I owned a few Palms. Never had one with a physical keyboard. When the iPhone came out, to me it just looked like a tiny, spruced up Palm. Never thought it would be the killer device it turned out to be.

The sports field is not fancy, it is literally a field. Not even goal posts. They have a very small budget, total. For everything school related, K-12. We took up a collection and the donation was a substantial percentage of their total yearly budget.

  12. Many thanks to Glendo, WY on Ask Slashdot: How Did You Experience The Solar Eclipse? · · Score: 1

Glendo is a tiny town with a population of 205. About 100,000 extra people showed up for the eclipse. The locals were very friendly, and allowed us to observe from the sports field next to the school. They were so taken back by all this, the locals were out videoing the traffic as it arrived, since they had never seen anything like it. The location was perfect. Absolutely clear blue sky. A couple of hot air balloons drifted by just as totality hit. Absolutely breathtaking event. Then, reality hit. We had to make it south through the largest traffic jam in Wyoming history. Well worth it.

The cruiser HMS Sydney was sunk in that same area during WWII with the loss of all hands. They didn't find it until 2008. If it took them that long to find a massive warship, it's going to take a while to find bits of a crashed plane.

  17. Worry about schools on Amateur Drone Lands On British Air Carrier, Wired Reviews Anti-Drone Technology (bbc.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

2 lbs of explosive would do nothing to a flight deck. A drone dropping a grenade onto a playground while kids are playing is a far more likely outcome. ISS is already doing that in Iraq and Syria. As they were being defeated in Mosul they sent drones into cleared areas and dropped grenades or mortar bombs onto the civilians. It seems someone always finds a way to use every technological advance to harm someone else.

  19. MREs have improved tremendously over time on Military Tech Could Be Amazon's Secret To Cheap, Non-Refrigerated Food (cnbc.com) · · Score: 3, Informative

MREs today are so much better than the original dehydrated pork patty and dehydrated fruit cocktail. Not to mention the original 4 hot dogs or meatballs in barbecue sauce. The biggest problem with the providing tasty food is having to smash it flat in those little packets. They have found ways of including far more enjoyable fare. If they packed it in a more appeasing manor they may be able to turn out decent meals.

  20. Oracle started to confuse matters when they stopped going by the version number and started calling things 8i and 9i R2 and cloud and every other odd name they use.. 9i was 9.0, and 9i R2 was 9.2. Where did 9.1 go? Long ago, we deployed Oracle Reports for a customer. It ran on the 8i application server which was version 8.1, but was called Reports 6i. The reports function ran internally under an Oracle 8.0 home. I would prefer an overarching name, like Oracle Database 2018, and just use the version numbers to identify the actual versions of the components.
