The BBB has been effective for me in the past. Not immediately, but they were effective. It took a few weeks, but the money was returned to me. It also helped against a collection agency that was abusing the FDCA.
I never expect services I don't pay for to be prompt, so perhaps you should give the BBB a little time.
Google is doing what they are destined to do. Think about it for a minute.
With an online Spreadsheet, Word Processor (writely), E-Mail, and Web Page Editor on top of supporting a Web Browser that runs on just about all of the most popular platforms (Firefox Of Course) Most home users will no longer need to have Office installed, or even Windows at that.
I know many people who are happy using Wordpad to do word processing, and just use Excel for simple things like their check book, lists of stuff, and such. Well... Writely and Google Spreadsheet fit the bill, Gmail can effectively be a replacement for Outlook to MOST USERS (not all) Gmail for domains, no more need for Exchange server, Google hosts it... Google Pages... replace Frontpage and IIS at the same time.
Now that this all comes together think about this. Got a computer with Firefox, Mozilla, or a recent release of Netscape? If you don't... you can for FREE. Now think about this. Dell starts shipping Google software preinstalled on their machines...(yeah, you read it here) They already have a portal with Google. How hard would it be to sell their entry-level systems with links to these applications as their Office suite? Piece of cake! They have just replaced MS Works, or that Word Perfect Demo that came with my machine at work... for free, through an alliance they have already made.
How much of a jump is it to offer a Linux box with the same thing... no problem at all..it all works.
That is how Google can make Microsoft Irrelevant, and Microsoft knows this, so they see Google as their biggest threat.
Just another conspiracy, or are the facts too irrefutable to ignore?
I'm pretty sure, I have seen Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, and a number of other popular cartoon characters get shot in the face plenty of times. Does this mean the murderer watches Loony Tunes?
Drink heavily because you're going to get cancer one way or another, at least then you can be proactive and say "I'm a go getter, I went and got it before it got me!"
If you live in a big city, or wake up in the morning there is a chance it might cause cancer... So one study says one thing kills it and another says something else helps it...if you ask me, it looks like they still haven't gotten to the bottom of it.
So there, no more moderate drinking, become a wino!
Being a home brewer, I have learned that it is very hard for any kind of disease-causing bacteria to survuve in beer. Moreover, drinking is a depressant, which often causes you to relax and "let loose" (unless you are trying to "drown your pain"). On top of that, wine is supposed to help with keeping arteries clean, and beer (as pointed out a few months back on/.) drinkers are less likely to get cancer.
So one can only conclude that moderate drinking is good for your health... Drink up!
Yes...it is... run or it will Kill You! (or your computer)
I still use Office 97 because...
While Office 2003 chugs along pretty slowly on my machine at work (WinXP, P4 3.0GHz, 512Mb/RAM)... Office 97 runs like lightning on the aging computers (P233MMX, 32Mb/Ram, Win2000) at the Non-Profit I volunteer for... and to be honest, for typing letters and memos (what word processors are most used for) Word 97 is quite decent. Excel 97 can keep a general Journal, and a number of other accounting worksheets in order like a pro, and Powerpoint can do quite well at presentations.
As for Access... Why? It's like the middle kid between Excel and an Sql Server. Outlook *might* be killer in some places, but it's no where near as convenient as the bigh Marker board calendar and corkboard on the wall...and guess what, our office's shared calendar cost $15!
So, what is the compeling reason to switch to Office 2007?
Use Naugyhide for the wallet rather than duct tape. Sew it together (if you don't know how to sew they lady in the house above your basement does). Use a few plies of industrial aluminum foil so it doesn't crumble after being folded over and over again.
Duct tape is good for some things, but not quite as nice as using good materials to make a decent product.
Second, a simple news site does not need DHTML, or fancy menus that pop out or any of that Annoying Shit.
Third, Choice of language is the sole responsibility of the page author. If I choose PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP, ButtSP (yeah, it doesn't exist) it is my choice. I have been writing CGI scripts for years. My first server was Microsoft PWS running CGIs made in PowerBASIC. (My Library for CGI Programming with PowerBASIC is still on their site) So, if someone wants to make their pages using Shell Scripts, that is their choice.... it is a server-side technology, so it doesn't matter to you anyway.
Moreover, a print version of Slashdot probably wouldn't sell. Slashdot's niche market is daily tech news, dupes, and a community (the comments...you know) You cannot do that with a magazine. (except the dupes)
Sounds also have a number of drawbacks, 1.) A lot of people sneak Slashdot in at work...sounds would force them to play with the volume of their speakers whichg was probably set not to piss the neighboring cubicle dweller off. 2.) They increase page load time. (another HUGE annoyance) 3.) There is no truly cross-browser way to do this. (short of Flash, which I will be addressing in this post as well)
Flash. You had to bring up that abomination to Internet kind. Flash is NOT a standard. Flash is not a standard, it is a plugin. When making a website, it is wise to taget the broadest audience. This means you don't want to require anything other than a web browser to view your site. Most users will ignore Flash as advertisement. Do you remember the Blink tag in Netscape, and the Scroll tag in IE? They were deemed the most annoying features way back when they were around. Flash is just about the same thing.
Finally, Slashdot is NOT Usenet. Usenet is still around. Slashdot is a very tiny subset of anything Usenet is....and Slashdot did not exist in the 80s....look at the bottom of the page... 1997 - 2005...even if I'm wrong, chances are it didn't exist before 1995.
So, how about you go make a site that looks how you described, and use the RDF file to grab your news....then you can live in your own little world like you seem to want to.
I need to stop putting OSnews and Slashdot on my Google homepage...for the last few days it's been, here it is on OSnews, then here it is on Slashdot...
I have my new PHP project....combine the feeds, check for dupes, and create a single feed.
Backups? What are Backups?
I never have mod points when I need them.

My 2 cents..

As a matter of fact, yes. Drink!

BTW: slashdot captcha words are often disturbing.

Syntax error: missing ) on line 1
DAMMIT! Now I have to do all that work I've been putting off!
What are you talking about? Up until recently I ran XP on a Duron 700 with 256MB, and it wasn't quite as slow as people seem to bitch about.
OTOH, I don't run hundreds of unneeded background processes, and am well versed in keeping crapware off my system.
WTF are all you people talking about? I read slashdot in Lynx.
So I'm not allowed to put items in the Swap Sheet anymore saying $300 or Best Offer?
It's pretty common in the classified section of the newspaper, and cars sitting on the side of the street.
Good idea, just a few modifications.

then there is the even older DOS ASSIGN command...and Windows 9x "Long Filenames" ... and APPEND, and all sorts of other symlink wannabes.
Isn't that roughly what Win9x "Long Filenames" did?
Think about it....MS had Symbolic links before they even knew it...how's that for innovative?
There's always the lost welshman! He needs you to fix the Lighthouse and give him a compass.
Wow...I'm replying to an Anonymous Coward...

Odd....wonder why they haven't sued Jasc for PaintShop Pro ...
Firefox still has open first.... just a different multitude of ways to open...
My peeve with Firefox is the context menu scrolling off the top of the screen.
Beowulf cluster of first posts run on IE with this plugin

Anyone up for getting in on it?
If I were Google, I would do with GAIM what they are doing with Firefox....just forge a really close relationship.
