It is because film is 24 fps. It is not quite fast enough to give a completely smooth pan. There is actually a new product called Maxivision 48 that shoots film at 48 fps and supposedly gives a much better image. There is a nice quick overview of the tech here. This is most likely going to die to digital projection even though it is probably better.

Nope, I think MPEG-4 will be the default DVD recording format in the near future.

Why? MPEG4 is "the standard for multimedia for the fixed and mobile web", what does this have to do with DVD? MPEG4 was designed for streaming over a network. MPEG2 is a great fit for DVD and HDTV. There is no reason to abandon it for MPEG4.

  11. Re:Exchange users will pay more... on Evolution 1.0 Released · · Score: 4, Informative

Actually I think they would pay about the same. You have to subtract the client OS license since they will be running Linux instead of Windows. Then once you do that you subtract the Office license since you will be using OpenOffice or StarOffice 6.

Regardless right now I think they are targetting developers who have a Linux box for development and then a windows box for their administrative stuff (email, office, etc.) They are enabling the devleoper to get rid of the Windows box. Should this prove successful (and OpenOffice/Staroffice 6 actually works well) I think they will start to target the general business user.

  14. Re:Earlier stories on Fuel Cells on Methanol Fuel-Cell Battery For Your Laptop? · · Score: 2

Evionyx has a fuel cell that you CAN recharge. It is a Zinc metal-air fuel cell. The cool thing about this company is they are building a general power solution, not just for portables. They look like they are going into production sometime soon (just added a bunch of facility space), they are building electric scooters for Taiwan and AAA rechargeables currently. They are claiming >500 WH/Kg, about 1/3 of this methanol fuel cell, but still much greater than the Li-Ion batteries.

Incidentally they claim to currently hold the Guinness World Record for longest distance traveled in an electric vehicle on a single charge, 214.7 miles. They say they should be able to get more than 600 miles. They used a modified Insight (converted to all electric).

Fuel Cells look like a promising technology, the US should dump a bunch of money into this, get us out of the current junkie/pusher relationship we have with the Middle East.

  15. Re:Something smells fishy... on First Review of Halo · · Score: 2

Everything I have read said that Halo supports only 480p. I think only a couple of games so far are supporting 1080i. I haven't really followed this too much though so I might be wrong.

They probably got the screenshots from the "PC version" (developer box version). I think there was some trick about pulling the upsampled images from the backbuffer when the box is running it through 4x AA (which I think most/all Xbox games will be running with).

As far as I know there is no official monitor adapter available (please correct me if I am wrong) other than getting a componant to HD15 adapter like this which cost a lot of money ($180).

Seems overpriced to me. I would buy it if it was $5, maybe $10, but $20 seems a bit much for its functionality. I will try the demo version and if the nags are like the Quicktime nags on windows then I will not bother buying it (just like I do with QT on Windows). Really the only reason I would use it is for the occasional Quicktime trailer, not worth $20 to me.

When they include Windows Media (which it seems more websites are using unfortunately), it might be worth $20.

The problem with this is that the LARGE majority of users out there do not run applications that would match the SPEC results. People who want SPEC numbers know where to find them, this marketing scheme is not aimed at them.
