I agree that the nano targets the market that is not used to carrying their entire music collection around, which is why it is replacing the mini. But I don't believe it creates a market in which the shuffle is obsolete. The $100 pricepoint that the shuffle falls under is still crucial for many people, plus it is still smaller, lighter, and very close to indestructable during normal use. Someone who own's a full size ipod might still purchase an additional shuffle, I doubt they would purchase an additional nano.
Example: I like having my entire music collection with me when I'm walking around campus, driving in my car, etc. The size of a normal ipod isn't an issue for these activities. But for the gym (which I loathe) I need something smaller. I don't need huge capacities or a screen or a click wheel. Just something that plays enough music to get me through the 60-90 minutes of hell that is the gym three times a week. The shuffle fills this void, the nano is overkill.
I found myself in a similar situation this past year, as I need to record volleyball matches for our university team which run 90 minutes at the minimum to three hours at times. The only way to change tapes and not miss any action was using one tape per game, but being on the team and trying to manage that at the same time was not feasable. My solution was to take the DV camera, an external hard drive, and my tibook and capture the footage straight into final cut pro over firewire. The only tough part was finding a power outlet to plug my powerstrip into and have a good angle of the match, but it worked out. After the match I'd take it home, convert the DV files to mpeg2in real time using the Capty FastCoder, and then make a DVD using DVD Studio Pro for my coach to watch the next moring before practice. Cut out the cost of tapes (it's a NCAA Division III public university) and the time required to capture the footage.
A little while ago it was announced that HD-DVDs would not play ful resolution over anything other than HDCP protected outputs, even Component outputs would downrez to 480p. As far as I know, the Xbox360 wasn't going to support HDMI or DVI-HDCP. Either the HD-DVD people were lying, the Xbox360 (when it gets the upgraded drive) will only play HD-DVDs at 480p, or Microsoft is adding HDMI to the Xbox360 spec. Anyone have any insight?
And then Disney can sue each of those company's for infringing upon their ABC networks copyright! See, it's not only the registrars who can get more money!
Does anyone have and explicit guide for something like this that works for editing of DV content in Avid or Final Cut Pro? Right now I do all my work off of individual firewire drives, but I'm tired of the clutter and worrying about one of the drives failing and not having sufficient backup for it. I have a couple of IDE drives lying around, and would love to set up something similar to a RAID 5 setup so I could sleep a little better at night. Some people have mentioned a server setup with GigE, which would also work, but does it actually work like a local disk would with picky Avid software? What kind of boxes are you guys building for it (mobo, processor, ram, OS, etc)?
Ok, so you save on upfront costs with pentium system. But just think, you'll end up spending that money on the numerous games, peripherals, and online services that simply aren't available for the mac anyway!
Apple isn't the one who has to deal with this. The record company who represents the artist is responsible for dealing with royalties. And if an artist doesn't have a label, Apple has stated they can't sell their music.
Since when has it been the perogative of this country to help any people other than its own? And even when it comes to helping its own, the actualality of that is sometimes questionable.
How much did AOL pay for Netscape? It certainly wasn't $750,000,000. Talk about a good return on an investment. Seems to be also that maybe AOL never wanted Netscape for the technology, but merely for the ability to win lawsuits against Microsoft.
Governments are basically corporations nowadays anyway, at least they're being run like them. And if the government can run on something other than Microsoft, other corporations may take notice and give it a shot.
The article and the claim state that Kazaa is on track to become the most downloaded free software ever, not the most downloaded piece of software ever. I think Microsoft bug fixes have that base covered.
As much as you guys hate MS, you post a story on linking to MSNBC at 1am (PST), a time that probably draws the least amount of traffic to and from this site. Come guys, we may have been able to/. MS's servers if you had posted this at, say, noon. How much fun would that have been, eh?
Eastman-Kodak a good comparison?

RIAA vs The Economy

· Score: 4, Insightful
I don't know if Eastman-Kodak's financial situation is a good marker for economic trends. I think a great portion of their market has faced the invasion of digital photography which is certainly cuts their consumer film sales down significantly. Their economic situation may be due partially because of the economy, but also partially to an emerging technology that they is taking away some of their marketshare.

So a box and a game is going to cost $360? Brilliant!

I like your point, but your math is a little off.
10% of 4GB is 400MB
10% of 400GB is 40GB
Too bad apple is dying, and won't be around in a few years to see the fruits of its efforts ;)
Did someone say Powerbook G5 soon?
That's the only way Apple could get away with the thin line between the iBook and Powerbook. I for one can't wait for that beast.

There have been Macintosh evangelists for years, so don't worry, Microsoft isn't innovating.
Cuz I ain't got time for the jibba-jabber.

I believe Safari is also immune to this.

Wow, now they're patching the patch system. Talk about innovation!

It's going to be quite difficult to legally keep some one from giving to charity, no matter how hellbent on world domination they may appear to be.
I wonder if Mr. Ballmer learned how to say Developer in German before he went.
No, I don't want to imagine a beowulf cluster of these babies, especially if the ants managed to get out and infest my room.

It's more like a beginner's guide to drunk driving on the side of a beer can.
