Some people (including myself) are kind of anal about turning things off when they're not being used. On the other hand, a lot of people also just turn on their computer and walk away to get something to eat/drink/use the restroom while the machine boots, so it isn't really a big problem.
Yeah I was thinking that too. Wonder how much of the treatment they received though, and if they got anything other than shock therapy other than cuddle/talking time. Shock therapy as a whole seems like bullshit to me though, like those damn Rorschach ink blots that were slashdotted yesterday.
Being from Fresno, CA, I completely agree. Also, Barstow isn't in the central valley. Central valley ends out near Bakersfield, and Barstow is a bit more southeast from there towards Vegas.
Heh, as a computer science major junior who took programming classes for three years in high school as well, I can tell you pretty much everyone and their mother wants to program games. Complete waste to try and get into it unless you're super good, or have a solid backup plan while trying.
I love how there's a Google Crome banner and ad on the page for this article.
On a more serious note, it is a bit ridiculous that they're saying they aren't a HUGE part of the market, but I can see their point of there being others (like Yahoo and MSN) that are also out there. They're exaggerating the Hell out of what they're saying, but there's at least SOME truth behind it.
Given that working minimum wage after taxes even full time in California (8.00 an hour) you're only going to make maybe 1500 a month. That's hardly enough to survive on if you have a family, even with a working spouse. Then you have to consider trying to pay back student loans if you're the typical working American who has to pay for their own schooling. On a side note, I can't help but wonder how long it would take for Americans to start getting antsy about not being able to get enough money to live even relatively comfortably after obtaining an education. We tend to have a violent streak when we're not happy campers. Then again, Pakistan still has its finger on the button, so they may take care of that problem for us.
If you have friends who are going to go hang out, just go with them. Never say no to going anywhere. Try new stuff. Bars are great with friends, talk to whoever you're sitting next to. Just smile, say hi, ask what kind of work they do/school. Little stuff like that. You can do eet!
Solution to this is what a lot of people I know (including myself) have done for a long time: have fake myspaces and such up for family to see and interact with you on, then have your actual one with friends.
On a side note, never had a drug test, and know only a few people in California in their early 20s who have had one. It seems more like an accepted thing now a days here that people doing entry level jobs do that sort of stuff.
I love how this is modded flamebait. It's really only flamebait if you're stuck in the mindset of thinking "omg he mentioned politicians being wrong, he MUST be talking about so-and-so!" If you get the political chip off your shoulder, it's more of an insightful post.
A masters by 22? How're you figuring someone can pull that off? Just getting all your GE and the sequential CS classes at a California State University (guessing you're figuring from California, since you mention the Bay Area) requires four years, let alone the two more for a masters. You're even more likely to face five years going for the bachelors with their current system.
Whatever happened to the idea of WiMAX? Setting up big towers every so often and having wireless going with signals strong enough to reach out for miles. Seems to me that this would be a lot easier to do than direct cables everywhere.

You'd have to have thousands of hours of battery power. That'd be damn heavy. Solar power isn't that strong once you get out a bit closer to Mars.
This is China, and the genius behind it did cause an uproar. (S)He's probably already been shot.

They did the same to me, and I still believe it's bullshit. I'm sure I'm a far bit more sane than a fairly big population on the Internet.
Pretty sure Fresno's on that list, too. All hellholes.

Thankfully you're a /. user, so the goatse.cx picture was probably better.
Good point, they should stop doing things over the net. Time to start building those bombs!
I don't get why you would need a mouse for programming.. programming languages are typed, no?

reminds me of this, heh
Hell, if I was going to be marked redundant, I shoulda gone for my first "OMGZ FIRST POST!" :p
Just reading the summery makes me worried about the slew of "Moon landing never happened!" posts that are on the way

I'm sorry, but the fleshlight doesn't have a suitable advertisement for Hulu.
This makes that show Rocko's Modern Life make a LOT more sense.

...Get off my /., this is news for nerds. Every nerd should understand a basic D&D reference :\
