself.
