  1. I watch 2x the amount of TV with Tivo on Cable Companies Despise PVRs · · Score: 5, Interesting
I was never a big TV viewer in fact, last year I didn't watch TV for close to 6 months, mostly because of netflix. This year I decided to get a decent cable package since I was living alone. When the PVR first came out, I did not see the value as a casual TV viewer who never recorded television programs.

After reading and hearing so much about PVR's, I decided the time was right to try one out. The main problem was that I only had a cell phone so it looked like the replaytv was my only option. After doing some digging, I found that the Tivo series 2 works with a few USB network adapters. I decided to go with Tivo since I preferred the interface, plus it is the stronger of the two companies.

I received my Tivo a week ago today, and I can not stop watching television. The amount of TV I watch has doubled because with the Tivo. I can find interesting programs to watch, where before I would only have a small chance of stumbling on the program accidentally. I FF through probably 1/2 the commercials , but there are plenty of times when I don't.

My potential exposure to advertisers has doubled since purchasing my Tivo. I'm watching programs I normally wouldn't see because of the time-slot. With the scheduling features, I'm catching many live programs that I would not watch if the Tivo guide wasn't available plus I can't FF the commercials. The short sidedness of established industries to recognize the value of disruptive technologies has been well documented, and the cable industry's aversion towards the PVR is a classic example. The companies that are first to embrace the PVR will succeed.

There are a lots of motherboards that support sata now, but I have yet to find a true sata drive out(cuda V soon). Lots of people are waiting for hammer, I was tempted to upgrade to xp 2800 with the asus nforce 2 board, but i decided this year to examine my cpu usage for a week with my XP 2100.

The were only very rare instances where my cpu hit 100% utilization for a long period of time, mainly compiling and seti so those are probably the only activites that would benefit from an upgrade besides games, which with the ps2 network adaptor I playing console games online rather than say unreal tournament, since there has no real revolutionary fps since half-life, just graphic improvements.

If Lindows spent the time to work on creating a quality distro they might have become a viable contender, but instead they chose to try and turnout half-ass software in order to show some sales made off of momentum from their PR machine.

  14. Madden Online on Xbox Live Goes Online · · Score: 2
Is fantastic with the PS2 network adaptor, plus the ps2 network adaptor is only $40 and for most games online play will remain free, Sony has decided rightly to let each game developer decide if they want to charge, right now all the games on the ps2 that have online play are free, but I'm sure they will be charging for games like Everquest when it is done.

The other advantage Sony has is the PS2 network adaptor also has a modem, since not that many people have broadband. Its a shame that MS didn't look at the history of online gaming services, because from what I hear they are depending heavily on Xbox live for the games unit. I guess they never heard of the Imagination network, the Total Entertainment Network, Mplayer, and others that are out of business too. I guess they also didn't realize that Sony is kicking their ass in the console market and making the xBox online play cost more than the ps2, is not going to help their chances of gaining market share.
