"We've all known Linux has got Microsoft all worried, but they've always denied it.
One of the many reasons why M$ has been so successful over the years is because they are paranoid. Any company that seems remotely threatening, M$ will either acquire, destroy, or spread FUD. I bet Linux was on their radar long before the ween memo.
I definitely agree that they could have done a much better job picking people for the switcher commercials. Most of the people seemed to be artsy yuppies, your typical Mac user. They would have been much better off picking more normal run of the mill housewives, businessmen, students, etc. People who buy machines because they work, not because their friends will think they're counterculture.
3. Zealots. Go to any Bestbuy or Circuit city that happens to have a Mac section, and you'll find one or two Mac Zealots there to 'encourage' people toward buying a Mac. If you put Linux PC's in stores, you'll probably get Linux Zealots there too to show people how wonderful Linux can be.
Yeah too bad when potential customers see the zealots, they will call security.
Actually, if you at all domestic 3-series sales from 1976-1999, by sales alone there are 153,658 BMW 3-series on the road. With new sales and junked cars accounted for, there are probably ~100,000 BMW 3 series on the road. There are ~287 million people in the US right now so that means that one out of every three thousand people in the US owns a three series, that's rare enough for me. Plus, good luck with the ladies in an electric econobox.
EBay agreed to buy PayPal, a popular payment service, in a stock-swap transaction valued at $1.5 billion. EBay, which separately reported stronger-than-expected earnings, will phase out its in-house Billpoint unit.
I'm sure billpoint wont be missed until paypal fees are raised due to lack of competition.
About a year ago a relative of mine was diagnosed with terminal cancer so for her birthday I decided to go through the task of converting all the family photos from 3x5 to digital. We still use the prints in the family rooms but the CD-ROM was great for sharing because you can just send one out to everyone for very little expense. When all was said and done, I was able to send out a full CD-ROM of high-res family photos to 20 relatives for under $30 and a days worth of work. Most of whom would never have seen any of the pictures otherwise.
All these convergence ideas sound great at first but after awhile they don't make any sense. The problem with having a PVR and the Xbox put together is that the parents usually put the video games in another room so the kids won't bother them while they are watching TV. I don't know how this will work but if you can't record tv and play video games at the same time, they might as well toss this idea. The second thing is I realize PVR's are great and lots of people on here have them, but I have yet to see one person I know in the flesh buy a PVR. Maybe I just have white trash friends or maybe people think PVR's + a monthly subscription are way too much to watch the crap on TV. So that brings me to my third point, most of the people who have PVR's now will not buy this device because they will always want the latest and greatest technology or they already have an Xbox+PVR in the house.
Personally, I have a Netflix membership that lets me take out 5 DVD's at a time for $30 a month. I would rather watch 15 DVD movies a month for $2/DVD than record a limited selection of movies off HBO coupled with some crappy sitcoms. I think this device is just an attempt by M$ to bring life back in to machine that appears to be dying less than a year after it was released.
A part's a part. Intel should be overselling its predictable sales by 100% if half the computers are jobbed.
Not necessarily Intel, everyone I know who builds computers as a hobby, myself included uses AMD. I'm sure there are quite a few Intel building hobbyists out there but as far as a percentage of sales, I think it is safe to guess that hobbyist sales make up a much more significant percentage of AMD's sales than Intel's.
If they every change lower denoomination bills, it will meet a lot of resistance amongst the vending community unless these notes will work with the current standard dollar bill acceptors. Given the many failures of the reintroduction of new currency in the past, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a major public backlash against the new notes.
Well the AN 266 comes with built in Ethernet, sound, and geoforce MX video.. The dell configured has no monitor; all items are retail with at least a 1yr warranty. Do a little investigating before you post nonsense. I can get speakers, a mouse, and a keyboard from newegg for under $70 that would be equivalent to dell.
I noticed that at google has free gourmet lunches for all its employees couresy of Chef Charlie. My question is how good is the food and has Charlie told you any interesting stories from his days with the Grateful Dead?
From all the installations of Linux I've experirienced, with a little bit of configuration it will run on anything. Does any have an experiences of recent Linux distros not working? (I mean REALLY not working, not testimonials from people who don't RTFM)
When Lindows was first announced, I thought it could be promising, but they took everything that is great about Linux and through it down the drain. Robertson is basically taking the MS approach towards software but doing under the reputation of Linux. One of the many reasons why people are moving to Linux is that their afraid of M$'s push towards a subscription model. Lindows should be capitalizing on this instead of trying to apply it to Linux. Lindows has some good ideas but the website is full of bullshit marketing claims that make Oracle ad's look trustworthy.
Probably the worse course of action Lindows has taken so far is ignoring the development community that has made Robertson's 1/2baked idea possible. I especially love the idea of repackaging OSS programs and charging for them. Great model guys, let me know when you will be auctioning off your equipment and office furniture.
Yeah, and play all those linux games.

I don't know about you, but my self worth does not revolve around what people think of my computer.
Well then you probably don't own a mac.

Can you please donate to my charity.
Wing Commander II and III were way better than Tie Fighter.

Another linux news site that I like is pclinuxonline, they deal more with desktop oriented distros and it stays current.
Too bad Mac OSX server only runs on Mac hardware.

Can anyone pick out the virgin in this crowd.

Do contact lenses interfere with this technology in any way?

well I've built several amd + crap systems, right now my uptime is 122 days.

How this book review relevant to anything normally discussed on Slashdot?
