This, and other recent, articles about BSD have made me consider giving BSD a test run on one of my computer. It appears to have some interresting posibilities. And it should be worth getting to know better, it could be the right tool (OS) for some types of "jobs".

The problem is always where to start, I assume there is no BSD flavor as easy to install as Mandrake (just to pick one), but then I am a happy user of Debian (2.2) floppy installer. A few hints to start out on, for instance a install/easy of use comparison of the various BSD's would probably be helpful to more than a few readers.

So what this means is that if gravity has a speed, then each orbiting body will be pulled by the phantom ghost of the other one, which will appear to be slightly behind the center of rotation. Therefore, the two bodies will keep on accelerating

Which suggest that gravity have a final speed. Remember that a change in speed in a direction, is a acceleration. Therefore it follows that a object can be in constant acceleration, without the objects vector speed increases. A constant speed and constant acceleration is a circle. And orbits are circular/elliptic, then it must follow that gravity is in all likelyhood a finite speed.

  13. Re:-5 Moronic Troll? on Cell Phones - Analog vs. Digital · · Score: 1

When your carrier signal goes in analog you get static, but in digital you get nothing.

In the GSM system, when a packet is beyond repair (Class I bits are f***ed), the system (EFR) repeats the last decoded packet, so you will get sound the whole time.

If you have a basic sine wave. In digital you will have part of that way. The sample points. In analog you have the whole wave. If you have a higher sample speed you get more points. Live with it!

That's why the GSM system is not based on sample rate but on the frequencies made by the human throat+mouth, and the sound made is sent as digital information based on that, therefore a sine wave will be transmited perfectly without loss.

Seriously though, the level system is fine for the fast and "pure fun" gamming sessions, and a huge favorit for powermonger players too. It is easy to compare characters with NPCs, and add more players. But in the long run, it can never be as flexible as a "level-less" system, neither in enjoyment of creating your own character, logic of the system, or ease for the GM to spring nasty/fun surprises at the players.

The level system is especially a good starting point for new players, as it is very simpel (take D&D) to introduce the mekanics/flow of what RPG is. Not meaning that level-less are not equally suited. After a while it is "safe" to move onto Aria/Ars Magica/...

But as you point out, the system is outdated, and it is (luckely) becoming rare in the paper and pencil world (as far as I know). And it appears to be happening in computer games too, take Dungeon Siege or Linage (to name a few that I know off).

Take the concept of time and space, it represents any given universe, either based on super string theory (10+ dimensions at times) or a 3D universe as we persive it, or any other theory.

  21. The reference review from heck [OT] on Equilibrium · · Score: 1

    Warning, rant in progress...

What really bothers me about these so called reviews, are their constant need to make references to other products. I don't care if you (the reviewer) thinks this is similar to something else, your perception of the product will in all likelyhood never be the same as everyone elses idea. If you think it should be compared to another book, movie, comic or your auntie's smelly cats, put them in a seperate place in the review, recommendations would be a good place to start. The references should not interfer with the review, it only distract from the (hopeful) real purpose of the review, informing the reader why it was good or bad. If you can not make a review of a products on its own merits then don't, anything less looks like a fanboys wet dream. Don't get me wrong, it is fine to compare, but it should never be the essential part of the writing. Keep the two parts seperate.
