  1. Blueray won't work smoothly in Wondows????? on Why Microsoft Hates Blu-ray · · Score: 2, Insightful

Gates argued that Sony's new high-definition DVD standard, called Blu-ray, needed to be changed so it would work smoothly with personal computers running on Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Is there a reason to assume that Blueray drives or disks will not work smoothly in Windows, but will work fine in Linux, Mac, etc??

The folded up heatsink on this guy, and the heatpipe arwpping from front to back on the Gigabyte card I tried go up above the card far enough to prevent the case lids from fitting, as the lids go only a very small distance above the rear case bracket screw and the heatsink/heatpipe go a good bit higher than that...

  5. Off-Topic Bill tack-ons should be ILLEGAL on Broadcast Flag Back in Congress · · Score: 1

I nominate we all start encouraging our congresmen and congresswomen to put together some legislation that would outlaw tacking on ammendments to bills which are off-topic to the bill at hand. Copy protection of TV shows has nothing to do with government budget reconciliation stuff. It's off-topic, and has no place being attached to such a bill.

If it can't stand on it's own, it should be illegal to hide it in something unrelated just to sneak it past those voting congresspeople that never actually read what they are voting on. OK, sure, that's most of them, but that should be illegal as well. If you haven't read it, they shouldn't vote on it at all or have to abstain that particular item.

But as these tricks are all part of how they do things, it will likely never change. And reading those laws is surely a lot of work, and they won't want to do that before voting...

So, as it will all remain as is and we the people are screwed, I'm going to ask my congressmal to consider attaching something of my own to this spending bill that will make it legal for me to punch each and every congressperson once a year. Make a big shindig of it all and such, at taxpayers expense of course. And I get to show them what I think of their shenanigans with nothing to worry about myself!

  6. How does MS's own format compare? on KOffice Developers Reply to Yates · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is the first I've seen of Yates' letter from Microsoft. He makes some points, and I'm curious to know how their own format compares.

How many different applications from different vendors already support the MS XML format? How does this number compare to the OpenDocument number?

OpenDocument will be usable on a number of CPU and OS platforms. How many CPU and OS platforms will be supported by MS's own XML format? (I use a Solaris workstation at work and do not myself have access to a Windows PC until I get home, at which point I'm not "working" anymore)

How long ago was MS's own XML standard finalized? And how widely is it in current use today? (I honestly don't know either since MS tools don't run onmy workstation at work, and I don't do this sort of thing at home to be worth buying their stuff myself) Has this been long and wide enough to "prove itself" in comparison to how long and wide OpenDocument's use has been to date?

If MS is losing business due to the choice of standard, why does MS not implement this open standard in their own product?

What are the costs involved with implementing MS's own XML format for 3rd party vendors in their tools such as OpenOffice, KOffice, etc?

MS seems to dictate what capabilities are required for "modern documents". Surely the committee that decided on OpenDocument knew what their own needs are and will be, and could determine if OpenDocument's capabilities were suitable?

The CS courses I took covered data structures, search and sort algorithms, operating system concepts, concurrent software/multiprocessor issues, semaphores, and languages and that sort of thing. Seemed pretty ceneric stuff not particularly specific to any OS.

I didn't study programming for Windows at all. We had Unix and VMS systems, but didn't do anything particularly specific to any OS, it was generic Modula-2 or generic C or whatever that could run in any shell/CLI, there were no graphics or API calls in anything except for one single project, but they provided a gneric API for that so we didn't need to do Xwindows calls.

How exactly is it so different to program these mainframes that what I saw as a platform-agnostic syllabus is unsuitable for the task?
