  1. Tomb Raider Game? on Tomb Raider Game Blamed for Movie's Poor Ticket Sales · · Score: 2, Interesting

Haven't the Tomb Raider games sucked for a while now? The first game was really something back in 1996 when it first came out, with its 3rd-person perspective, but there were at least five sequels to the game before the first movie even came out, with little to no changes to the engine. CORE and Eidos sequelled the game into the ground long before the movies even started to suck.

The reason for my wish is that I rarely receive a legitimate HTML email.

Judging from what I see on product pages for the Fujitsu LifeBook S6000 you meant to say combo drive, since that is what they have.

The open firmware password can still be circumvented with physical access to the machine. Change the amount of RAM and then zap PRAM 3 times and you're in. Or just yank the hard drive and go to work on it at your leisure. So 1) you won't be totally screwed, and 2) you can't count on it to protect you. Unfortunately the more egregious benchmark was the Quake benchmark.
Are you talking about this one, where Apple posts 337fps at 1024x768/32bpp for the G5 and 275fps for a P4? I asked about that on another forum, noting that Tom's Hardware gets over 400fps from a P4/3GHz, and one respondent noted that
    1. Tom's was using Q3A 1.16 instead of 1.32 (PunkBuster code is thought to be a little slower)
    2. Tom's used set s_initsound 0 to disable sound while Apple noted default settings, which would imply sound was left on.
    3. Tom's used demo_001 while Apple used demo_4
So I guess it's up to you to decide in the end if the benchmark was fair or no. I don't know enough about the details of Q3A to say whether the differences above are enough to justify a 30% decrease in framerate. It is worth pointing out that Apple's G5 matched Tom's reported framerates for the fastest Athlon XP.

  17. Fuel Economy has Dropped, Not Risen! on More on Oregon and GPS-tracked Gas Taxes · · Score: 4, Insightful
    From the original article:
However, the tax rate hasn't changed since 1991, and the more fuel-efficient cars on the highways are sucking down far less fuel.
This is false. The yearly average of the fuel economy of all vehicles purchased each year has declined since 1988, according to the EPA. While both cars and trucks have gotten faster, heavier, and more powerful since 1986 the average mpg of cars has remained around 24mpg and the average mpg of trucks has remained around 18mpg. Since Americans (and presumably Oregonians) have purchased increasing fractions of light trucks every year and decreasing fractions of cars, the overall average has declined. Any fool can see this from looking at the huge vehicles on the road now compared to the mid-80s. Doesn't anyone remember the song about getting in a wreck in a Japanese car?

Furthermore, removing the gas tax will lower the price of gas, which will encourage more consumption. Which means more trucks and further reductions in average efficiency of vehicles purchased each year. Trucks are heavier, and create more wear per mile driven on the roads when compared to lighter, more fuel-efficient cars.

Why would you create an incentive for people to drive more in heavier vehicles if you are having problems keeping roads repaired? It just makes no sense.

Honestly, I don't know what I'd do with a dual 2GHz G4 at the moment...
Well, let's see. You don't have to have one, of course; as the hypothetical 2GHz G4 dualies ramp up the low end machines can get cheaper, smaller, and faster. And you obliquely mention scientific analysis; I analyze weeks worth of timeseries data on a G4 1GHz/DP machine. Right now the code takes 15 minutes and halving that time would be a significant boost. There are some sensitivity tests to model parameters I that I could make more thorough simply by adding points. I could do more in other overnight simulations. And I'm sure gamers and people who grind Photoshop jobs or render all day will appreciate the speed-up.

Finally, there may be something you or I haven't thought of yet. Apple is doing a good job of finding new things for us to do with our faster processors (iDVD, for example, uses a lot of resources) while other software/OS companies have not done such a good job of finding a "killer app" for having computers faster than they were in 1999. Not that iDVD is the killer app -- I think it's still out there waiting to be found.
